Archer, Dorothy Veronica Wiederholt - Dorothy Veronica (Wiederholt) Archer, 88, of Conception, MO, died April 29, 2014, at Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, MO. She was born in Clyde, MO, on March 11, 1926, to Frank and Elizabeth (Miller) Wiederholt. After attending school, she worked in St. Joseph packaging war supplies for the troops during World War II.

Dorothy married Hubert Archer on May 7, 1946, in Conception. She and Hubert raised eight children on a farm near Conception. Being a farmer’s wife and a mother were the joys of Dorothy’s life. After her children were grown, she truly loved spending time with her grandchildren and, later, her great-grandchildren. She also found much happiness in working in her garden and surrounding her home with flowers, as well as sewing and making scrapbooks for her grandchildren. Dancing with her husband, traveling with family and friends, and playing cards were among her favorite hobbies.

As a devoted member of St. Columba Parish in Conception Jct., MO, Dorothy served as a communion minister for many years, served on the church’s first parish council, and was a member and past president of St. Ann’s Altar Society. She could often be found giving communion to and visiting with residents of nursing homes and was honored with an award for serving 20 years as a Hospice volunteer for St. Francis Hospital in Maryville, MO. Dorothy also enjoyed attending community and sporting events. Indeed, at the 1997 state basketball tournament, Dorothy received the “best fan” award for Jefferson C-123 High School, the school from which all of her children and several of her grandchildren graduated. In addition, Dorothy was an Oblate at the Conception Abbey and volunteered in the gift shop at The Abbey Guest Center.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 45 years, Hubert Archer; son Marvin Archer; grandson Mitchell Strueby; brothers Benedict Wiederholt, Joseph Wiederholt, Vincent Wiederholt, and Robert Wiederholt; and sisters Ann Lager and Agnes Wiederholt.

She is survived by her children: Jim (Cindy) Archer, Little Elm, TX; Jerry (Vicki) Archer, King City, MO; Marilyn Jean Alstrom, Kansas City, KS; Steve (Nancy) Archer, Conception Jct.; Bill Archer, Conception Jct.; Mike (Karen) Archer, Conception Jct.; and Sharon (Randy) Strueby, Guilford, MO. Other survivors include her daughter-in-law Sharon (Marvin Archer) and Jim Adwell, Maryville; grandchildren Ryan Archer, Jessica Archer, Melissa Archer, Andrew Archer, Todd Archer, Kim Kato, Chris Archer, Natalie Atkins, Lyndsey Walters, Tim Alstrom, Brian Archer, Kellen Archer, Katharine Archer, Brad Archer, Jeff Archer, Kelly Quinlin, Craig Archer, Dallas Archer, Lisa Wells, Kevin Archer, Staci Wolfe, Doug Archer, Dana Strueby, and Mark Strueby; 23 great-grandchildren with one on the way; sisters-in-law Elizabeth (Benedict) Wiederholt, Phyllis (Robert) Wiederholt, Mary (Dutch) Luke, Patricia (Donald) Archer, and Joanne (Thomas Archer) Cordell; and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held at St. Columba Catholic Church in Conception Jct., at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, with the rosary beginning at 5:00 p.m. and visitation taking place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The funeral will be held at St. Columba Catholic Church on Friday, May 2, at 10:00 a.m., with the burial immediately following.

Beggs, Wanda Mae Paxton - Wanda Mae Beggs, 90, Maryville, Missouri passed away May 29, 2014 at Parkdale Manor, Maryville.

Wanda was born September 20, 1923, at Parnell, Missouri to Walter and Velma (Dunn) Paxton. She married Quinton Beggs on May 17, 1941, who preceded her in death in 1999.

In addition to Quinton, Wanda was preceded in death by her parents; sisters: Lois Morene Sewell, Darleen Kathryn Jacks and Audrey Ann Thornton and son-in-law: Dennis Fetters.

She is survived by her children: Sue Fetters, Carlisle, Iowa; Don Beggs, Kansas City, Missouri; John Beggs and Patricia Stiens, Maryville. She had nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many friends.

She was formerly employed by Northwest Missouri State University. She was a member of the First Christian Church and Past President of Mary Martha Circle, Maryville.

Wanda enjoyed listening to music, flower gardening and working crossword puzzles, but her greatest joy was spending time with her family. She was an accomplished baker and won first prize for her carrot cake.

John was born October 17, 1924 in Maryville, the son of John F and Gertrude (Lahr) Busby. After High School he joined the US Army serving during World War II. On October 4, 1947 John married Catherine Spire in Parnell.

