JANE "Jennie" (WILLIAMS) TALLY

JANE WILLIAMS was born around 1790, possibly in Georgia. (Tennessee and Alabama have also been given as a possible birthplace.) These three states are close in proximity and close to Crows Creek where the Tally’s and Williams families lived.

State and County lines often changed, so the actual birthplace could have been any of these places. My guess is that she was born near Crows Creek in Franklin County, TN.

Her parents were ELIJAH WILLIAMS and Elizabeth (possibly Hayes) and she is first known child. Nothing is known of her younger years.

First record to date is her marriage to JOHN TALLY, Jr. in Tennessee on 20 June 1815.

According to County History books, they moved from Franklin County, Tennessee to Pike County, Missouri in 1825. They were still in Pike County in the 1830 Census, in Rives County (later Henry County) in the 1840 Census , and in the St. Clair County Census of 1850. They built their homestead in the bend of the Osage River and area is still known as TALLY BEND.)

Children (known) of John TALLY & Jane WILLIAMS:

1.Sarah “Sallie” N. Tally-born- 13 August 1816 in TN.

2.Elizabeth W. Tally- born-3 June 1818, in Missouri.

Records show the family was in Pike County, Missouri by1825- History books say the parents were early settlers but if
Elizabeth was born in the year of 1818, they must have been in Missouri before that date.

3. NANCY HOLLIDAY TALLY—born- 19 August 1820 in MO. Married to JOHN BUNCH in Henry County, MO. 15 September 1839. She died 1880/81 (date is not legible) and is buried in Landaker Cemetery, St. Clair County, MO. (is by the 80 acres owned by Daniel Williams)

4. Mary Jane Tally- born 9 March 1822 in MO.

5. George Washing Tally- born 24or 30th of December 1824 in MO.

6. Thomas C. Tally-born-18 January1827. (he fought and died during the War with Mexico and is buried in Santa Fe, NM. His father received 160 acres of bounty land for Thomas’s death.)

7. Clary Ann Tally- born 10 April 1829.

8. John Mabry—born 23 May 1831. Pike County, MO
.
9. William James “Jim” Levi Tally- born 9 April 1835.

Jane’s brother, Elijah Williams, a Baptist Minister, of Polk County, MO. organized the Bethel Church, one of oldest, if not the oldest Church in Polk Township. It was the only Church for miles around and since John Tally was active, no doubt Jane was a member in this Church. John and Jane’s son, George Washington Tally, a Baptist minister, was a member, as was Jane’s sister, Nancy Williams Harper and her husband.

John Tally preceded Jane in death on 2 September 1861. She and T.J. Ferrier, J.P. were executors of John’s extensive Estate.

Jane WILLIAMS Tally died, the 2nd of September 1861 in St. Clair County, MO. and is buried in the family plot on the hill, west of the old John Tally home (cabin) in St. Clair County, MO.
It appears a decade passed before her Estate was settled.

 ELIJAH WILLIAMS, Sr.

Many of the Coves in Franklin County, Tennessee have the names of the early settlers, and WILLIAMS COVE is no exception. The fertile lands are found in these coves and in the valley of the Elk River and its tributaries.

According to Franklin County History and the family history of Sherrod Williams, of Franklin County, “Five WILLIAMS brothers came from Wales to Virginia. All served in the Revolutionary War.”

Possibly Elijah was one of these brothers, but lack proof. This IS probably true because of the similarity in family names, property in close proximity, marriages, etc.

The majority of this information on Elijah Williams, Sr. has been sent by Dr. John Copenhaver, (another descendent) who has diligently researched our ancestor.

ELIJAH WILLIAMS was born around 1760 in Pittsylvania, Virginia. His father may have been named "ELISHA". Two “Elishas” are listed in the 1790 Census for Virginia.

One researcher says Elisha Williams IS the father of Elijah Sr. and grandfather of our JANE (WILLIAMS) TALLY and has the line back to early 1600’s, but no documentation given for proof.

Elijah Williams is listed in a VA. Census Personal Property Taxes for 1787 List B, in Pittsylvania, VA. He is taxed for one animal.

ELIJAH married the 26th of June 1791 in Virginia in Frederick County, VA Elizabeth Hayes. (No documentation)

A Deed for ELIJAH, Sr. was found in the possession of Elijah Williams, Jr. (brother of JANE WILLIAMS who married JOHN TALLY)- dated, 6 November 1794, for 175 acres on Cascade Creek in Pittsylvania County, VA. This land was sold the 21 September1795, to Joseph G. Gilliam. The Deed was signed by Elijah and Elizabeth (her mark) and proved by witnesses.
