Private, Denis MAURATH. "He is buried in an "unknown" grave at the National Cemetery in Springfield, Mo., and so this memorial is placed here for him at the St.Louis City site, as he and his family lived in the Frenchtown (now called Soulard Market) section of St.Louis City. His family had immigrated from Unzhurst, Baden (Black Forest), Germany  He first enlistment was in Company A, 2nd Regiment, US Reserve Corps, Missouri Infantry Volunteers (also known as the St. Louis German Home Guards) from May 7, 1861 to August 16, 1861. Was involved in the "battle" of Camp Jackson in St.Louis, guarding of the various railroads and bridges, and was part of a detachment sent with General Fremont's forces to Bird's Point in southeast Missouri to stop General Price's invasion into Missouri from Arkansas. Second enlistment on August 16, 1861, was as a private in Lt. Westerborg's Cavalry Company B, Fremont's Body Guard. This was an elite unit of fighting men, with a lot of military pomp and show, but also involved in unnecessary details, such as escorting of the General's wife, etc.  Was sent to Springfield to roust out bands of Confederates who had infiltrated into the State. Denis was killed in action during Major "Zagonyi's Charge" in Springfield, Mo. on October 25, 1861. Per family legend, he was shot right between the eyes. He was only 21.  John L. Maurath

Maj. Atreus Joshua McCreery (1818-1907). Prior to the war, he resided near his dry goods business on Pine Street in St. Louis. One of the buildings he owned was known as the "McCreery Building" which was  confiscated by federals to be used as a hospital for Union soldiers and Confederate POWs. He served on Gen. Sterling Price's staff  as a quartermaster, until captured in Arkansas and sent to Johnson's Island POW Camp. He was later paroled and served on the staff of Confederate Gen. Churchill in the Texas theater of the war. I have a copy of a letter he wrote Gen. Sterling Price while he was serving under Gen. Churchill, expressing his hope that he could once again serve under Price, who apparently was a good friend of his (in letter talks about seeing one of Gen. Price's sons who was recovering from a "dog bite"). Atreus McCreery married Isabelle P. Churchill and is buried in Bellfontaine cemetery, St. Louis, Missouri. They had no children. Maj. McCreery was the son of Dr. Charles McCreery (1785-1826) and Ann Wayman Crow (1792-1869) who resided in Hartford, Kentucky. Charles was the son of Capt. Robert McCreery (Rev. War Vet.) and Mary McClanahan of Clark Co., Kentucky. I'm interested in knowing if any descendants of Maj. McCreery's brothers/sisters have anymore information on his war service or photo of him.  (first cousin),   Scott K. Williams   Florissant, Missouri
