For Rent – Two nice rooms over the J.F. Johnson & Son store. See us at
once. J.F. Johnson & Son.
Mrs. L. Faurot is visiting relatives at Amsterdam, Missouri.
John Francis, of Neosho Falls, Kansas, is a guest in the John H. Lucas
home this week. Mr. Francis is a student of Baker University at
Baldwin, Kansas.
Auctioneer Dick Calvert reports a fine sale at the John T. Adamson
sale here last Saturday, and he also said that The Democrat is getting
out the nicest sale bills he ever saw in this part of the county,
which goes a long way towards making a success of a sale. Mr. Calvert
says he has September dated full now and is dating in October, and
those wishing October dates had better hurry.
The fight that is now going on over the Workmen’s Compensation Law
certainly ought to show the people of this state that the Referendum
Law, which is supposed to be the weapon of the people against unjust
legislation, is nothing more than a huge joke, and can be used by any
interest to block legislation whether the law be good or bad. For our
part, we do not believe in paying the huge sums that our legislature
costs and then tie the laws they pass in the Referendum, for, good or
bad, they are practically certain of defeat at the polls.
The Democrat does not wish to “butt in” on other people’s affairs, but
in a drive through this county Sunday, we could not help but wonder if
the law requiring hedge fences to be cut to a certain height had been
repealed, or whether no one has been trying to enforce it. There are
any number of hedges which have not been trimmed, and the blind
corners are positively dangerous to both motorists and persons driving
a team. We believe that the law covering this is a good one and should
be enforced, not in order to cause anyone any more work than
necessary, but as a safeguard to the public.
