Gabriel Hickman he is buried in or near Osceola, Missouri. 12th Kansas Infantry, Company G.  Enlisted August 10, 1862. Discharged February 28, 1865 at Little Rock, Ark.  Was stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.  Became ill with measles and was in the hospital at Fort Scott, Kansas, probably when the troops were on the move to Arkansas. Gabriel's documents stated that he died about 1898 or 1899 in Osceola,  Missouri.  Cemetary not mentioned.  I have General Affidavit signed by W. W. H. Callahan, who states he has been personally acquainted with Gabriel, as he served in the same regiment in Co. D. and knows when claimant (Gabriel) was discharged. MRS GRETTA J WYMAN

military papers. Mustered into the Service of the United States for Six months war from
date of enlistment in Company F,  47th Regiment of Missouri Volunteers
on the 4th day of Sept. 1864 at Pilot Knob, Missouri. He did fight in the Battle of Pilot Knob and was mustered out at Benton Barracks, Missouri March 29, 1865.

Lieutenant Daniel Black, 2nd Division, Missouri State Guard, severely wounded, Battle of Lexington, Missouri. A native of County Antrim, Ireland, Daniel Black came to the United States in the 1830's-40's with his parents, Randall and Ellen Black.  Daniel Black enlisted in the Missouri State Guard near Edina, Knox County, Missouri. During the Battle of Lexington, Missouri, Daniel Black was severely wounded and lost an arm. A monument in the
Marshall, Missouri, cemetery erected by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, shows Daniel Black's name, among many others, as being in the Saline County Mounted Rifles.
Lieutenant Daniel Black died in the 1890's.  He is buried in the Catholic section of the Marshall Cemetery. Descendants include the Daniel B. Miles Family, which owns and operates The Clinton Daily Democrat, Clinton, Mo.  A descendant of Daniel Black has a photograph of him taken in Miami, Missouri in the 1880's.  The photograph, in remarkably good condition, was taken full length.  Daniel Black is missing an arm in the photograph.Daniel Black Miles

William D. Driscoll was born in Peterborough, Ontario in 1825 and moved to Missouri in 1854.  He was a member of the Missouri Home Guard, Co E of the 2nd Provisional Regiment from 1860 until he was wounded in 1862.  He recovered and enlisted in the 21st Missouri Vol. Inf, Co I, on January 2, 1864, and fought with that regiment until again wounded in the Battle of Ft. Blakeley, Alabama on 4/9/1865.  He was pensioned after the war, lived in Memphis, MO (Scotland Co.) and died 9/18/1902.  He is buried in the Memphis, Scotland Co., MO

