Galen Carpenter

Galen Glenn Carpenter, 75, formerly of Maryville, died Sunday, July 31, 1994 at his home in Shenandoah, Iowa, following a lengthy illness.

Born Feb. 22, 1919 in Elmo, to Dana O. and Pearl A. Goodwin Carpenter, he was retired from a position with the Missouri Farmers Association,Maryville.

He married Stella Branson, July 6, 11947 in Maryville. The couple moved to Shenandoah in 1982.

Mr. Carpenter received his education in the Elmo schools. He entered the U. S. Army in February, 1942 and (served in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre during World War II, receiving his honorable discharge, Nov. 26,1945. He was a member of the New Testament Church of Christ and American Legion Post 88 of Shenandoah.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Wendell and a sister, Minnie Lee Carpenter.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; four sons, David Carpenter of Kansas City, Dennis Carpenter of Kansas City, Donnis Carpenter of Dallas Center, Iowa, and Steve Carpenter of Skidmore; five brothers, Charlie Carpenter, St. Joseph, Byron Carpenter of Burlington Junction, Landis Carpenter of St. Joseph, Calvin Carpenter of Essex, Iowa, and Doyle Carpenter of Elmo; five sisters, Wilma Hunter of Excelsior Springs, Velma Carpenter of St. Joseph, Dorothy Burch of Shenandoah, Iowa, Joan Livengood of Elmo, and Lois Everhart of Hopkins; 10 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Family visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Hackett Funeral Home, Shenandoah, Iowa.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the New Testament Church of Christ, Shenandoah, with the Rev. Doug Hanson and the Rev. Jeff Arnold officiating.

Military Rites and interment will be in the Lamar Cemetery, Elmo.

Memorials may be made to the Community Hospice of Iowa.

Alma Irene Calfee, Clarinda, Iowa formerly of Elmo, died Tuesday, Aug. 2,1994 at Goldenrod Manor in Clarinda.

Wilma Walker

Wilma M. Walker, 98, Parnell, died Aug. 2,1994 atMaryville Health Care Center, Maryville.

Born May 11, 1896 near Ravenwood to Elmer Cort and Mary Phlena Stevenson, she was a teacher in Nodaway and Andrew counties and a principal of the Hay Middle School in Hay, Wash, from 1947 to 1950, before retiring.

She married William C. Walker, June 10,1925 in Atchison, Kan.

Ms. Walker was a graduate of Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville. She was a member of the Parnell United Methodist Church, since 1915; a member of the Parnell United Methodist Women; and a former member of the Order of the Eastem Star.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one sister, Geneviene Leand, and four brothers, Troy Herschel, Eldoras, Raymond and Alvin Millikan.

Survivors include three brothers, Richard B. Millikan, Riverside, Lloyd Millikan, Cameron, and Merlin Millikan, Atchison, Kan.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation is currently under way at Price Funeral Home, Maryville.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday atPrice Funeral Home Chapel, Maryville.

Ellen Wagner, 86, Maryville, died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 1994 at Maryville Health Care Center.

Ruth Price

Ruth H. Robb Price, 85, Maryville, died Saturday, July 16, 1994 at her home.

Born Nov. 8, 1908 near Pickering, to Frank and Elva Wray Hinton, she was a homemaker.

She married David W. Robb, Oct. 13, 1927 in Pickering. He was the president of the Bank of Pickering and preceded her in death in 1944. She married John W.Price, Sept. 17,1964 in Atchison, Kan. He was a Maryville mortician and preceded her in death in 1991.

Mrs. Price, a Maryville resident since 1942, was a graduate of College High School, Maryville. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and had served as one of its deacons. For 19 years, she was a member of the National Guild of Decoupeurs, which cited her for a three-panel screen she exhibited at its National Convention in St. Louis; she was president of Chapter K, PEO Sisterhood, Hopkins, when it was chosen as the model chaper at the Missouri State PEO Convention; more recently she had been affiliated with Chapter L, PEO Sisterhood, Maryville.

Survivors include one son, Phillip David Robb of Los Angeles; three sisters, Hildred Warner of Lynchburg, Tenn., Doris Rogers of Cordova, Tenn., and Mary Louise Hinton of Pickering; and 13 nieces and nephews.

Visitation is currently under way at Price Funeral Home Chapel, Maryville.

Memorial Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, Maryville. The Rev. Robert H. Ceperley will present the eulogy with the Rev. Ann Brizendine presiding.

Burial will be in Hopkins Cemetery, Hopkins. Shawna Zech, president, and other members of Chapter L, PEO, will conduct a graveside memorial ritual.

