Mackey: a Preston-country surname in its own right
Mackey belongs with the other Preston-region surnames that keep showing up where land, Society work, and neighbor memory meet—not as a footnote under someone else’s page.
In living county life the name is easy to find. Mackey (“Mack”) Snyder, son of Gil Snyder, assembled nearly a thousand acres north of Preston into the Quad-E Wildlife Ranch and serves as president of the Hickory County Historical Society. That chapter is told more fully on the Snyder page; it does not retire Mackey as a family name.
As with other Preston backbone surnames, the deeper Mackey trail—arrivals, marriages, cemeteries, and kin ties across township lines—grows best from Society vertical files, Index clippings, and family papers. This page holds the stake until those sentences are filled in.
