JOHN M. VEACH
St. Clair Democrat
18 February 1915
John M. Veach was born in Coles Co., Illinois, August 14, 1837, died
in his old home in Butler Township, February 14, 1915, making the
days of his earthly life 77 years, 6 months, and 21 days. His death
was caused from stomach and heart trouble. Though in poor health for
several months, he seldom grew despondant.
He was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Jane Putz, December 25, 1870.
To this union were born six sons and three daughters, two sons and
one daughter having died in infancy.
He came to Missouri in 1878 where he has been a resident of Butler
Township for 33 years. He was a great believer of schools and education,
always devoted his time and energy for more schools and betterment
of schools, was a believer in civic righteousness and the up building
of the government. He always voted for clean men in politics regardless
of their party affiliations. But he advocated policies on the strength
of their merit and not because they were gotten up by any certain
party.
He was never known to be narrow or prejudiced in his views, and believed
in progress and liberty. He was a great lover of Missouri and especially
St. Clair County.
He united with the Baptist church at High Hill and was baptized August
8, 1902 by Rev. A.H. Dent. We had often heard him say that he was
not afraid to die. He leaves to mourn his departure his wife and six
children also four grandchildren who have learned to love and will
miss their grandpa.
Funeral services were conducted by Bro. T.J. Simmons and Bro. W.K.
Henderson. After which the body was laid to rest in the Pleasant Mound
Cemetery.
