Wheatland: numbering the logs so the past would fit again
Platted in 1869 on the county timeline, Wheatland later gathered something rarer than a new subdivision— thirteen authentic log cabins, taken apart across the county, labeled stick by stick, and raised again as Pioneer Village.
The Hickory County Economic Development Council and a crew of volunteers began the work in 1992. First they had to find the buildings. Then each one had to come down carefully enough that the same timber could go back up in the same order. Anyone who has stacked firewood in a hurry knows why that matters; anyone who has rebuilt a cabin knows it in their sleep.
Pioneer Village also included a replica stagecoach relay station built from a cabin's leftovers— a reminder that Wheatland once sat on roads that moved people and mail, not only memories. Photo sets of the cabins and street scenes live in the local archive alongside this story.
