A Brief History of Buchanan County

Established in 1838 and named after U.S. Senator James Buchanan, Buchanan County lies along the Missouri River and played a vital role in westward expansion. Its county seat, St. Joseph, became a gateway to the Oregon Trail and the starting point of the Pony Express. The region’s rich agricultural roots and river commerce helped shape Missouri’s development through the 19th century.
