Appleton City Journal
Appleton City, MO 29 September 1898 The Opening of the Fall and Winter Millinery on last Saturday was a gala day for the ladies of Appleton City and vicinity. The day was an ideal September one and everybody was in a cheerful frame of mind, and bent on seeing the elegant display of millinery goods, which were tastily arranged at the stores of Mrs. J.R. Pickerill and Mrs. J.B. Wright. At each place great skill was shown in the arrangement of every detail, and the goods and decorations were made so attractive that they were the envy of every eye. Hats galore were to be seen and tried on, and many returned home happy in the possession of a new fall hat. Appleton City is proud of her up-to-date Millinery establishments. Mrs. Charles Wheeler, of this city, left with The Journal a few days ago a “freak of nature”, the like of which has never before come under our notice. It is a pair of gourds grown together in such a manner that they may properly be termed the Siamese Twins in the gourd line. Mr. F.I. Johnson met with a painful accident Saturday morning while attempting to saddle a horse in his barn, at which time the animal threw himself back against the stall partition in such a manner as to catch Mr. Johnson’s arm between the horse and the timber, with the result that the arm was thrown out of joint and somewhat bruised. Dr. Cline was immediately called and afforded all the relief possible. Mr. Johnson will be compelled to carry the member in a “sling” for some time to come. The time of the year has come, and every man knows it, when patience and christian character will be put to a test. That stove must go up, and though your better-half may stand by and with pleasant smiles give directions how to make the joints of pipe fit, it is no go, you can’t do it; you skin your fingers, mash your thumb, blacken your face and clothes, use a few cuss words, and before the job is completed silently swear that in the future you will hire that stove put up if it costs a ten dollar bill. Hayden who has been quite sick with intermittent fever for the past two weeks, is slowly recovering. Work has been commenced on Dr. Cline’s new office building, which is to be erected n the lot adjoining the Durley Hotel on the north. John R. Baugh has recently had the interior of his store building repapered and repainted and everything about the establishment looks neat as a new pin. The buggy horse of Mr. Lee Talbott, was severely cut by barbed wire recently, and it will not be fit for use for many months, if it recovers. Barbed wire has ruined hundreds of good horses in every community where it is used. To Cure a Cold in One Day. Take Laxative Bromo Quinine Tablets.