A lifelong farmer, he was a member of St Joseph’s Catholic Parish, and a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre and the Curry Richardson Sparks Waldeier American Legion Post # 528, all of Parnell. He was a former member and past president of the Nodaway County REC (Rural Electric Co-op)

John was preceded in death by his wife: Catherine on March 9, 2010; his parents; and a sister: Barbara Busby.

Carmichael, Dwayne Oren - Dwayne Oren Carmichael, 84, Maryville, Missouri, died Monday, July 7, 2014, at Golden Living Center, Maryville, Missouri.

Dwayne was born July 7, 1930, in Maryville, to Raymond S. and Mabel Irene (Mann) Carmichael.

A 1949 graduate of Pickering High School, Dwayne served his country with the United States Army during the Korean War. He retired after 27 years as a Prudential Insurance Agent.

On November 16, 2001, he married Juanita Noland Sanders in Maryville.

Dwayne was a member of the Countryside Christian Church and James Edward Gray American Legion Post #100, Maryville.

He was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Kenya Burns.

Survivors include his wife of the home, Juanita (Noland) Sanders Carmichael; sons: Bruce W. (LeAnne) Carmichael and Kim Z. (Terri) Carmichael, both of Maryville and daughter Vicki C. Hazle (Hazel) Chapman Coffelt was born on October 10, 1923 the first of twins to Thomas Henry Chapman and Sarah Florence McCrery-Chapman in Gentry County, Missouri and died April 24, 2014 in Maryville, MO.

She attended Bible College in St Paul, MN until she was requested to return home to help take care of her ailing father. She completed her GED and then in 1979, along with her daughter Rhoda, she was graduated from Gateway Technical High School in Kenosha, WI. She was chosen by the graduating class to give the commencement speech.

She moved numerous times during her married life, having lived in Maryville, MO; Ravenwood, MO; Racine, WI; Kenosha, WI; McFall, MO; and Albany, MO.   She held numerous jobs during her lifetime, as well as being a mother of four. Her first job was plucking chickens at a factory in Stanberry, MO. She also worked as a waitress, a Nurse’s Aide, assisted her sister in the laundry business, and worked on their farm. She enjoyed drawing blueprints for homes that her husband built as well as sewing. Over the years she made numerous pieces of clothing for herself and her children. She also loved quilting and reading (she completed over 50 quilts for her family).            

She is survived by Harold, her husband of 67 yrs. She is also survived by her children, Twila Ellis, Carol (Gordon) Segal, Randy (Linda) Coffelt and Rhoda (Paul) Brady, grandchildren Carlene Pierson, Jennifer Ellis, Joy Segal, Matthew (Bonnie) Ellis, Jamie (Sean) Cummings, Randall Coffelt Jr, Stephanie (Chad) Dragoo, Samuel Bell, Patrick Brady and Kevin Brady. She also leaves great-grandchildren Alexandra Butts, Austin Butts, Tyler Cooper, Christopher Segal, Dustin Ellis, Mikeala McCoy, Destiny Dragoo, Darin Ellis, Courtney Segal, Ethan Brown, Brennan Dragoo, Noah Pierson, Livia Segal, Mason Cummings, Caiden Segal, Owen Cummings and Jackson Segal.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Henry Chapman and Sarah Florence McCrery-Chapman and all of her nine siblings and their spouses: Rebecca Chapman, Thomas Henry Chapman, Nora (LB) Walker, Etta Belle (Floyd) Bettis, William Henry (Doris) Chapman, Iva Chapman, Willis Francis Chapman, her twin Gazel (Earl) Noble and Mary Florence (Percy) Peters. A granddaughter, Carla Ellis and grandson, Jeremy Segal also predeceased her.

Doris Marie (Stephens) Collins, 94, went on angels wings to her eternal life on Thursday, May 8, 2014, in Kansas City, MO.

She was born on February 3, 1920, to Frederick, Sr., and Edna (Smith) Stephens in Boise, ID.

Doris was a long time member of the Bethany Christian Church. She always loved being a part of the church and all activities pertaining to it.

On February 3, 1937, she married Richard H. Collins and together they farmed in Andrew and Nodaway Counties for more than 60 years. For about 25 of the 60 years they also operated a Grade A Dairy.

Semi-retiring in 1998, they moved to Savannah, MO, while still maintaining 50 acres and cattle.

In 2011, she moved to Kansas City, MO, to live with her daughter Linda and son in law, Charles. Due to the progression of Parkinson’s disease, she had to move into Golden Living Center in Smithville, MO, in 2013, and finally to The Nesting Place in Gladstone, MO.

