A Brief History of Buchanan County
Established in 1838 and named after U.S. Senator James
Buchanan, Buchanan County lies along the Missouri River and
played a vital role in westward expansion. Its county seat,
St. Joseph, became a gateway to the Oregon Trail and the
starting point of the Pony Express. The region’s rich
agricultural roots and river commerce helped shape
Missouri’s development through the 19th century.
Buchanan County is available for adoption.
