The State of Missouri has NO Towns
Seems impossible, doesn't it. In Missouri, whether a place is designated a city, town, or village is determined by its population at the time of incorporation and a vote by its residents. Note: Missouri doesn't have hamlets either. When I was growing up in Missouri, adults referred to those as a "wide spot in the road". However, Mr. Moser defines some "towns" as hamlets in his "past and present" directory. [link above]
Villages: Population: under 500. Governed by a board of trustees. A community can incorporate as a village.
Missouri assigns cities into specific categories:
- Fourth-class cities: Population: between 500 and 2,999. Governed by a mayor and board of aldermen. A community can incorporate as a fourth-class city.
- Third-class cities: Population: between 3,000 and 29,999. A municipality can be established as a third-class city. There is no requirement that the inhabitants do so.
- Home Rule Charter cities: Population: more than 5,000. Residents can adopt its own charter and operate under any form of municipal government, granting it greater flexibility and power than the other classes.
- Special Charter cities: a few older cities that were incorporated under special acts of the legislature before 1875, i.e., Carrollton and Liberty. This type of incorporation is no longer allowed.

- Sullivan County Place Names, 1928-1945, no longer available online.
- The full story of Newtown, Missouri Tornado: April 27, 1889 on GenDisasters.com. The site, along with several others was hacked a few years ago and everything was deleted. That included a list of all people who perished in the storm. The tornado also hit Kirksville. If anyone has data on this disaster, please share with me, Sullivan County Coordinator, for posting on this website.
