Advance School 1933 View Photo
3rd and 4th grade class of Advance in 1933. This 1933 photo is from a "souvenir" booklet of several pages with the teachers picture on the front with a large postage stamp sized picture of the class that I blew up for you. Inside is a 4 page poem, a list of the children and a handwritten note from Miss Verona Caldwell (the teacher). I can send all of the pages if you would like. It is pretty neat. My mothers maiden name was June Sample. Ed ClineSubmitter Ed Cline

{The Marco School was located on the West side of the
Parma-Hunterville Road, now Hwy 153. It was about 2 miles
North of Hill's store, or 1/2 mile North of State Hwy D.
There is nothing left to mark it's location. According to
_A History of Rural Schools in Stoddard County_ by Glynda
Bates and Shelby Spears, Marco School was located in Twp.
24, Rge 12, District 90. It's first name was Nettle Ridge.
It consolidated with the Gray Ridge school in 1949.} -

The sign in front of the students reads: Poplin School. Jan
9th 1903. I(?). E. Calvin Teacher.
The city of Poplin was in Stoddard Co. but faded away after
the post office was relocated to Butler Co. and renamed
Fiske. There is also a Poplin Cemetery near Bernie and on
the back of the photo is written "Bernie, MO". Please
contact us if you recognize any of the students or have
other information about the school.

Tatum School taken December 20,
1909. View Photo
I've been told that Tatum school was located a few miles
southeast of Dexter, in Stoddard.
Perhaps others can identify some of the
students.
The people identified in the Tatum, Esco school
photograph, are the Alcorn family,
children of Andrew Johnson and Bertha (Price)
Alcorn.
They are Bessie, Reynold Esco, Beulah, and Flossie
Alcorn.
The sign the boy is holding says

or any of the students.
White Oak School taken 14 Aug
1914. View Photo
This photo belonged to my grandmother, Myrtle Smith,
and was taken in August 14, 1914.
I know they lived in Liberty Twnsp. Stoddard County at that
time.
Her older sister, Pansy and older brother Herbert
were also in the picture according to the writing she did on
the back.
She also mentions a teacher, who she said was her second
teacher (my grandmother Myrtle was born in 1908) and
names her as Lucy Vaught or Vaughn, but appears to
be Vaught.
She also mentions someone named "Virgie Stringer?" of
whom I know nothing about that person. The writing is very
light on the back so I am not positive on that name.
The name on the schoolhouse in the picture is partially
missing but appears it may say "White Oak School".
This photo is thanks to Lavonne Covington.
More information on the School from: Cole Mason.
I have an original copy of one of the Christmas cards that
the teacher gave to the kids that year. The Christmas card
is rather elaborate. On the front it has a picture of the
teacher, Lucy Vaught. In the upper left corner it
says “Souvenir. It is decorated with holly and berries. In
the middle is the picture and under that it says Greetings
and Best Wishes from Your teacher. Under that is a picture
of a sleigh and reindeer.
On the next page it says North White Oak School, District No
99, Stoddard Co., MO. Under that it says presented by Lucy
Vaught, teacher. 1914-1915.
Under that it says School Officers: Isem Harbough,
president, A. B. Riddle, clerk, Henry Smith.
On the next page the students names are listed:
| Carra Riddle Altha Reed Lora Freeman Sylvia Blagg Joe Blagg Melvin Brown Beulah Blagg Gracie Johnson Gracie Hollick Glenn Riddle Lorene Johnson Icy Farris Otis Knotts Effie Lancaster Joe Riddle Golda Farris Earl Bryant Walter Petty Larnie Hollick Francis Proffer Clauda Petty |

11 people on there are family members and there is others I
know. I live close to where North White Oak School was.
There was also a South White Oak School which is not far
from my house and is a home.
