CAPT. CHARLES E. SPEDDEN (1842 - 1909)
Note: Mary E. Bruce, daughter of Simeon Bruce. See
Simeon Bruce page for further
information on this family.
Charles E. Spedden was born in February 1842 Maryland, son of Edward and
Mary H. Spedden. His father (Edward) was the son of Edward & Nancy Spedden,
of Cambridge, Dorchester, MD.
Charles is found in 1850, living in Pettis Co., MO. His father had died by
the 1860 census. It appears that most of the Spedden clan remained in
Maryland, while the branch of Charles family migrated to Missouri.
In 1850 the only Spedden households found in Pettis Co., MO are Edward
Spedden and family, and a Sherwood Spedden who appears to be Edward’s
brother, who probably arrived shortly before the census. Sherwood is found
living in a boarding house with no occupation listed. Edward was born 20
September 1795, while Sherwood was born about 1810.
Edward Spedden, father of Capt. Charles Spedden, is listed in 1850 as a
Physician. In 1860 he was deceased, and his widow Mary H. was running a
boarding house in Georgetown, Pettis Co., MO. Edward’s family is not
complete, but there appears to have been children:
1 - H.S., female, born about 1822.
2 - Robert Rush, born about 1823, married Melcina Elizabeth Thompson in
Pettis Co., MO, was a physician the same as his father but later became
County Clerk of Pettis Co., MO, then moved to Oregon where he became the
County Clerk for Clatsop County.
3 - Edward T., born about 1829.
Mary H. was probably Edward’s second wife. Charles appears be the only
living child to that marriage, being born in 1842. Charles Spedden married
Mary E. Bruce, daughter of Simeon Bruce of St. Clair Co., MO.
