New This Week.
The following advertisements are new this week:
Delinquent Taxes – S.H. Donovan.
Farm for Sale – C.J. Barr.
After Delinquents.
By a notice in another column it will be seen that Collector
Donovan is after delinquent personal taxes. He informs us that a
considerable amount of personal taxes remain unpaid.
Notice.
Notice is hereby given to those who have had work in my shop,
awaiting their call for months past, that unless they call for it
immediately, I will sell the same to pay charges.
R.W. Hanks.
Religions.
Rev. D.C. Milner will preach next Sabbath morning, at 11 o’clock.
We have been requested to remind our citizens of the appointment of
Rev. L.C. Marvin, of Clinton, to preach in Osceola, on the first
Sabbath in August.
A Desirable Farm.
Among the new advertisements will be found one by C.J. Barr
offering for sale his farm, located on Gallinipper, some seven miles
north of Osceola. It is one of the finest farms in that section of the
country, and is most desirably located.
Newspaper Change.
We notice by the last issue of the Democrat that a change of
proprietors has recently taken place in that establishment, - J.W.
Dooly having disposed of the office to Thad. M. Gardner. We wish Mr.
G. a prosperous connection with the press.
S.S. Concert.
On Sunday evening next there will be a Sunday School Concert at
the Presbyterian Church. The scholars are fast acquiring a taste for
and a knowledge of music under the direction of the Superintendent and
teachers, which adds immeasurably to the pleasures of the school.
News!
“Go away from home to learn the news”. Apropos:
“A building occupied as a Drug Store, at Chalk Level, St. Clair
county, was struck by lightning, set on fire and with contents burned
up, a few days since, togher with two or three other homes.”
We clip from an exchange the above. It is news to us. Perhaps it may
have occurred, - probably not. We can’t hear of it.
Personal.
On Friday last we were favored with a call from W.M. Prior and
R.S. Emmons, of Appleton City. They report Appleton as lively and
prosperous.
On Tuesday D.T. Short, Esq., of Monegaw, paid us a short visit. Of
crops in his section he gives a very favorable report.
Appleton City Globe.
We have before us the prospectus of the Appleton City Globe, a
paper proposed to be established at Appleton City, this county, by
P.J. Coston. The motto of the Glove will be “Neutral in nothing,
Independent in all things”, while its object will be “the advancement
of their town, the improvement of the surrounding country, and of
carrying into effect the New County project”, of which Appleton City
is the proposed county seat. It will make its appearance about the 1st
of August.
Back in St. Clair.
Some six months ago Mr. Hiram Short, one of the oldest and most
respected farmers of the county, sold his farm on Gallinipper and
removed to Lafayette county, in which “change of base” he was soon
followed by his son-in-law, Mr. David Chinn. Six month sufficed the
former up in Lafayette, and recently he returned to this county to
settle here permanently; Mr. Chinn is now making his arrangements to
return also. Mr. Chinn informs us that with all Lafayette’s boasted
charms, that for men who wish to engage in the stock business, in
whole or in part, this county beats her “all hollow”. Good for St.
Clair.