Her beloved husband, Richard Collins (Dick), of 69 years went to be with his Lord in 2006, and their only son, Lawrence (Larry) went into the arms of the Lord in 2012. Also preceding her in death were her parents; 3 brothers: Ellis, Richard and Frederick, Jr., Stephens; and 3 sisters: Betty King, Mary Drydale, and Esther Pearson.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda Kay McKown and husband Charles, of Kansas City, MO; daughter in law, Donna Collins, of Kansas City, KS; 6 grandchildren, Randy (Cassie), Richard (Charlene), Dana and Lari Collins, and Joe (Amy) and Brett (Shannon) McKown; 6 great grandchildren; 2 sister in laws: Arletta and Pauline Stephens, and 2 brother in laws: Wayne Drydale, and Wayne Pearson; and many nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.

The family would like to thank all the people that helped with Doris’s care, including Dr. James Day, Caring Nurses, Crossroads Hospice, Golden Living Center at Smithville, MO., and Kathy and Lawson Byrd of The Nesting Place in Gladstone, MO. Without their help we could not have made the last months of Doris’s life as comfortable as it was.

JoAnn was born November 22, 1931, in Maryville, Missouri to William Edward and Laura Louise (Thompson) Wilmes.

A 1949 graduate of Maryville High School, JoAnn was a homemaker.

She first married Thomas John Archer, February 11, 1953 in Maryville, who died November 28, 1992. She married John Harold Cordell, July 8, 1995, who preceded her in death April 14, 2001.

JoAnn was a member of the St Gregory Catholic Church, Maryville.

Others preceding her in death: were her brother Jim Wilmes and sister Mercedes Spire and grandchildren Kaile Archer and Brad Liechti.

Cordell, Mary Alice Lundy - Mary Alice Lundy Cordell, 83, Maryville, formerly of Indianola, IA and Taylor County, IA, died Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at her home.

She was born June 5, 1930, east of Sidney, IA to Earl Cecil Lundy and Elsie Jane Cook Lundy. She married Forrest Robert Cordell at the First United Methodist Church, Maryville.

She earned her teaching certificate from Simpson College, Indianola, IA and taught at rural Iowa schools. She retired from the State of Iowa.

She was active in the Red Hat Society, Nodaway County Senior Center and volunteered at Parkdale Manor.

She is preceded in death by her parents; older siblings, Ora Ann Davis, William Hoyt Lundy, Velma June Boyd and Ava Mae Vohs; two grandsons, Caleb David Luke Stille and Trad Leroy Stille.

Corken, William H. - William H. Corken, the son of Hubert Stanley and Orpha Joyce (Farris) Corken was born September 10, 1931, in Maryville, Missouri. Bill graduated from Burlington Junction High School in 1949. Bill then attended Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville, graduating in 1953. He then attended the University of Colorado, Boulder and the University of Wisconsin, Madison, graduating from the School of Banking.

On June 5, 1954, Bill was united in marriage to Jean Long at the Maryville United Methodist Church. They became the parents of two children, Craig and Laura and made their home in Rock Port, Missouri, from 1954 to 1998.

Bill taught school in Rock Port from 1954 to 1956, and in that year was employed by the Citizens Bank, Rock Port, where he worked for fourteen months. In May of 1957, Bill was employed by the Bank of Atchison County, also in Rock Port. During the 1970’s he was able to acquire an ownership interest in the bank, and served actively until his retirement in 1992. Bill passed away Sunday, April 27, 2014, at Village House Hospice, Lee’s Summit, Missouri, at the age of 82.

Bill was a former member of the Rock Port United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir from 1954 to 1998. He was the former chairman of the Community Hospital Board, Fairfax, Missouri, during its expansion in 1981, a member of the Rock Port Rotary Club from 1956 to 1992. Bill was instrumental in the organization of Missouri Beef Packers, west of Rock Port, a project that funneled thousands of jobs and millions of dollars into the area. Bill was an avid golfer and supporter of the Rock Port Country Club and enjoyed singing in various Barber Shop Quartets and Choruses. Bill was a current member of Woods Chapel, United Methodist Church, Lee’s Summit.