Phillip Robb has founded an endowment fund for Fine Arts books at the Maryville Public Library in his mother's name. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the fund be given in memory of Mrs. Price.

Hugh McDonald

Services for Hugh Douglas "Doug" McDonald, 88, Maryville, were held Saturday, July 16, 1994 at Price Funeral Home Chapel, Maryville, with the Rev. Ray Forsyth officiating.

Mr. McDonald died July 12,1994 in St. Joseph.

Pallbearers were David Smith, Harry Doak Jr., Mark D. Moles, Rodger B. Moles, M. Steven Moles and Douglas W. Johnson.

Peggy Reed was the organist and Ray Forsyth was the vocalist.

Burial was in Nodaway Memorial Gardens, Maryville.

Juanita Wharton

Services for Juanita Wharton, 70, Maryville, were held Friday, July 15, 1994 at St. Gregory's Catholic Church, Maryville with Fr. John Leitner officiating.

Ms. Wharton died July 10,1994 in Kansas City.

Pallbearers were Joe Patzner, Bob Collins, Tim Westfall, Bob Westfall, Richard Westfall and Richard Dannels.

Ed Staab was an honorary pallbearer.

Sue Dorrel was the lector. Rosie I Archer, Cale Archer and Sadie Archer were the gift-bearers. Bryce Nielson, Clinton Nielson and Benjamin Lipiec were acolytes. Clyde Dorrel, George Walter and Raymond Schuster were ushers.

Mary Noel was the organist and Jason Barbosa was the vocalist.

Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Maryville.

Ronald Slagle

Ronald "Ronnie" Myrick Slagle, 47, Stanberry, died Thursday, July 14, l994 in Stanberry.

Born June 4,1947 in St. Joseph to Ivan Harper and Virginia Elizabeth Walton Slagle, he was a farmer and stockman. 

He married Paula Elaine Constant, June 27, 1970 in Stanberry.

Mr. Slagle was a lifetime resident of Stanberry, involved in farming as Slagle & Sons Farms. He was a 1965 graduate of Stanberry High School and attended Metropolitan and Draughns College in Kansas City. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Stanberry, and the Stanberry Lodge 109 A.F.&A.M.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Preston Myrick SIaglel and Donnell Ivan Slagle, of the home; one daughter, Andrea Elaine Slagle, of the home; his mother; one brother, Harper Slagle of Ravenwood; and many aunts and uncles.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Johnson Funeral Home Chapel, Stanberry.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Stanberry, with Pastor Linda K. Jones officiating.

Burial will be in High Ridge Cemetery, Stanberry.

Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church, Stanberry.

Crystal Miller

Crystal Waske Miller, 93, St. Joseph, died Tuesday, July 12,1994 at Heartland East Hospital, St. Joseph.

Born July 11, 1901 in Parnell to Fred and Adeline Miller Waske, she was a teacher for three years in the Parnell area; worked 13 years at Hallmark Cards in Kansas City, where she was an artist, creating pictures for greeting cards; and worked 15 years as a seamstress for Donnelly.

She married Wyatt Miller, in 1940 in St. Joseph.

Ms. Miller was a resident of St. Joseph for the past 54 years. She was a member of the St Francis Xavier Catholic Church, St. Joseph.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one step-son, Wyatt Miller Jr.; three brothers, George Waske, Frank Waske and Louie Waske; and two sisters, Helen Weis and Kate Waske.

Survivors include one step-son, the Fr. Donald Miller, senior priest in residence at St. Gregory's Parish, Maryville; one daughter, Mary Jane
Bennett of St. Joseph; two grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and one step-great-grandson.

Visitation is currently under way at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel.

A Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 10 a.m. Friday, July 15, 1994 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, St. Joseph, with the Rev. Lac Pham. C.PP.S. as celebrant.

Graveside Committal Service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Parnell Cemetery, Parnell.

Memorials may be sent to St Francis Xavier Catholic Church Trust Fund, St. Joseph.

Services for Cleo L. Strauch, 76, Maryville, were held Wednesday, July 13, 1994 at Hope Lutheran Church, Maryville, with the Rev. Ted Mayes officiating.

Mr. Strauch died July 10, 1994 in Kansas City.

Pallbearers were R. C. Ebert, John Schenkel, Richard Strauch, Wayne Gard, Donald Strauch and Kenneth Strauch.

Honorary Pallbearers were E. D. Wiley, Orville Bailey, Douglas Dawson and Forrest Ferguson.

Carolyn Henry was the organist and Jo Mayes was the vocalist.

Burial was in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Westboro.

The Rev. Richard Person also gave a prayer at the cemetery.