James K. Polk Sanders. Born March 31, 1841 in Tennessee. Private in Capt.Burke's Company A, First Battalion, Fremont Rangers Cavalry, Missouri Home Guard Volunteers (also known as Fremont Body Guard). "Polk" died in service on August 27, 1861.
Churchill "Church" Sanders. Born in 1838 in Tennessee. Private in Company E, 79th Regiment, Enrolled Missouri Militia.
Martin Van Buren Sanders. Born March 13, 1845 in Missouri. Private in Company D, 50th Regiment, Missouri Infantry Volunteers. Wounded in battle. Died January 23, 1926.
Allen Brassell Sanders. Born August 7, 1847 in Missouri. Private in Company D (later transferred to Company A), 50th Regiment, Missouri Infantry Volunteers. Wounded in a skirmish in Carondolet (south St.Louis), Missouri. Died July 2, 1909 in Maynard, Arkansas(formerly called Supply, Arkansas), but insisted on being buried in Missouri.  He is buried at the Antioch Cemetery in Oxley, Missouri, and there is a memorial stone for him in the Sanders Family Cemetery.
John Mack Sanders. Born February 8, 1849 in Missouri. Private in the Scott (County) Home Guards.(He was just a teenager). He retells the story of how he was shot at (with a flint-lock rifle - he could tell, because he heard it, although could't see who was firing it) while crossing the farm fields on the family farm. Died November 16, 1932, but is not buried in the Sanders Family Cemetery.
David Spradlin. Born November 23, 1828 in Tennessee. He was first a Private in the State Militia (which had Confederat sympathies), and he later joined Company D, 50th Regiment, Missouri Infantry Volunteers (same unit as his Sanders brothers-in-law). Died January 30, 1904 and is buried in the Spradlin Family Cemetery, Scott County, Missouri. David was married to Miriam Adeline Sanders, older sister to the above-mentioned Sanders brothers. John L. Stephen BIRLEW was a native Tennessean, born in Smith County, January 1, 1842, the son of John and Milbrey (ROBINSON) BIRLEW, the father a native of North Carolina and the mother of Tennessee. Their family consisted of ten children, of who our subject was second in order of birth.  In 1861, when nineteen years
of age, he enlisted in the Missouri State Guards, Confederate Army, but later joined a regiment in the Confederate service.  On account of sickness he did not get back into service until the fall of 1862, when he joined Col. Burbridge's regiment, cavalry, Company H, under Gen. Marmaduke, in which he remained until the surrender in May, 1865, at Jacksonport, Ark.  He was at home during the winter of 1864 and 1865.  During service he participated in the battles of Wilson's Creek, Fort Scott, Lexington and others.  After joining Marmaduke he was at Cape Girardeau, Old Jackson, Chalk Bluff, St. Francis River, Helena, Little Rock, Mansfield, Camden, Pine Bluff, Jenkins' Ferry and Pleasant Hill.  He escaped without being wounded, and was only once taken prisoner and held a short time.  After leaving the service he commenced farming on the old homestead, but was there only a few years when he homesteaded a place in Winona, Shannon Co., Mo.  Winona now stands on a part of this land.    In 1873 Miss Nancy Jane TAYLOR became his wife.  She was born in Dekalb County, Tennessee, and was a worthy member of the Free-Will Baptist Church.  Eleven children were born to their union, six sons and five daughters. (NOTE:  Stephen BIRLEW died February 24, 1923 and is buried in the Baptist Cemetery in Winona, Shannon County, Missouri. There is no grave marker at this time, August 1998). JAMES KILE 3RD LT IN GEN. JAMES MCBRIDES 7TH DIVISION of the MISSOURI STATE GUARD was killed in the Battle of Wilson's Creek, Springfield, Mo on August 10th. 1861  Family legend has always been that he was the last man killed in the battle. Also that his wife Caroline drove a team of oxen to Springfield and
attempted to retrieve his body but was told  that he was buried in an unknown grave.
JAMES KILE WAS BORN OCT 14,1821 IN KY. Parents are unknown but believed to be Alexander and Elizabeth Kile. James P. Mahan  son of the above  was a Private in Co. H. Coleman's Missouri Calvary, CSA  Enlisted at Shannon Co. Mo and surrendered May 11, 1865, and was paroled June 5, 1865 at Jacksonport, Ark James P. Mahan Mar 29, 1842- Feb 14, 1927  married Ida May Loyd and one child Lillie  was born . James P. is also buried in the Mahan graveyard on Mahan's Creek beside his parents James and Sarah Perkins

JAMES NESBIT  Private of Co. I, 1st and 4th Consolidated Inf., C. S. A. Union records of the prisoners of war  show that he was captured at Vicksburg Miss  July 4, 1863,  and paroled July 6, 1863,  An updated historic roll shows that he was wounded slightly at Grand Gulf. Engaged at Elk, Horn, Farmington, Iuka, Corinth, where wounded, port Gibson, Vicksburg  James Nesbit 1843-1916 was the son of Samuel Nesbit Sr and a Miss Harverton,  married Elizabeth Hawkins, and according to death certificate is buried at Bethany Chapel Cemetery on Little Shawnee. Our Great Great Grandfather -  Genevieve Conway Kile and Doug Conway.
William Mahan  Pvt. Co. H, Coleman's MO Vol. Cav.  the son of Samuel Mahan Sr and Mourning Maulding  entered the service at Eminence Mo  in July  1863 under Captain Press Edgar..  The Colonel to this Company was William Coleman. He stayed in the service under these men until the surrender of his company at Jackson Port, Ark. in 1865 William Mahan married Mary Isabel Chilton in Phelps County, Mo in 1870 and had the following children William Lee, Thomas Josh Sarah (G. W. Foster then Hugh Turner)  Adaline, John W.  (Hannah Hildebrand & Mary Elizabeth Mahan his 1/2 cousin) Rebecca (Ephraim Baker) and Mary E. (Theodore Cook)
William Mahan lived near Gang Mo and died Nov 1927 and is buried in a small plot beside Current River near Mathias Branch below the Junction Ferry. Descendents in this area are Art Cook, Ellington, Donna Foster Lesterville, Mo and Anna Cooley Atchison Eminence. submitted by Genevieve Kile

I 5th Missouri Infantry.  Wounded at Baker's Creek and left near Edward's Depot, Mississippi 16 May 1863.  Returned to duty by July 1864 and was in charge of baggage.  Received Certificate of Disability 22 Mar 1865.  Was the only one of five brothers who survived the war.

