Services for Lloyd E. Babcock, 78, Platte City, were held Monday, Oct. 10, 1994, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Weston.

Mr. Babcock died Oct. 7, 1994 at St. Luke's Hospital-Barry Road Campus, Kansas City.

Born in Tonganoxie, Kan., he moved to Platte County in 1944. He was a farmer and member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Weston.

Survivors include his wife, Isabelle [Hamersky] Babcock, of the home, Platte City; one son, Gerald Babcock of Kansas City; one daughter of Loretta O'Connell of Kansas City; his mother, Leona Babcock of Tonganoxie, Kan.; one brother, Donald Babcock of Kansas City, Kan.; three sisters, Mary Alice Kimberlin of McLouth, Kan., Charlotte Surface of Raytown, Doris Oeischlaeger of Eudora, Kan.; and four grandchildren.

Burial was in Platte City Cemetery, Weston.

Memorials may be made to the Holy Trinity Catholic Church Memorial Fund.

Services were under the direction of Rollins Funeral Home, Platte City.

Charles Cambron Dies

Mr. and Mrs. William Doran of near Maryville have received word of the death of Charles Cambron of Pueblo, Colo., who died last night in a hospital there. He had recently suffered a fractured leg. Mr. Cambron, who was reared in Nodaway County, had lived at Pueblo about fifty years. His wife was the former Miss Elizabeth Allen of Conception.

Funeral arrangements have not been completed.

Graveside Services for Lorene E. Colwell, 80, were held Sept. 24,1994, in Memorial Park Mausoleum, St. Joseph, with Elder Harold E. Bezona officiating.

Ms. Colwell died Sept. 21, 1994, at a local health care center.

Born in Trenton, she owned and operated Colwell’ s and Marti's Beauty School in St. Joseph, with her sister, Lettie L. Uphoff.

She was a graduate of Castor's School of Cosmetology and a past president of the S t. Joseph Unit No. 5 of Cosmetology Association.

Ms. Colwell had resided most of her life in St. Joseph and the last 20 years in Maryville. She attended First Baptist Church of Maryville, and was a member of First Baptist Church, St. Joseph; Parliamentarians of St. Joseph; the Ladies Chamber of Commerce of St. Joseph; and a charter member of the American Business Women's Association.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dennis H. [enry] and Florence L. Campbell Colwell.

Services were under the direction of Meierhoffer-Fleeman Funeral Home, Inc., St. Joseph.

Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church yesterday afternoon for James Monroe Danner, who died Tuesday at his home southwest of Maryville. The pastor, the Rev. James E. Jones, officiated. Burial was in Miriam cemetery.

Raymond Jensen, accompanied by Mrs. Harry Jensen, sang. Mrs. J. W. Hake presided at the organ.

Pallbearers were Jake Shamberger, Denton McGinnis, Claude McKee, George Epperson, Eugene Busby and Earl Riggle.

Flowers were in charge of Mrs. Denton McGinnis, Misses Naomi Marshall, Mary Lou Busby, Joan and Phyllis Hansen and Ruth Alice Coulter.

James Danner Jr.

James M. [onroe] Danner Jr., 74, Maryville, died Monday, Oct. 10, 1994, at Heartland Centre, St. Joseph.

Born May 16,1920, in Maryville, to James M. [onroe], Sr. and Margaret Elizabeth Kill Danner, he was a farmer and had retired from Lloyd Chain, after 20 years of service.

Mr. Danner was a 1938 graduate of College High, Maryville, and attended the University of Tennessee. He served during World War II with the U. S. Army Air Corps. He was of the Christian faith and a former member of the James Edward Gray American Legion Post 100, Maryville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Harry Nicholas Danner; and five sisters, Marie Coulter, Goldie Ashford, Dorothy Huber, Bessie Hansen and Verda Mae Bradshaw.

Survivors include his wife of the home; four sons, James E. Danner of Maryville; Jon W. Danner of St. Louis; Joseph E. Danner of Maryville; and J. Scott Danner of Olathe, Kan.; three daughters, Beverly A. Noellsch of Maitland; Joyce K. Pride of Ravenwood, and Jane D. Morriss of Maitland; one brother, Robert Danner of Maryville; one sister, Mary Margaret Werner of Glen Burnie, Maryland; 12 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at Price Funeral Home Chapel, Maryville.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, at Price Funeral Home Chapel, Maryville, with Allen Cochran officiating.

