Appleton City Journal NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS: For Sale - Extra nice turnips, 75 cents per bushel. Inquire of Chas. Ditty. Mrs. M. P. Kinkead visited friends in Schell City the first of the week. Mrs. Jas. Frala, of Montrose, was a visitor in this city last Saturday. Mrs. S. L. Dean and Mrs. Anna Smiley of Rockville were guests of Mrs. Will Harris, Tuesday. Mrs. O. H. Antrim returned Tuesday morning from a few days' stay in Sedalia. Smith's Book Store has a very complete stock of Books, Bibles and Toys at no higher prices than in former years. Mrs. W. J. Lush of near Ohio went to El Dorado Springs last Friday for a visit with her other, Mrs. B. J. Darby. Paul and Louis Miller, students of the State University, were among the visitors here for Thanksgiving with home folks. Mrs. Nellie Zimmerman and Misses Dollie and Pearle Griggs were guests of Mrs. Rapp in Sedalia the latter part of the week. The Annual Bazaar and Diner given under the auspices of the Ladies Aid Society of the M. E. Church, will be held Friday, December 15th. The place will be announced later. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas, of Pleasant Gap, returned from Warrensburg last Tuesday morning, where they had been to attend the funeral of their nephew, Willis Thomas. Miss Lenora Theilmann left Wednesday morning for her home in Kansas City, after a few days' visit with old friends in this city. While here she was the guest of Miss Mary Clark. A regular meeting of the Hudson Farm and Home Improvement Club will be held Friday night and if the weather is favorable for a large attendance Profs. H. H. Maxey and Wright will be present and deliver addresses. Of course all are invited. Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Holaday and baby, who have been visiting in the home of the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Stanley, for the past few days, left Tuesday morning for Cherryvale, Kans., for a visit with Mr. and Mrs. F. L. Schultheiss. Mr. and Mrs. Julius Mauck, who a few days ago sold their residence property here to Col. Dick Calvert, are moving back to the farm in Hudson township, where they will spend the winter with their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Clay Mauck, and in the early spring will probably go to the home of their son-in-law, whose wife it will be remembered recently died, to spend the summer. Their many friends in this city regret that these excellent people have found it to their interest to remove from town. Miss Jennie Baskerville spent a few days last week as the guest of friends in Nevada. Mrs. C. A. Davis returned to Windsor, Sunday, after having spent Thanksgiving with her mother, Mrs. Anna Frost. Robert P. East, who is attending medical school in St. Louis, was home for a visit with relatives and friends over Thanksgiving. Rastus George, of Nevada, was here last week for a visit with the family of his brother-in-law, W. D. Schmitt. He has just returned from a trip to Montana. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Covey and children returned to their home in Nevada last Friday after a visit with the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Covey. J. H. Fennewald delivered hogs to the Appleton City market Monday. Mrs. Chris Hegnauer is on the sick list at this writing. Mrs. J. M. Link called on Mrs. Chris Hegnauer last week. OHIO, ROUTE TWO: J. Purviance and wife and Albert Parks and wife spent Sunday at the Rufus Parks home. Mrs. Katie Fuller and son, Mel Perkins and wife and Daisy Perkins spent Sunday at Grover Parks'. Miss Verda Underwood spent Sunday with her friend, Fern Fitch. Miss Lena Murphy spent last week with her aunt May Harvey. This community was made sad last Saturday when the news came that Henry Johnson was dead. Mr. Johnson's team ran away with him last week and mashed his hand. Drs. Smith of Osceola and Divine of Appleton City were summoned at once. They dressed the hand but on Wednesday blood poison had set in and he was taken to Kansas City where everything possible was done for him but to no avail. He leaves a wife and several children to mourn his loss. Each and every one in this community extends heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family. HOOVER AND TABERVILLE: Jim Carroll and family, of Osceola, visited at Dan Waters' the latter part of last week. Several from this neighborhood attended the party at Dave Baldwin's Thursday night. There will be a pie supper at Hoover Saturday night, December 9th. Miss Jennie Boch returned to El Dorado Springs Tuesday. A crowd of young people went down to the river Monday night and had a wienie roast. All report a fine time. Protracted meeting began at the Taberville Methodist church Tuesday night. Mr. Fouts and T. Mrs. Russell Williams and Opal visited Mrs. Wichert several days the past week. Charlie Brownfield is suffering from a badly mashed foot, caused by dropping a cement block on it. John Aldridge, county assessor, spent Thursday night with Jake Baldwin. