Jessica lived life the only way she knew how: in service to others. From the time she was born as the oldest child of seven, she took on the role of mother hen. When she met her husband Bill at Northwest Missouri State University in 1970 during a hayrack ride, he quickly convinced her that he was the only man for her. It did not take her long to fall in love with Bill, or his 1967 GTO. The courtship was short, and they married on May 27, 1972, in Rockford, Iowa.

Jessica and Bill built their life together in Maryville, Missouri, where she immediately began her philanthropic and volunteer efforts. She was passionate about people and their causes and never said no to someone in need of help. For decades, she loved being an advisor to her beloved sisterhood of the Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority and was known to many of her friends as the Town Crier, an endeavor she utilized to engage others in the community helping those in need. She also enjoyed spending time with her friends playing bridge and Mah Jongg.

Her faith in the Catholic Church was taught to her by her mother and father and passed along to her children. She loved her involvement at St. Gregory’s and was a lector at mass.

He had a diverse and illustrious career in the Air Force. He quickly advanced in rank as an enlisted airman, reaching the grade of Master Sergeant in minimal time. Ron was then selected to receive his commission as an officer, one of the few USAF Master Sergeants to ever earn that honor. While an officer, he was selected by the President of the United States to receive a Regular Commission in the USAF. This is a lifetime appointment, one which all officers strive for but only those selected obtain. He continued to excel, reaching the rank of Lt. Colonel prior to his decision years later to retire. Ron’s many accomplishments include being named the Strategic Air Command Missile Combat Crew officer of the Month for actions he took to prevent the loss of an ICBM facility during an emergency situation. He retired from active duty with the Air Force in 2004 after having served with honor and distinction for over 37 years.
Following Ron’s retirement from active duty with the USAF, he was a systems engineer with various defense contracting firms, using his vast knowledge to help the Department of Defense with the development and maintenance of critical defense systems. Ron was a student of history, an outstanding technician, and an academic scholar, having earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Technologies from Southern Illinois University, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of South Dakota. After 9 years of teaching, Mick found his true calling of selling cars after dealing with, and later working for the local car dealership and Harvey Larsen at Larsen Ford Mercury in Exira. He worked there for almost 30 years, forming lifelong friendships with coworkers and clients until retiring from and closing the business in 2005. Over the years Mick dealt with thousands of people, creating a network of friends and fellow car enthusiasts nationwide. Mick’s buying and selling was not just a job, it was his hobby as well. Buying and selling countless vehicles throughout the years, he was a collector of classic Ford cars and trucks, as well as motorcycles and John Deere tractors. Mick loved working outside and enjoyed nature, especially trees. The Quitman farm was a lifetime labor of love for him, and remains in the family to this day.
Mick was a beloved father and role model for his children, the late Stacy Lynn, born in December of 1969, and Zachary Michael, born in October of 1973. He is survived by his immediate family; Judy Claire (LaMar) Thompson of Exira, Iowa; his son Zachary (Kelli) Thompson, their two daughters, Caroline and Eliza all of Austin, Texas; his step grandchildren Matthew Hofmeyer and Katelyn Jepsen both of Pocahontas, Iowa; his brothers, Nolan Bruce (Sue) Thompson of Burlington Junction, Missouri, and Aaron Lundia (Sylvia) Thompson of Marion, Iowa; nieces, nephews, many cousins, and friends. Mick was a hard worker and never quit until the job was done. This was true in his fight against IPF as well, remaining hopeful and maintaining his determination to see his grandchildren grow up to the very end. Although he will be sorely missed by those that were close to him, he can now peacefully reminisce and laugh with Stacy about all the simple, special details that only a family household that lives a lifetime together can know.
The family will meet with friends Thursday evening January 3, 2019, at 5:00 p.m. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira, Iowa.
