Born in Tennessee in 1816, he moved to Bond County, Illinois when small and emigrated to this county in 1840. August 4, 1870 -- Heaton, Gertrude, aged 7 years, 9 months, died at Roscoe, July 18th. She was the daughter of Mary Haslitt and George Nead Heaton. September 1, 1870 -- Sheldon, John C., died August 28, 1870 at the residence of his father. September 15, 1870 -- Gowen, Isaac Senior, aged 75 years, 10 months, 26 days, died September 11, 1870. Father Gowen had for fourteen years been a citizen of St. Clair County. September 22, 1870 -- Hartzell, William, of Butler Township, died September 21, 1870 of typhoid fever. Deceased was a Minister of the Gospel. October 6, 1870 -- Orr, Ulysses S., son of E.L. and M.A. Orr, died October 1, 1870, aged 3 years, 7 months, & 27 days. October 6, 1870 -- Adams, Willie S., son of David M. & Lucinda A., died October 3, 1870, aged 4 years, 11 months. October 13, 1870 -- Adams, Amerita E., daughter of David M. & Lucinda A., died October 5, 1870, aged 2 years, 9 months. October 13, 1870 -- Dear, Gilbert Wiley, son of Richard D. and Sarah E. Dear of Washington Township, died October 7, 1870, aged 4 years, 4 months and 5 days. October 27, 1870 -- Penn, Mary S., eldest daughter of G.W. & Martha, died October 20, 1870, aged 20 years, 4 months and 26 days. October 27, 1870 -- Marquis, Sarah E., wife of Dr. A.C. Marquis, died October 18, 1870 of typhoid fever, aged 29 years, 9 months, 7 days. Born in Pike County, Ohio, her father H.L. Westfall, emigrated to Missouri in 1852, and settled in the western part of this county. She married in 1863, and leaves a husband, four children, her mother and a sister. November 3, 1870 -- Allcorn, George, aged 22 years, died October 23, 1870. November 3, 1870 -- Allcorn, Mary A., wife of George, and daughter of Anderson & Mary Morton, died October 25, 1870, aged 21 years. Both died of typhoid. December 1, 1870 -- English, Mary M., wife of Jos. L. English, died November 20, 1870, of consumption, aged 34 years, 1 month, 7 days. She was a daughter of Dr. W. Dorrell, born in Benton County, but resided in Osceola and vicinity the greater portion of her life. She leaves a husband and two small children. January 26, 1871 -- Davis, Elizabeth, died January 12, 1871, aged 29 years, 2 months, 4 days. Mrs. Davis was born in Ohio in 1841, came to Missouri in September of 1869, resided near Osceola until her death. A husband and two children survive. February 2, 1871 -- Kerr, Edwin, infant son of James K. and Kate B. Sheley, died January 30, 1871, aged 1 year, 6 months, 19 days. February 2, 1871 -- Clark, Robert, residing on the farm of Daniel E. Young in the southwest portion of this county, drowned a few days ago while attempting to cross Clear Creek on the ice. Deceased had recently come in from Kansas and located in the county. He leaves a wife and children. March 16, 1871 -- Dillie, Dr. Lucies, died March 13, 1871 of pulmonary consumption, at his farm in Washington Township. He was 26 years, 5 months, 8 days. Born Richland County, Ohio, 5 January 1842, he lived Plymouth County, Indiana before coming to St. Clair County in 1866. May 11, 1871 -- Nay, Thomas, died of consumption April 30, 1871, at the home of his brother-in-law near Graham, Indiana. Mr. Nay was 29 years of age. June 1, 1871 -- Barr, William Z. of Washington Township, shot himself through the heart, when his intended bride declined to marry him. June 1, 1871 -- Baker, infant, daughter of Cyrus and Sallie G. Baker, died Washington Township on May 12, 1871. She was 2 weeks, 2 days of age. June 1, 1871 -- Cox, Mary Mildred, wife of Col. J.W. Cox, died in Bonham, Texas, March 19, 1871 of paralysis in the 48th year of her life. Born Charlottesville, Virginia, moved to Richmond, and later to Missouri. At close of the war, she and her husband lived in Osceola some two years before going to Texas. She leaves an aged mother and four children as well as her husband. July 13, 1871 -- Outhwaite, Charles Peabody, infant son of Joseph H. & Ellen P., died July 1, 1871 at residence of E.J. Brush, Esq., Zanesville, Ohio. August 3, 1871 -- Osborn, Burdett Gaines, infant son of William H. & Elizabeth C., died July 31, 1871, aged 4 months, 20 days. September 7, 1871 -- Hopkins, Charles A., infant son of Geo W. & Eliza J., died at Brownington, Henry County, August 28, 1871, aged 10 months, 15 days. September 14, 1871 -- Collins, Nathaniel J., died September 5, 1871, while working in a well on the farm. He was 24 years of age, and a son of Judge Wm. Collins. September 21, 1871 -- Penn, George W., died September 18, 1871 in Lowry, aged 57 years, 8 months, 9 days. Born December 9, 1813 near Spottsylvania Court House, Virginia, and when small the family moved to North Carolina. At 15 he started out in the world for himself, coming west and settling in Sumner County, Tennessee. He came to