Mrs. Franklin Finch, one of The Journal’s most highly esteemed lady friends in Appleton City, favored us with a substantial call Tuesday.

Miss Ida Schuchman, who has been visiting relatives at Brunswick, Mo. for several months returned to her home in this city last Thursday.

Mrs. W.H. Penix, of El Dorado Springs, came over Tuesday afternoon to spend a few days with her daughter, Mrs. Will B. Stout, and mother, Mrs. W.H. Nalley.

Mrs. F.P. Browning, of Reynard, and sister, Mrs. Geo. W. Holland, near this city, went down to Nevada Tuesday noon to make a short visit with relatives, returning home Wednesday afternoon.

Mrs. H.P. Cockerell, accompanied by her daughter, Miss Mollie, honored The Journal with a call Saturday. Mrs. Cockerell ordered the paper sent to her daughter, Mrs. Gertie Powers, at Stroud, Oklahoma, for one year.

Last Wednesday evening while Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Schellman were quietly sitting in their home, their house was invaded by a party of neighbors, who came in to “surprise” Mrs. Schellman, the occasion being her birthday anniversary. The hostess soon recovered from the shock, and made everybody feel at home, and a most pleasant time was spent. Refreshments of elegant cake, coffee and float were served, and at a late hour the guests departed wishing Mrs. Schellman many happy years. Those present were: Guy Edgerton and wife, Thos. Streiff and wife, P.C. Mendenhall and wife, Will Grob and wife, J.P. East and wife, Chas. Vail and wife, Chas. Hilton and wife, Mr. J.O. Brooks, Mesdames, J.A. Gerard, J.B. Wright, Frank Elmore, W.I. Walbridge, Misses Bonnie McBride, Sophia Schellman, Jennie and Ruby Wright.

Will B. Stout attended to business in the Probate court in Osceola Monday and Tuesday.

Mert Clark went to San Antonio, Texas, Monday evening, where he expects to complete his apprenticeship as a jeweler and watchmaker. Mert is an exemplary young man and will succeed where he drops anchor.

Among the new names placed in The Journal’s big book of regular readers this week is that of Mr. W.H. Laue, the gentleman who recently leased the J.W. Potter farm a short distance southeast of the city.

Mr. J.F. McDavitt, of Round Prairie, accompanied by his ward, Miss Maud Davis, of this city, went over to Osceola Monday to make annual settlement in the probate court of the estate of M.F. Davis, deceased.

John Barnett, who reside near Mt. Zion, this county, sent The Journal office a few days ago the finest Ben Davis apple pie we have seen this season. It would have done credit to anything that was on exhibition at Omaha.

Mr. F.I. Johnson has the figures opposite his name on the margin of The Journal advanced another year. F.I. has been a staunch and valued friend of this paper from the time it passed under the present management seventeen years ago.

Mr. James Holland who has been absent in the western country for some time, came in from Omaha a few days ago to pay a visit to his father, Mr. W.A. Holland, of this city, and is receiving a hearty greeting at the hands of his many young friends in town and the surrounding country.

Messrs. A. Buskirk and John Baldwin, two of the well known stockmen of this section, took their departure from this place Monday evening for Raton, New Mexico, to which place they go with a view of buying a large stock ranch. Mr. Baldwin was accompanied by his step-son, John Chambers, Jr.