Burial will be in Prairie Home Cemetery, Graham.

Simon Lynch Dies; to Hold Funeral Saturday

Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon at the Price funeral home for Simon  [Patrick] Lynch [Jr.], 64 years old, who died at 7:50 o’clock this morning at his home at Wilcox. The Rev. G. A. Baldwin will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

He was born December 10, 1880, in Stark county, Ill., and had been in failing health three years. The last three months his condition had become worse. He was married to Blanche Edith Frazee, who died in 1925.

Surviving are one daughter, Miss Ruby May Lynch, of the home, and one brother, Clifford Lynch, Wilcox.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon for Simon [Patrick] Lynch [Jr.] of Wilcox, who died Wednesday. The Rev. Dr. G. A. Baldwin officiated. Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery.

Pallbearers were B. C. Shell, Pearl Shell, John Fink, Lawerence Fink, Ira Munsey and Lee Kenny.

Flowers were in charge of Mrs. William Dempsey, Mrs. Wilbur Lane, Mrs. Minerva Winell, Mr. Frank McKee and Mrs. Lawrence Fink.

John P. McMahon Dies At a St. Joe Hospital

John Patrick (“Dick”) McMahon, 75 years old, a resident of Nodaway county most of his life, died at 11:40 o’clock this morning in a St. Joseph hospital, following an illness of one week.

He was born April 29, 1869, in Illinois, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John McMahon. He was married to Tinnie Claire Byrns, who died February 10, 1937. A member of St. Patrick’s church of Maryville, he had spent most of his life near Maryville.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Eldora Norman and a grandson, Kirby Norman, Maryville; two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Schenkel, Maryville, and Mrs. Kate Carroll, Elwood, Kas., and one brother, William McMahon, Maryville.

Funeral services will be held at 9 o’clock Wednesday morning at St. Patrick’s church with the pastor, the Rev. Fr. R. E. Graham, officiating.

Burial will be in St. Patrick’s cemetery.

Marie E. [llen] Mounts, 74, Kansas City, died Oct. 8, 1994, at her home.

Born June 10,1920, in Bolckow, to Herman S. [ylvanus] and Mamie Thompson Mounts, she had retired after 34 years with Commerce Bank, Kansas City.

Raised in Ravenwood, she was a graduate of Horace Mann High School and attended Northwest Missouri State Teachers College, Maryville.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include one sister, Leola Espey of Maryville; one niece, Karyn Roach of Maryville; and one nephew, Tom Espey of Maryville.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m., today, at Price Funeral Home, Maryville.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, at Price Funeral Home, Maryville, with the Rev. Paul McKim officiating.

Hopkins Cadet Dies In Plane

Albert Owens Rites Are Held Wednesday.

Albert F. [ranklin] Owens, 21, Hopkins, a flying cadet In the U. S. Army stationed at Bakers Field, Calif. died Thursday in a plane crash which also took the life of his instructor, 27-year-old Lt. T. V. Bright of Hope, Ark.

A graduate, of Hopkins High School with the class of 1938, Owens was a star on the famous Hopkins High School cage team of 1937 and 1938. In two weeks he would have been commissioned a second lieutenant in the Air Corps.

The crash occurred shortly before three o-'clock, October 16 as his plane, was flying in routine formation at 5,000 feet. It suddenly nosed down and crashed, nearly burying itself in a field.

The body, accompanied by a sister, Margaret Owens of Roff, Calif., was returned to Hopkins Tuesday evening. Military rites, under the supervision of the Glen Ulmer Post Legion of Hopkins were held Wednesday with the Rev. E. C. Gates officiating.

As a high school memorial to Owens, his gymnasium locker, number 55, has been permanently retired from the "In use" list. Too, his sweater, number 55, will never again be assigned a Hopkins athlete.

Surviving are his widowed mother, two brothers, and four sisters.

Hopkins Boy Killed In Army Plane

Albert Franklin Owens, 21, son of Mrs. Dixie Owens of Hopkins, was killed Thursday when the plane in which he was flying with an army instructor crashed in a cotton field hear Shafter, Calif. He had enlisted in the air corps at Bakersfield, Calif., in June, after completing an elementary flying course at Maryville.

