Howard County, Missouri

Howard County was officially organized on January 13, 1816, carved from portions of St. Charles and St. Louis Counties. It was named in honor of Benjamin Howard, a Kentucky Congressman, Missouri Territory governor, and brigadier general in the War of 1812.

Located in central Missouri along the Missouri River, Howard County became a gateway for westward migration and settlement. Early pioneers arrived via river routes and trails, establishing communities like Fayette (the county seat), Glasgow, New Franklin, and Armstrong. The region was known as part of "Little Dixie" due to its Southern cultural influences and agricultural economy.
