Gary Lee Evans was born Aug. 21, 1947, in Humansville, to Lloyd and Dena Evans. He joined our Lord and Savior on Nov. 20, 2006, at his home in Monegaw Springs, with his beloved companion of six years, Thelma Quick, at his side.
Gary was raised in Osceola from a young age and attended Osceola High School until he entered the Army in 1966. He was deployed to Vietnam and served one tour of duty in 1967-1968. After his release from the military, he was united in marriage to Jessie Harding in February 1969 and was blessed with two sons, David and Richard. They made their home in Kansas City, where he worked at the Kansas City Southern Railroad. He then obtained a position at the Santa Fe Railroad and moved to Princeton, Kansas. He remained there until his divorce in 1991. He then moved to Kansas City until he became disabled from the railroad in 1996. He worked for the railroad from 1975 until 1996. He then moved back to Osceola. He met his beloved companion, Thelma Quick, and remained in the Osceola area until his death.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Dena Evans; one sister, Janice Summers; one brother-in-law, Fred Greathouse and one granddaugher, Amber Miller.
He is survived by his two sons, David Evans and his wife Tracy, of El Centro, Calif. and Richard Evans and his companion, Rhonda Pearl, of Ottawa, Kansas; six grandchildren, Jake, Wyatt, Frank and Jesse Evans, El Centro, Calif., Kelcie and Sydney Evans, Ottawa, Kan.; seven sisters and four brothers, Sylvia Greathouse and her husband Bill, Osceola, Christine Greathouse and her husband Harry, Rockville, Vera Greathouse, Independence, Phyllis Cutler and her husband Loren, Collins, Sharon Smith and her husband Bill, Kansas City, Pam Dutcher and her husband Harold, Monegaw Springs, and Sandy Bayless and her husband Jerry, Osceola, Larrie Evans and his wife Arless, Dunnegan, Jerry Wayne Evans, Osceola, Travis Evans and his wife Glenda, Osceola and Terry Evans, Osceola; many nieces and nephews.
Services for Gary were Saturday, Nov. 25 at the Sheldon-Goodrich Chapel with Greg Mangum officiating.
Musical selections were "Amazing Grace" with Dan and Marinel Greathouse, vocalists and "On the Other Side of Jordan" and "When I Get Where I'm Going".
Casketbearers were David Evans, Richard Evans, Jeff Stottlemire, Brian Hirt, Warren Martin and Steve Dobbs.
Military service was provided by the National Guard Bravo Team.
Interment was in the Osceola Cemetery under the direction of Sheldon-Goodich Funeral Home, Osceola.