Missouri in 1839, where he settled in Lexington, engaging in the mercantile business. In 1849 he married Miss Mary Barnett of St. Clair County, and since has made this county his home. He entered the ministry in 1836 and has been an active member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. September 21, 1871 -- Hill, Joseph, only child of John & Mary J. of Taberville, died September 9, 1871, aged 16 months, 17 days. October 5, 1871 -- Barr, Charles W., son of James F. & Kate S., died October 4, 1871 on Coon Creek, aged 2 years, 8 months and 1 day. November 23, 1871 -- De Haven, Elizabeth, wife of Peter De Haven, died at Ritchey's Mill, November 20, 1871, aged 52 yaers. December 7, 1871 -- Robison, Mary Ann, daughter of Judge Thos. F. & Elizabeth Robison, died in Jackson Township November 28, 1871, aged 2 years, 3 months, 6 days. December 31, 1871 -- Ensley, Joseph, instantly killed when thrown from a wagon when the team ran away. He had lived in the county about three years, having bought the John Hoover place. He leaves a wife and seven or eight children. January 4, 1872 -- Gardener, Josie, daughter of Albert G. & Ann E., died December 24, 1871, at residence of Dr. Dozier, of inflammation of the stomach. She was 14 years, 3 months. February 1, 1872 -- Broyles, Albert, infant son of G.H. & Luvernia J., died January 2, 1872, of pneumonia, aged 13 years, 4 months, 19 days. February 15, 1872 -- Dillie, Margaret Annetta, died in Washington Township, January 19, 1872, of consumption, aged 22 years, 3 months, 8 days. March 14, 1872 -- Graham, Robert St. Clair, infant son of R.S. & Mattie V., died at residence of W.H. Scobey, March 10, 1872 of pneumonia, aged 8 months, 25 days. March 21, 1872 -- Ouderkirk, J.H., died about six miles east of Osceola. April 4, 1872 -- Beck, Mrs. Mattie D., niece of Mrs. W.C. Lucas, died March 24, 1872, in Hamilton, Ohio. Mrs. Beck recently lived in Danville, Kentucky. May 2, 1872 -- Smith, Ellen A., wife of Alfred B. Smith, died at her home near DeWitt, Iowa, April 19, 1872, aged 31 years, 9 months, 15 days. May 16, 1872 -- Chinn, Willie, infant son of David & Martha, died April 28, 1872. May 23, 1872 -- Mitchell, Judge William A., aged 49 years, 4 months, 15 days, died suddenly May 10th. He was born in Bourbon County, Kentucky, January 4, 1823. At age six he emigrated to Indiana and in 1857 he came to Missouri. In 1851 he married Miss Colegate T.D. Steel, who with three sons are left to mourn. May 30, 1872 -- Wilson, Elijah E., died at his residence in Taberville of consumption, aged 31 years, 9 months, 7 days. He leaves a widow and children. June 27, 1872 -- Outhwaite, John, died June 1, 1872 at his residence in Cleveland, Ohio, of old age. He was the father of George Outhwaite, and was 93 years old. August 7, 1872 -- Jones, Emma, daughter of S.G. & Mary, died August 4th, aged 9 years, 7 months. August 29, 1872 -- Davis, Charles A., son of L.N. & Sarah, died August 20th, aged 10 months. August 29, 1872 -- Shield, Birdie, 2 year old son of David P. & Elizabeth, died August 25th. August 29, 1872 -- Hicks, Leuvicia J., wife of Jas. L. Hicks, died August 26, 1872, aged 44 years, 11 months, 6 days. Born Lebanon, Tennessee, September 20, 1827, she was a member of the Presbyterian Church. September 26, 1872 -- Davis, Florence E., wife of W.H. Davis, died September 12, 1872 at residence of her parents, A.O. & Jas. M. Shepherd, near Warrensburg, Missouri. Mr. Davis is editor of the Henry County Democrat. October 3, 1872 -- Hicks, Thomas M., father of Jas. L. Hicks, died at the residence of the latter, on September 27, 1872. He was an old settler, aged 74 years, 8 months, born near Guilford Court House, Orange County, North Carolina, and at age 20 he removed to Lebanon, Tennessee where he married. After living there 34 years he emigrated to Missouri taking up residence in Hickory County. He and his wife came to live with their son about a year and a half ago. October 17, 1872 -- Hastain, Miles Humphrey, only son of Wm. S. & Fanny Shirk Hastain, died October 5th, aged 2 years, 9 months, 21 days. October 17, 1872 -- Barber, Lee Chandler, son of Emmerson & Calista Barber, died of diptheria, October 4, 1872, aged 1 year, 20 days. October 17, 1872 -- Barber, Elizabeth Alice, daughter of Emmerson & Calista Barber, died October 13, 1872 of disease of the heart, aged 3 years, 2 months, 13 days. October 24, 1872 -- Durbin, Frederick Lattimore, son of Edward & Mary Durbin, died October 20, 1872, aged 3 years, 11 months, 18 days. October 24, 1872 -- Fisher, George W., died September 3, 1872, near Sacramento, California. He was a former resident of this county who left for California September 15th. October 24, 1872 -- Hubbs, Mark, died October 20, 1872, aged 34 years, 11 months, 13 days. He has been a resident of Osceola several years, and leaves a wife and child. |