Clements, who was killed in action.  The 1st NE Missouri Cavalry was later

Infantry Regiment under Col. Cyrus Franklin. Capt. Patton was born 22 Jun 1832 in County Tyrone, Ireland, and arrived in the USA with his family in 1841, proceeding directly to Shelby County. Capt. Patton married Sarah Amanda Peoples on 28 Oct 1858 in Hagers Grove, MO and had 11 children by her.  Following the death of his first wife,
Capt. Patton married Mary Atchison Stutt on 22 Jan 1884 and had two more
daughters.  Capt. Patton died on 3 Aug 1888 and was buried in the Patton
Cemetery in or near Hagers Grove, Shelby County, MO. He was a succesful merchant, farmer and member of the community, having serve as justice of the peace, postmaster and notary public.  He was a Royal Arch Mason and, finally, my great grandfather.

Felix Grundy Griggs. Born in Hardin County, TN., Moved with his family to Stoddard County circa 1850. In 1855 he married Elizabeth Smith, (daughter of Andrew Smith and Julia Perkins), and with her had seven children. He joined Capt. Charles Johnson's Company 'B', of Mitchell's Battalion - Missouri Volunteers, Confederate Army, at Eleven Points Mill on August 7, 1862.The Company served at the battle of Pleasant Hill, LA., where Felix was wounded.  The company later was  surrendered to Union forces in new Orleans where they were  taken, briefly, as prisoners of war. Felix returned to Stoddard County after his release from the Confederate army but because feelings in the area ran so high and for so long, among neighbors in this "no man's land", the family, at the urging of another family member in California,Gabriel Lytle (Little ?) decided to move there. In June of 1876 they left Allenville for Visalia,CA. and eventually settled in the nearby community of Exeter, where Felix and Elizabeth Griggs are buried. Sumitted by J.W. Cohen, Col. Alfred Jackson Davis-  Alfred was born 23 Jan 1838 in Weakley County, TN.  His father John T. Davis, who was a farmer and Southern Methodist circuit rider, migrated from Weakley County to Stoddard County, MO, about 1843 with most of John's brothers.  Alfred married Sarah Charlotte HORTON in 1858.  He enlisted in Company K, 5th Missouri State Militia Volunteers Cavalry on 28 Jan 1862, and was mustered out 4 Feb 1865 with the rank of quartermaster sergant.  He served as a Stoddard County judge 1870-1875.  He died of tuberculosis on 26 May 1883 and is buried at Harper Cemetery west of Bloomfield.  His grave is marked with a Veteran's Administration marker.  After his death Sarah moved her family to Cooke County, TX, where she later received a widow's pension for Alfred's service. Pleasant P.W. Majors:  Pleas was born 1 Nov 1824 in Weakley Co., TN.  By 1850 he had moved to Stoddard County.  He joined Capt. Walker's Company, Mo. Militia, 22 Jan 1862.  His unit eventually became the 12th  Reg. Mo. State Militia Cav.  He became a farrier in July 1862, and was discharged on 1 Sep. 1862 due to "chronic bronchitis," according to his service record.  He was married first to Cynthia Caroline LADD, second to Mary Ann McMillon, third Louisa Riddle, and fourth Henrietta Maria McMillon.  He received a pension for his Civil War service.  Pleas died 27 May 1907 and is buried in Sadler's Chapel Cemetery north of Dexter.  ChuckD
John Henry Foster was a private in Co. B, 2nd Missouri Cavalry. He served from 1861-1865, was wounded and captured. He moved to Alexander Co., Illinois after his release at the end of the war and married. He was a farmer, store owner and Justice of the Peace. He died in 1891 and is buried in Baumgard Cemetery, Alexander Co., Illinois. My great grandfather,   Charles Foster
Francis Marion Foster. he also was a private in Co. B, 2nd Missouri Cavalry. He died at Vicksburg, Mississippi and was buried in an unmarked grave. He was declared "A hero of the Confederacy" and has a memorial stone on the grounds of the Stoddard Co, Missouri courthouse. I can provide documentation for both people if necessary. I hope that you will add their names to your list. My family has not forgotten them or their sacrifices, but I would like to share it with others. 1LT Squire Owens, Company E, 2nd Regiment, 1st Division, Missouri State Guard, my Great-Great-Great Grandfather, was born in NC in 1806.  Joined and commissioned July 10, 1861.  Captured in Stoddard County May 12, 1862.  Sent to Gratiot Street Prison, St. Louis and then to Alton Military Prison.  Died August 1, 1862.  Buried in Confederate Cemetery at Alton, IL. John A. JAMES, born 1845, Marshal County, Indiana. Joined the 12th Indiana Vol. Cavalry, Company A, Nov 18,1863. Discharged Nov. 10,1865. Died April 22,1902, Asherville, Stoddard County Missouri. He married Nancy Ann HILLMAN, June 17, 1882, in Stoddard County, Missouri. His father, Joel JAMES, joined the 48th Indiana Vol. Infantry, Jan. 20,1862, in North Liberty Indiana. He was 62 years old when he joined.