The body was brought to Hopkins where military funeral services were held at the Baptist church Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. E. C. Gates and Rev. Paul Barton, two of the Hopkins ministers. Burial was in the Hopkins cemetery.

He was born Feb. 23, 1920 in Hopkins. He graduated from the Hopkins high school where he was active in basketball, his number being 55. This number has been retired from the lockers of the school as a gesture to the youth who played four years as forward on the Hopkins teams.

Surviving with his mother are two brothers, James Owens of Childersburg, Ala., and Billie Owens of the home; four sisters, Mrs. Kenneth Hopple [Violet Elizabeth] of Atchison, Kans.; Miss Margaret [Louise] Owens of Roff, Calif.; Annice Owens and Agnes Owens of the home. His father and a brother preceded him in death.

Alfred Owens Is Suicide at Hopkins

Alfred [Allen] Owens, 68, for more than forty years a resident of Hopkins, committed suicide Wednesday afternoon.

His body was discovered in his carpenter shop by his son, James. He had taken carbolic acid, the empty bottle being found by his side.

He leaves a wife and several children.

Hopkins Man Is Found A Suicide

Alfred [Allen] Owens, 68, a Hopkins carpenter and a resident of that city for many years, died by his own hand late Wednesday.

The body was discovered by his son, James, who summoned aid. A bottle, said to have contained carbolic acid, was found beside the body.

He is survived by a wife and children.

Bury Alfred Owens In Hopkins Cemetery

Funeral services were held at the Baptist church Friday afternoon for Alfred [Allen] Owens, carpenter and contractor here the past forty-four years. He was found dead in his carpenter shop Wednesday afternoon.

He was sixty-nine years old and was born in Lucas County, Iowa. He is survived by his wife [Dixie Owen], four daughters, Mrs. Kenneth Hopple [Violet Elizabeth] at Atchison, Kans., Agnes, Annice, and Margaret [Louise] Owens, all at home; three sons, Albert [Franklin], James and Billy Owens, at home. Ed Owens of Hopkins is an adopted son. Burial was in the Hopkins cemetery.

Annice Owens

Annice “Nan” Owens, 86, Liberty, formerly of Hopkins, died Sunday, May 15,1994 at Liberty Terrace Care Center, Liberty.

Born May 9, 1908 in Hopkins to Alfred [Allen] and Dixie Owens, she was a telephone operator and child caregiver.

Ms. Owens was a member of the First Baptist Church, Hopkins, and the Order of the Eastern Star, Hopkins Chapter 401.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Charles Owens, Carl Owens, Albert [Franklin] Owens and James Owens; and two sisters, Margaret [Louise] Melvin and Violet [Elizabeth] Hopple.

Survivors include: one brother, Bill Owens, Beverly Hills, Fla.; one sister, Agnes Randall, Liberty; one niece raised by Ms. Owens in her home, Carla Mutti, Gladstone; many nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews.

Services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Hopkins Baptist Church, Hopkins, with the Rev. David Kaster officiating.

Miss Owens' body will lie-in-state at the church from 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Burial will be in Hopkins Cemetery, Hopkins.

Memorials may be made to The First Baptist Church, Hopkins.

Arrangements are under the direction of Price Funeral Home, Maryville.

Wilson Owens

Wilson Owens, 81, Barnard, died Thursday, Oct. 6, 1994, at St. Francis Hospital, Maryville.

He was born Nov. 12, 1912, west of Skidmore, to Dallas Francis and Leera Belle Logan Owens.

Mr. Owens was preceded in death by his parents; and five brothers, Flavel Owens, Everett Owens, Eddie Owens, Fred Owens and Junior Owens.

Survivors include one brother, Ralph Wilbur Owens of Quitman; one sister, Velma Hartman of Barnard; and nieces and nephews.

Visitation is currently under way at Price Funeral Home, Maryville.

Services will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, at Price Funeral Home Chapel, Maryville, with the Rev. Paul McKim officiating.

Burial will be in Miriam Cemetery, Maryville.

