MARY MONIMA GINSBURG

Mrs. Mary Ginsburg – Mary Ginsburg, former co-editor and co-owner of the St. Clair County Democrat, passed away Nov. 4, 1983, in Rochester, N.Y. She was born Mary Monima Green in Woodruff, La., September 2, 1901, the daughter of Charles and Polly Gilliam Green. Her mother having died in childbirth, Mary was reared by her Gilliam grandparents and aunts in Missouri.
A graduate of Central High School in Kansas City, Mary attended the Lexington Finishing School, receiving an Associate of Arts degree in 1921, and the University of Missouri, where she was a journalism major. She taught high school English for two years. On September 29, 1923, she married Robert W. Ginsburg.
Mary was baptized in the Methodist Church in Brunswick, Mo. After her marriage she joined the Southern Baptist Church in which she reared her children. Later she was a member of the United Methodist Church in Texas and New Jersey. She was very active in every church where she was a member, holding positions on committees, teaching Sunday School and singing in the choir. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Osceola and in Friona, Texas. In Osceola she was also a charter member of the Tuesday Club and a member of the Missouri Women’s Press Club. Later in life, she remained active in cultural endeavors.
Mrs. Ginsburg was a woman of strong character who knew her priorities and lived by them. She was devoted to her family, her country and her God.
She was preceded in death by Mr. Ginsburg in 1958 and by a son, Robert Newman Ginsburg in 1975. Surviving are another son, Howard D. Ginsburg of San Diego, Ca.; two daughters, Mrs. Lucy (line is unreadable) N.Y. and Mrs. Mary Emily Short. Tacoma, Wa.; twelve grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
A service of interment of ashes was held at God’s Acre in Osceola on November 10 and a memorial service in the United Methodist Church in Summit, N.J. on November 13.
The family would be grateful for memorial gifts to the St. Clair County Library, Mrs. Ginsburg having been a supporter of their subscription library in the Courthouse which preceded it and, through the pages of the Democrat, of the establishment of the present institution.
