His Sufferings Ended
A Horrible Death from Hydrophobia at Brownington
Clinton Daily Democrat
Martin Friend, of Brownington, whose illness from supposed hydrophobia, was chronicled in Saturday's Evening Democrat, died on Saturday evening after horrible sufferings.
At 9 o'clock Saturday morning he grew much worse, and an hour later hard convulsions set in and the poisonous saliva began flowing in large quantities after each convulsion. In the afternoon it was found necessary to strap him to the floor, and strong men were kept at hand in case their assistance might be necessary. As night approached he grew much weaker and at 8:15 he died.
Friend was a laboring man who has lived in Henry County twenty years. When he first came here he lived several years at Lewis, but went to Brownington over fifteen years ago. He leaves a wife, but no children.
The town board of Brownington have ordered an indiscriminate slaughter of canines. It is said that the rabid animal which bit Friend also bit a hog which died some time since.
