Mrs. Mary Ginsburg – Mary Ginsburg, former co-editor and co-owner of
the St. Clair County Democrat, passed away Nov. 4, 1983, in Rochester,
N.Y. She was born Mary Monima Green in Woodruff, La., September 2,
1901, the daughter of Charles and Polly Gilliam Green. Her mother
having died in childbirth, Mary was reared by her Gilliam grandparents
and aunts in Missouri.
A graduate of Central High School in Kansas City, Mary attended the
Lexington Finishing School, receiving an Associate of Arts degree in
1921, and the University of Missouri, where she was a journalism
major. She taught high school English for two years. On September 29,
1923, she married Robert W. Ginsburg.
Mary was baptized in the Methodist Church in Brunswick, Mo. After her
marriage she joined the Southern Baptist Church in which she reared
her children. Later she was a member of the United Methodist Church in
Texas and New Jersey. She was very active in every church where she
was a member, holding positions on committees, teaching Sunday School
and singing in the choir. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern
Star in Osceola and in Friona, Texas. In Osceola she was also a
charter member of the Tuesday Club and a member of the Missouri
Women’s Press Club. Later in life, she remained active in cultural
endeavors.
Mrs. Ginsburg was a woman of strong character who knew her priorities
and lived by them. She was devoted to her family, her country and her
God.
She was preceded in death by Mr. Ginsburg in 1958 and by a son, Robert
Newman Ginsburg in 1975. Surviving are another son, Howard D. Ginsburg
of San Diego, Ca.; two daughters, Mrs. Lucy (line is unreadable) N.Y.
and Mrs. Mary Emily Short. Tacoma, Wa.; twelve grandchildren and seven
great grandchildren.
A service of interment of ashes was held at God’s Acre in Osceola on
November 10 and a memorial service in the United Methodist Church in
Summit, N.J. on November 13.
The family would be grateful for memorial gifts to the St. Clair
County Library, Mrs. Ginsburg having been a supporter of their
subscription library in the Courthouse which preceded it and, through
the pages of the Democrat, of the establishment of the present
institution.
