Miller, Richard Eldon "Tiny"

On June 13, 1935 Richard (Tiny) Eldon Miller was born to Benjamin Roy Miller and Edith Marie Gray Miller. He was the youngest of 4 children. His older sister, Dorotha, who dearly wanted a girl objected "just another pair of pants to iron". When he was only a boy of 11, after eying a Ford he wanted to buy, Albert Mutti gave him a job in order for him to earn the money to buy the vehicle. After learning how to drive from his brother-in-law, Ralph Wood, at 12 years of age he was delivering 100 lb gas cylinders in rural Hopkins. During high school Tiny helped build Rosecrans, the Chevy dealership in Hopkins. He graduated a Hopkins Bulldog in 1953.

After graduation he began to work at Rosecrans full time. He was a very dedicated worker, enjoyed working on cars, and loved the customers of Rosecrans. Tiny had numerous stories about his tow truck calls, from pulling the same car out of a pond several times to even pulling a cow out of a cistern. To the end, he always had a story of a particular car Rosecrans had sold or worked on, and who the customer was. Tiny loved to work on a car in order for it to perform to its peak; he would mechanic a Chevy any day. After 35 dedicated years to Rosecrans, upon their closing, he moved 6 blocks down the street to the second job of his lifetime. He worked for 22 years at the JL Houston Co. until his retirement in 2011.

Tiny loved cars, buying his first car, a Ford Victoria, before he was old enough to drive, from Albert Mutti. He bought, worked on, and traded many cars for his personal use and enjoyment. He owned a 55 Chevy Belair that he drove to Bedford every weekend... just to make sure he could still make it in 5 minutes. Tiny and his best friend during his bachelor years, Wilbur Noakes, built a 1951 orange Chevy pickup out of 2 trucks. He drove the truck for many years and many of you may have seen him driving it around town as it was his every day ride.

A sister of Tiny's friend wanted a motorcycle ride. A simple motorcycle ride turned into so much more. After 57 years of being a bachelor, Tiny met the love of his life. He did not want to get any older before he married. So on June 12th 1993, the day before his birthday, he was united in marriage to Barbara Ann Young Green. On that day he not only received a wife, but also three kids, 5 grandchildren and an ole brown dog named Bear. He loved the kids and the grandkids like they were his own; he was very proud of them. They were the love of his life, and he enjoyed every moment he spent with his family.

Tiny was very dedicated to Hopkins and impacted many people during his lifetime. He served in the Hopkins Lions Club since 1973, spending many of those years as an officer. He served on the local volunteer Hopkins fire department all of his adult life, acting as chief for over 30 years. Tiny loved riding motorcycles and was a member of the 102 Valley Motorcycle club for 15 years. He didn't need much of an excuse to take a ride on Thumper, his trusty 500 Yokohama. Tiny enjoyed his many hours on the road, "Riding his own ride." Tiny lived 79 years... all living at the same residence of 108 South 5th St. He will be missed by many and was loved my all.

Preceding him in death were: his parents; brother: Galen (Celia) Miller; brother-in-law: Ralph Wood and sister-in-law: Betty Jean Miller.

Survivors include his wife: Barbara Miller, of their home in Hopkins; children: David Green and fiancé: Danielle Miller, Grant City, MO; Martha McCartney and fiancé: Terry Skelly, Tarkio, MO; Tyril “Ty” (Christy) Green, Bedford, Ia; sister: Dorotha Wood, Hopkins; brother: Donald Miller, Hollister, MO; grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Justin (Charlotte) Green, Kelly (Travis) Julia and Aisley Wiederholt; Lacie Groom and fiancé: Michael Manion; McKenzie (Aaron) and Briella Benson; Taylor and Shelby McCartney; Wyatt, Garrett, Faith, AllyLynn and Oakley Green; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