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Neale visited relatives in town Wednesday night. Mrs. A. L. Lough spent the day last Monday with Mrs. Lester McConnell. Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Casperson helped Charlie Brownfield butcher hogs last Friday. Mrs. W. H. Thomas entertained company from Clinton Thanksgiving day. Mrs. John Johnson and Lorin spent Sunday with Earl Johnson and wife. Mr. and Mrs. Skaggs were shopping in the city Saturday. Several from this neighborhood are attending the revival meetings at the Spring Grove church. ROCKY HILL NEWS: Mrs. Kauffman is no better at this writing. Ira Brown and family took Thanksgiving dinner with John Diehl and family. Misses Emma Wix and Marie Wolf, both of Butler high school, visited Friday with the Pleasant Ridge school. Jim Nevius, of near Johnson City, was in this vicinity Monday buying furs. Miss Pauline Raybourn spent Saturday with her grandmother Frost. Mrs. Ira Brown and Mrs. George Minnick spent Saturday with Mrs. Kauffman. Mrs. James Deffenbaugh and son Johnnie spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. R. F. Bellomy and family. Francis Bellomy has had a very sick horse the past week but it is some better now. Eck Melton sawed wood one day last week. Mrs. Deffenbaugh and son Johnnie spent Friday with Mr. and Mrs. John Jacobs. Abe Brown and son Willie spent Monday with Mr. and Mrs. Ira Brown. Misses Lelah, Rusha and Mr. Logan Rains entertained the following last Tuesday evening: Misses Rosa Brown and Pauline Raybourn and Messrs. Casuel and Clarence Varnes and Ray Morgan, and all report a jolly time. The evening was spent with music and games. PLEASANT GAP: John Fennewald and family motored over to the Baptist meeting Sunday evening. Mrs. Fred Gaus visited her mother, Mrs. R. B. Wix last week. Mrs. Walter Steiner, of Rockville, visited her mother, Mrs. Durst, last week. Mrs. A. Kemper returned last week from a stay in Colorado. Mrs. Neider, who is staying with her daughter, Mrs. J. Lee, is very low. Mrs. E. Hall, Lena Schapeler, Mrs. John Fennewald, Mrs. B. F. Pointius, Mrs. Kuglar and daughters, "'Grandma"' Diehl, and Mrs. Durst and daughter, Mrs. Steiner, called on Mrs. John Kauffman last Friday. Chris Yoss and family, of Prairie City, spent Sunday at the home of A. Filgus. W. A. Sutton and family and Elmer Sutton and wife spent Thanksgiving with J. H. Fennewald and family. Mrs. Helen Steuck of Webb City visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Melchoir Fox, last week. Earl Leeper sawed wood for John Fennewald Friday. Elmer Sutton butchered a 500-lb. hog last Wednesday. Elmer Beshore and family spent Thanksgiving with Willie Beshore and family. Mrs. Fred Kaum, of Rich Hill, and Mrs. Tom Korum, of Calhoun, are at the bedside of their mother, Mrs. Neider. We learn that A. Filgus has sold his farm to W. Z. Baker. Mrs. W. Finklang and Mrs. Simon Schapler called on Mrs. J. M. Link Friday afternoon. Farmers are all busy plowing in this neighborhood now, as the ground works fine. Frank Davis and family Sundayed with Herman Fisher and family. Henry Diehl and Grace Fennewald attended preaching at the Baptist church Wednesday night. PRAIRIE HOME: Miss Russie Morris spent Saturday night and Sunday at the James Keeton home. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Grass spent Sunday at the same place. Misses Annis and Mary Barnett and Armitta Thompson spent Saturday night and Sunday at the Ira Garnett home at Chalk Level. Mr. Carpenter, who has been quite poorly for so long, was able to attend Sunday School last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Morris, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Moore and children, Mr. and Mrs. Puffenbarger and Mr. and Mrs. Payne were callers at N. D. Lewis's, Sunday. Prairie Home was well represented at Washington school house Tuesday night and Green Wednesday night at the pie suppers. While Mrs. Addis Allison was washing her little son last Sunday morning he began crying and held his breath so long that Dr. Gray was called, but by the time the doctor got there he was all right.