Besides his parents Bill was preceded in death by grandson, Ben Bond; brothers and their wives, James (Gwen) Corken and Jack (Margaret) Corken; and sister-in-law, Eleanor Corken. Survivors include his wife, Jean, Lee’s Summit; son, Craig Corken and his wife, Lisa, Rock Port; daughter, Laura Bond, and her husband, Sonne, Olathe, Kansas; grandchildren, Trent Corken, and his wife, Beth, Lincoln, Nebraska, Erica Barnes and her husband, Dustin, Fairfax, Missouri, Kaitlea Corken and fiancé, Ross Hastert, Rock Port, Joe Stricklin, Kansas City, Missouri, Krista Seelbach, Henderson, Texas, Carrie Bond, Rapid City, South Dakota, Jack Bond and Shannon Bond, Olathe, Kansas; great-granddaughter, Stella Bond, Rapid City; brother, Jerry Corken, Fort Worth, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Marilyn was born June 16, 1941, to Raymond and Elenora (Adwell) Slagle.

She grew up in Ravenwood, Missouri and graduated from Maryville High School in 1959. Marilyn and Roland David were married August 29, 1958, in Ravenwood.

An active member of the Maryville First United Methodist Church, Marilyn loved people and enjoyed visiting with her many wonderful friends. She worked as a receptionist for 25 years until her retirement in 2002 from St. Francis Family Health Care.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, stepmother Garland, grandparents and dear mother-in-law Trula Nelle.

Marilyn is survived by her husband Roland; son Scott David; granddaughter Shaina, both of Biloxi Mississippi; daughter Traci David (Janice); grandsons Chase (Brianna), Spencer (Julia) and Ryan; and great-grandchildren Skyler and Lochlen, all of Salt Lake City, Utah; brothers; Marlin (Sharon) Slagle, Maryville; Kerry (Ellen) Slagle, Sarasota, Florida and Lavain (Delores) Slagle, Des Moines, Iowa; and step-sister Sherry (David) Milligan, St. Joseph, Missouri.

A 1956 graduate of Quitman High School, Gene was a farmer.

He married Patty Sue Allen on June 24, 1956, in Maryville, MO. They later divorced.

Gene was a member of the Quitman Methodist Church.

Preceding him in death was brother Doyle Isaac Day, son-in-law Vincent Harper, and grandaughter Bobbie Jo Stinnett.

Dowling, Gary N. - Gary N. Dowling, 75, of Mission, TX, and formerly of the Maryville and Skidmore, MO, area, passed away on Monday, June 9, 2014, at his home in Mission, where he had lived the past several years.

Gary was born near Maryville, MO, on May 1, 1939, to Eugene and Mildred (Ulmer) Dowling. They preceded him in death. He was also preceded by his sister, Ronda Salsbury; son in law, Carey Barr; grandson, Rob Lowrance; and sister in law, Barb Dowling.

Gary farmed west of Maryville most all his life. After selling his farm, he worked at Energizer in Maryville, MO, for several years. He was a member and enjoyed his friends at the Maryville Elks Lodge #760; he was a member of the Town and Country Saddle Club at Skidmore, MO. He was also a former mason with the Skidmore Masonic Lodge #511, Skidmore, MO. He was of the Christian faith and had attended the Skidmore Methodist Church.. Gary married Marilyn Lou Friend in 1959, they later divorced.

Dorothy was born September 26, 1920, in Clearmont, Missouri to Ross Milton and Lela Marie (Masters) Burch.

She married Arthur Ebert August 13, 1981, in Maryville.

Dorothy had worked in Food Service at Northwest Missouri State University and also operated Dots Pet Shop.
Dorothy was the last surviving charter member of the Hope Lutheran Church, Maryville.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Arthur Ebert (November 2, 1999), Son Larry Gladfelder and Sister Emma Herrington.

Survivors include Five grandchildren, Ten great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

Findley, Garland Edward - Garland Edward Findley, 89, Sheridan, Missouri, died Friday, May 30, 2014, at Parkdale Manor in Maryville.

Edward was born April 21, 1925, in Worth, Missouri to Charles Thomas and Esther May McDonald Findley.

He married Margaret Pratt Findley August 21, 1950, in Maryville,. He was of the Baptist faith and a lifetime farmer.

Preceding Edward in death were his parents, brother Donald Findley and sister Anna Lea Howes.

He was survived by his wife Margaret Findley of the home in Maryville; son Ralph (Judy) Findley, Unionville, Missouri; daughters: Rosa Lea Lancey, Savannah, Missouri and Garland (Paul) George, Maryville; brother Russell (Marilyn) Findley, Gladstone, Missouri; sister Linda (Tony) Musick, Denton, Montana, numerous grand, great-grand and great-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Visitation is 10:00-11:00 am, Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at Price Funeral Home, Maryville, and will be followed by the Funeral Service at 11:00 AM, also at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Nodaway Memorial Gardens, Maryville.

