Bybee: chalk dust, wedding books, and Preston rolls

Some families show up in the land office. Others show up in the schoolhouse photograph— teacher in the back row, kids squinting into the light. The Bybees leave both kinds of footprints.

County timeline keepers note that on April 28, 1859, William Pippin and Margaret Bybee were married by Joel Harlow, J.P.—an early mark that the surname was already woven into Hickory County life before the Civil War remade the map.

Genealogical compilations outside the Society place an older Bybee strand in the county as well: Ann Nancy Bybee (b. 1774, Fluvanna County, Virginia; d. after 1846 in Hickory County), widow of Joseph Dennis Sr. That line is Virginia–Kentucky–Tennessee migration talking— the same current that filled so many Ozark hollows. Treat it as a research lead, not a finished Preston pedigree, until Society papers and cemetery stones say otherwise.

In the school album, Hobart Bybee stands as teacher at Mulberry School on November 10, 1915— northeast county country, not Preston proper, but the same web of roads and kin. In 1931 the timeline records H. H. Bybee as superintendent when Hermitage began busing pupils— a quiet reminder that “backbone” often means making sure the next generation can get to class.

World War I rolls list Harrison Bybee and William H. Bybee of Preston. World War II notes pick up Arthur Bybee's sons (some writing from Kansas, some “nw of town”) and other Bybee connections in the Index-style service columns. The name keeps showing up where duty is recorded.

Today the Society's own officer list includes Steve Bybee as treasurer— proof that the surname's work for the county did not stop at the old school photographs.