Pvt. Thomas Jefferson Stafford, Co. H. Murdock's 50 Reg. Inf. Vols.  Enlisted December 14, 1864.  Mustered out Aug. 5, 1865, Cape Girardeau, Mo.  Union Army.  T. J. Stafford was born September 22, 1848 in Carroll County, Tennessee to Larkin Stafford and Elizabeth Quinn.  He married Sarah Elizabeth Sullinger September 22, 1867.  He died July 02, 1891 and was buried in the Walker Cemetery, Bloomfield, Missouri. He was a Baptist Preacher and preached at the old Walker Church. Dora Robinson
William M. McKlein Bennett Stafford was born July 05, 1842 in Carroll County, Tennessee.  He was the son of Larkin Stafford and Elizabeth Quinn of Stoddard County.  He went back to Carroll County to enlist in the Confederate Army and died of measles in January 1864 in Fort Delaware Prison, Delaware. He was buried at Finns Point, New Jersey. Dora Robinson
Jefferson K. Stafford, son of James and Susan Stafford of Stoddard County, was born April 15, 1821, in Cumberland County, Kentucky.  He enlisted in the Confederate Army in Bloomfield in the Missouri State Guard March 12th, 1861, and was discharged December 09, 1861.  He reared a family, and he died in Bloomfield about 1883. Thomas Jefferson Stafford, born March 8, 1846 in Stoddard County, to Jefferson Knight Stafford, enlisted in the Union Army in Montgomery's 6 Mos. E. M. M. Co. on July 4, 1864, and discharged Feb. 15, 1865.  He married December 19, 1867 to Susan Meniber Hisaw.  They reared a large family in Bloomfield.  His death is unknown.
Henry H. Stafford, born 1840, son of Henry and Polly Stafford, was born in Stoddard County, Missouri, enlisted in the Confederate Army, Missouri State Guard, 2nd Mo. Infantry, 1st Division.  He married Telitha Arminda Tankersley on March 12, 1874.  His death is unknown. Dora Robinson
Nathan Stafford, son of Henry and Polly Stafford, was born in 1842 in Stoddard County, Missouri.  He enlisted in the Confederate Army, Missouri State Guard, 2nd Mo. Infantry, 1st Div.  He married Sarah ? At least six children was born to them before 1880.  His death is unknown. Dora Robinson
Cullen C. Stafford son of Joab Stafford of Carroll County, Tenn. enlisted in Co. B. Russell's Regiment 20 Tenn. Cavalry. for three years.  He migrated to Bloomfield after the war and where he married Millie A. Springfield Feb. 13, 1870.  Cullen died in Bloomfield in 1885.  His son, Joseph Benjamin Stafford,died in Bloomfield in 1958. Dora Robinson

Morrill, Levi(Uncle Ike  of Shepherd of the Hills) born Aug 21, 1837, died Aud 22, 1927. Served Co. I 7th Kansas Cav.
Powell, Truman(Trueman0.  b. Oct 25, 1842  d. Mar 14, 1919. Served Co. A 34th Illinois Infantry.
Vining, John.  Co. A 124 Illinois Infantry.
There are 2 more that are possibly vets.
Vining, Brastus C.  b. Jun 12, 1847  d. Mar 12 1906.  This marker has G.A.R. on it but doesn't list any service.
Fronaberger, J. L.   b. Jul 17, 1834  d. July 23, 1907.  There is no indication of service, but none of his children seem to have been born before 1870.  It's probably a good guess that he was Confederate if he served at all.

WILLIAM THOGMARTIN: My ggg grandfather.  His daughter married son of Robert Ellingsworth.  William was enrolled in Co. F 14 Reg  MO State Militia as a Private. He was probably in Kansas when the war broke out, as my gg grandmother was born in KS 1860.  William is on the 1860 Stone County MO census, and the1870 Stone County death index, and was buried in the  Jones/Chastain Cemetery near Highlandville Mo, Christian County.
