Mail Carrier Honored
The patrons of Route 1, Rockville, Mo., to show their appreciation of their faithful carrier, Russell E. Duley, who retired Dec. 30, 1933, pulled off a reception Wednesday night, Dec. 27, at Community Hall in Rockville, that was one of the outstanding events of the Christmas season. He and the "'gude wife"' had been invited to spend the evening at Dr. Freeman's. She, being "'next"', steered them down past the Hall which was filled to overflowing. They stopped to peep in to see what was going on, and were invited in and heard some one say: "'This is some show to put on for Duley."' Mr. Duley was then ushered on to the stage and seated in a fine upholstered rocker by a stand which held a huge bouquet of beautiful flowers. Seated on the stage were his postmaster, Harley Kleppinger, and his substitute, Johnny Robinett, Ed A. Wilson, carrier of Route 2, who succeeds Mr. Duley on Route 1, D. D. Hitt and wife, Mesdames R. E. Duley, Chas. Vickers, O. Seelinger, Messrs. John Bradley, Chester Roberts, Misses Pearl Kemper and Velah Hunt. After the excitement subsided, with Mrs. Harley Kleppinger at the piano, a quartet rendered some fine music. Stunt by Mrs. O. Seelinger. Then splendid talks were given by Misses Kemper and Hunt, Chester Roberts, and D. D. Hitt, ex-postmaster, and who is again a candidate for the position.
Mr. John Bradley made the presentation speech and gave Mr. Duley the chair that he had been occupying - a gift from his patrons. Mrs. Chas. Vickers, and ex-patron, in well chosen words, then presented the large bouquet from his ex-patrons and also spoke in behalf of the absent ones. Almost 32 years ago Mr. Duley then a young man in his early twenties, with our jolly good E. F. Turner, lined up with their horsedrawn vehicles and started out as the first R.F.D. carriers out of Rockville. Mr. Turner retired last year. E. A. Wilson was put on in 1904 and if nothing happens he will be retired this year-1934.
These boys have seen many changes during their years of service, starting out with horse and cart, then came the team with a mail wagon, followed by the motorcycle and ending up with Chevrolet cars. Through storm and sunshine the carrier seldom if ever failed us.