Helen C. Saxton Dies; To Hold Rites Wednesday

Miss Helen Claire Saxton, 15-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bert L. Saxton of nine miles southwest of Barnard, died at 1:30 o’clock Sunday afternoon at the St. Francis hospital where she had been a patient three days.

Miss Saxton, who had been ill four weeks, was born June 8, 1929 at Athol, Kas.

Besides her parents, she is survived by five brothers, Bert Saxton, Jr., Farragut, Ia.; Merrill Saxton, Rea, and Richard, Homer Lee and Curtis Dale of the home, and four sisters, Mrs. Blanch McWilliams, Oregon, Mo., and Mildred, Norma and Edna of the home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at the Price funeral home.  The Rev. Dewey I. Meranda, pastor of the First Christian church, will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

Donald Slater

Donald T. [homas] Slater, 77, Templeton, Iowa, died Monday, May 16,1994 at Clarkson Memorial Hospital, Omaha, Neb., following complications from injuries suffered after being thrown from a horse, May 13.

Born May 28, 1916 in Randolph, Iowa, to Bernard [Lawrence] and [Mary] Agnes Smith Slater, he was retired after 44 years of farming and raising livestock in the Templeton area.

He married Geraldine [Rose] Trecker, Nov. 12,1938 in Templeton.

Mr. Slater grew up in the Imogene, Iowa community and moved to Templeton in 1933. He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, Templeton, and a member of the Templeton Knights of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and one sister, Monica Fiala.

Survivors include:  five sons, David Slater, Maryville, Joseph Slater, Bakersfield, Calif., Thomas Slater, Des Moines, Iowa, Steven Slater, Papillion, Neb., and Roger Slater, Coon Rapids, Iowa; three daughters, Peggy Buman, Carroll, Iowa, Sue Badding, Carroll, Iowa, and Melissa Barks, Minneapolis, Minn.; one brother, Bernard Slater, Essex, Iowa; one sister, Martha Maher, Shenandoah, Iowa; special friend, Fay Schliesman, Carroll, Iowa; 24 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.

Friends and relatives may call at Sharp Funeral Home, Carroll, Iowa after 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Rosaries will be recited at 3 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Sharp Funeral Home. The last rosary will be given by Templeton Knights of Columbus.

There will be a Christian Wake Service at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday by Sacred Heart Parish at the funeral home.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 19,1994 at Sacred Heart Church, Templeton. Celebrants will be Fr. Gary Snyder, Fr. Steve Brodersen, Msgr. O. W. Koester and Msgr. A. W. Behrens.

Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Templeton. The Homily will be delivered by Fr. Steve Brodersen. Lector for the Mass will be Gene Langel. Gift Bearers will be Fay Schleisman, Gay Wiskus and Merlin Irlmeier. Mass Servers will be Chris and Matt Danner. Eucharistic Ministers will be Audrey Siepker, Judy Bauer and Dale Schlichte. Ushers will be Carol Schoeppner, Mary Cain and Margaret Murray. Soloist will be Carolyn Miller. Trumpeter will be Nick Stence.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Ed Nepple, LaVern Murray, LeRoy Schultes, Cliff Romey, Allie Prebeck, Vince Langel and Cliff Danner. Casket Bearers will be Jerry Irlbeck, Rich Danner, Tom Danner, Lam Schwaller, Gerald Haubrich and Bob Wiskus.

A memorial fund has been established in Slater's name to benefit the Holy Trinity School Library. Contributions can be made to Holy Trinity School, Templeton, Iowa.

Doris Stoneburner

Doris V. Stoneburner, 79, Versailles, formerly of St. Joseph, died Saturday, May 21,1994 at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Versailles.

Born Jan. 19, 1915 in Nodaway County to Albert H. [arlington] and Cora Ellen Midyett Stoneburner, she was a teacher.

Ms. Stoneburner was a teacher and counselor for 50 years before retiring from Lafayette High School, St. Joseph. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Ravenwood, and a 50-year member of the O.E.S. Rosanna Chapter 262, Maryville.

Survivors include: one sister, Thelma Somerville, Versailles; one great-nephew, Jerry Jerome Somerville, Littleton, Colo; and many other relatives and friends.

Services will be held at 7 p.m. today at Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home, Versailles, with the Rev. Roy Bennett officiating.

Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Oak Lawn Cemetery, Ravenwood.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
