SOUNDEX All families are in soundex files; if you do not know the soundex number for your family, please ask genpat@netins.net. Soundex uses the first letter of the name and three numbers which represent the sounds of the name. To determine the soundex number for your name: 1. write the name on a piece of paper 2. retain the first letter of the name 3. cross out letters a, e, h, i, o, u, w, y 4. use the following numbers corresponding to the letters you have left: 1 = b, f, p, v 2 = c, g, j, k, q, s, x, z 3 = d, t 4 = l 5 = m, n 6 = r 5. cross out consecutive letters having the same number (Jackson is J250 not J222) (Summer is S560 not S556) (Gillson is G425 not G442) 6. (a) names with no letters corresponding with the numbers have 3 zeros added; i.e. May = M000, Lee = L000 (b) names with only 1 letter have 2 zeros; i.e. Barr=B600, Ross = R200, Ware = W600, Wise = W200 (c) names with only 2 letters have 1 zero; i.e. Craig = C620. Cooper = C160, Jones = J520
