Osceola, MO 23 January 1919 Lowry City. Charley Green of Osceola was looking after business in Lowry City last Saturday. James Sharp of this place was looking after business in Hickory County the latter part of last week. Fayatt Cooper, of Osceola, one of the hustling stock shippers of that town was greeting old friends in Lowry last Monday. Sam Lyons, formerly of this county, who at present lives in Clinton, was shaking hands with old friends in Lowry last Friday. Professor C.E. Higgins of Osceola was in Lowry last Saturday, where he attended the teachers meeting at this place on that day. Lowry City will soon have electric lights so there will be no groping in the dark hereafter as was the case of a night heretofore. Harry Gordon, who done services in France for several months as an American soldier, arrived in Lowry last Sunday where he was greeted by relatives and a host of old friends. Wesley Rains, formerly of this county who moved to Arkansas a number of years ago, living at present near Jonesborough, that state, was in Lowry last Monday. The Lowry grain and elevator company met at the opera house last Monday where among other business that was transacted was the election of seven directors, the names of whom we are not advised. John Nelson, who for several years was section boss on the Frisco railroad at this place, who at present lives at Gerster this county, was in Lowry last Sunday where he met a number of old friends that was very glad to see him once more upon the streets of his former home town. Tom Wears, formerly of this county, who moved to Kansas eight or ten years ago, where he has since which time continuously resided, arrived in the city a few days ago, his visit to Lowry at this time is on account of the serious illness of his mother, Mrs. J.F. Wears of this place. The remains of Mrs. Don Kennedy, formerly of this county, who died near Dunegan, Polk County the latter part of last week, was shipped to Lowry last Saturday, the interment of which was in the Barnett cemetery, attended by relatives and a number of old friends, the funeral services was conducted b y Rev. J.M. Hawkins of this place. Kings Prairie We are having fine weather at present. Mrs. Alice Vaughn is visiting her mother, Liza Cauthon. We learn that Joe Dull has purchased the Bill Simms farm. T.R. Hammond's family are able to be up now after having the flu. Mrs. Fannie Hemphill has had the flu but is better at this writing. Jack Norris spent Thursday night with J.M. Bishop and family. Mrs. Bert Todd of Belton is visiting this week with John Todd and family. Long Ridge Miss Neva Burrows spent Sunday with Opal and Ruth Roberts. Vida Scott visited with Stella and Laura Stephens last Sunday. Mrs. John Stephens and son visited at the home of Mr. Vaughn. The Long Ridge school has started again since the flu is getting more scarce. Chas. Phinney has been on the sick list for the last few days but is some better now. Wilbur Allen visited with Roy Stephens last Sunday. They were planning for the future. Nora Daniel of Gerster and Hazel Babcock of Weaubleau visited with Mrs. Davis and family Sunday. Ace Davis was seen in Vista last Sunday. He sated that he was discharged. He brought with him a friend, Mr. Cook, who will visit for a few days. Fred Stiles of Camp Punston was home for the first time last week. He was allowed four days. He expects his discharge soon. He seems in the best of health. Mrs. J.L. Frala and two children of Kansas City was visiting with her mother, Mrs. Davis, last week. Mrs. Frala is not in very good health and had to return to the City in a short time. Clarence and Willie Holcombe are visiting home and friends. Clarence lives in Zion City, Ill., and Willie in Nebraska and also their brother of Camp Punston was home some days ago on a four day pass. River View Sam Crawford and wife are the proud parents of a baby girl. Beulah Crawford spent Sunday afternoon at Jesse Culbertson's. Iver Boling and family visited with J.F. Culbertson and family Sunday. R.H. Pritchard and wife spent Sunday afternoon with Elmer Waite and wife. Ellen Francis spent last week with Miss Virgie Francis of near Harwood, Mo. George Allen, Jr. and family visited with relatives of this vicinity Sunday. Magdaline Ellerman has been visiting at Sam Crawford's the past two weeks. We have been having splendid weather the past week but the roads have been very muddy. Jim Baker and child, and Mrs. Perry Lloyd have been visiting with O.W. Cole and wife and Geo. Deans and family. Mary, Alice and Allen Carriker, Nicholas, Edith, Burlie, Jesse and Elmer Pritchard visited at R.H. Pritchard's Sunday. Sergeant Guffey, who has returned from overseas, made an excellent speech at River View schoolhouse last Monday night. John Francis and family attended the funeral services of A. Calhoon, spent Sunday night with M.H. Francis and family. Several met at U.E. Carriker's Saturday evening and enjoyed themselves by playing various games. Those present were: John, Charley and Willie Allen, Ben, Fern and Terrel Nicholas, Edith, Burlie, Jess and Elmer Pritchard. Monegaw W.A. Smith went to Greenwood, this state, Monday on business. James Cave went to Stanley, Kans., the first of this week on a visit. The stork left a little girl at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Paul last Wednesday night. L.C. and M.W. Cleveland went to Osceola Monday to see their brother, Will, who is dangerously ill. There was a large congregation out to hear Rev. Smith of the Holiness church, both morning and evening Sunday last. Next Sunday Rev. Henderson will be here to deliver the message. Everybody come out to hear him. Let's fill the house. The choir is preparing special music. Green Valley Miss Mollie Allen visited the school Wednesday. Mollie Allen is visiting with Mrs. Mathew McCullick. Emma Durham has been on the sick list the past week. Chas. Horn and family spent Sunday with C.O. Allen's. Etta and Ben Coleman visited with C.A. Smith Sunday. Beoery Allen and family visited with J.J. Allen Sunday evening. Mrs. W.J. Allen is set on the sick list suffering with rheumatism. Miss Ethel Ward spent Saturday and Sunday with her parents of Roscoe. L.M. Wilson and children and Mr. J.J. Allen made a trip to Lelia Saturday. The dance was well attended at H.L. Hammet's Friday night. Everyone reported a good time. H.T. Hammett and Charley Phillips spent Sunday night at River View Christian Endeavor. Visitors at J.J. Allen's were: Mrs. L.M. Wilson and children and Miss Nancy and Ethel Prithard. John Lee Frances' folks came down from Harwood to attend the funeral of Rev. A. Calhoon at the Valley Church Sunday. Visitors at Frank Coleman's Sunday were: Mrs. Jim Coleman and son Merl, George Allison and wife and daughter Gretchel. There has been several days of sunshine but yet plenty of mud. The farmers will begin to think it is spring if the pretty weather continues. Visitors at Elmer Waite's the past week were Louis Waite and A.M. Guffey, a soldier from France. They are cousins of Mr. Waite's. There was a good talk given at the schoolhouse Friday night by A.M. Guffey, a soldier who was just back from France, describing his soldier life. Visitors at school Friday were: Mrs. Nora Allison, Mrs. M. Medcalf and two children, Miss Mae Carricker, Jewel Hammett, John Allen, Miss Daisy Nicholas and little Maynard Nicholas. |
