The Civil War
As it relates to St. Clair County, Missouri

CAPT. ANDERSON MORTON (1814 – 1899)

St. Clair County Republican
Thursday, 25 May 1899

Capt. John M. Ragland of this city, in referring to the death of Capt. A. Morton who died at Taberville a few weeks since, recalled a story of the war of 1861-5 in which Mr. Ragland’s father and Mr. Morton figured as follows:
Captain Morton commanded a company of soldiers and in marching through Henry county on one occasion two sorrel horses disappeared from the farm of Nathaniel M. Ragland, who lived tow miles north of Clinton on Town creek. In some way Neighbor Tom McGinnis, who lived in a southeasterly direction on Deer creek, learned of the loss of the animals and recognized them among those in Morton’s command. Acting as mediator, Mr. McGennis, knowing that Mr. Ragland and Capt. Morton worshipped under the same vine and fig tree as disciples of Christ, introduced Bro. Ragland and Bro. Morton and related the loss of the horses. Notwithstanding the fact that the two men’s sympathies were at variance on war issues, the horses were promptly released.