Richard Raymond “Dick” Flanagan, 84, of Maryville, MO, passed away on Thursday, June 19, 2014. He was surrounded by family and friends during his last days, after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 AM, Monday, June 23, 2014, at the St. Gregory’s Catholic Church, Maryville, MO. The burial will follow at the St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Full military honors will be by the US Navy Burial Detail, and members of the James Edward Gray, American Legion Post 100.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM Sunday, June 22, 2014, at the Bram-Danfelt Funeral Home. At 7:30 PM, a Parish Rosary will be recited, and a sharing time will follow.

Richard was born on February 11, 1930, and was the 11th of 12 children born to McDonald (Mac) and Nancy Flanagan in Fairfax, MO. He remained in the northwest Missouri area throughout his life except during his 4 years serving his country in the US Navy during the Korean War.

Richard was known for his athletic career. He played football at NWMSU and remained a loyal Bearcat until the end. He coached at King City, MO, Savannah, MO, and then returned to his alma mater, NWMSU, to coach and later became the Athletic Director. He received many awards, but the two that meant the most to him were being inducted into the NWMSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996, and into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2011.

As a member of the Elks Club, Host Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion Post, he was actively involved in community service and always willing to give a helping hand to those in need. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his son, Richard Raymond Flanagan, Jr.

Survivors include one sister, Dott Lawrence, of Rockport, MO; 4 children, Maureen Flanagan, Michael Flanagan and wife Heather, Shawna Lubarsky and husband Amir, Amy Dorland and husband Lonnie, Independence, MO; six grandchildren; and special friend Coralea Samson.

Foster, Virginia Mutz - Virginia Mutz Foster, age 97, of Maryville and Kansas City Missouri, passed peacefully Thursday May 8th at her home in Bishop Spencer Place in Kansas City.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Harrison Hall Mutz and LaRue Kemp Mutz of Maryville, Missouri; brothers, Harrison Hall Mutz and Austin Kemp Mutz; and her beloved husband of nearly 60 years, Dr. Robert Porter Foster, Jr., former President of Northwest Missouri State University.

Survivors include her family of whom she was so very proud: her two sons, Robert Porter Foster III and his wife Doris Wielandt Foster of Bern, Switzerland; Douglas Kemp Foster and his wife Lisa Tresnicky Foster, of Grapevine, Texas. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren Bryan Marcus, Lora Ann and Sybil Ann Foster all of Switzerland and Avery Ann and Douglas Grant Foster of Texas.

Virginia was a graduate of Maryville High School, attended Christian College (now Columbia College) in Columbia, Missouri where she earned the associate of arts degree. She graduated from the University of Missouri, Columbia in 1939 with a bachelor of science in education.

Prior to her marriage, Virginia taught in the elementary schools in Carrollton Missouri from 1940 to 1942 and in Clarinda Iowa during the 1942-43 school year.

After marriage, her public service continued, first in supporting her husband, then Ensign Robert Foster, US Navy, in helping ready his ship for service in the North Atlantic during World War II. She then served not only as a dedicated wife and mother, but eventually as first lady of Northwest Missouri State University. She supported the university community in that capacity for 13 years. After retirement, the Fosters lived in Maryville, Missouri and eventually, at Bishop Spencer Place in Kansas City where they continued to support both their community and the university.

Virginia’s involvement in her community also included P.E.O., the United Methodist Church, Northwest Missouri State University’s Faculty Dames, and as a Patroness for Sigma Sigma Sigma social sorority.

Memorial services celebrating her life of service will be Saturday May 31st, at 11AM at the First United Methodist Church in Maryville and Monday June 2nd at 10:30AM at the Chapel at Bishop Spencer Place in Kansas City.

Following the memorial service in Maryville will be the dedication of the Robert and Virginia Foster Fitness Center at 2:30PM on the Campus of Northwest Missouri State University. Immediately following will be a reception at the Gaunt House, the Northwest Missouri State University President’s residence.

Freemyer, Thelma Loraine Roush - Thelma Loraine Freemyer, 84, of Ravenwood, MO, passed from this life on Saturday, May 24, 2014, at the Pineview Manor Nursing Home, in Stanberry, MO.

Loraine was born on April 17, 1930, in Hopkins, MO, to Lester and Ruby (Riley) Roush. They preceded her in death. She was also preceded by her infant son, Loren; and her sister, Laberta (survived by Marvin) Palmer.

Loraine lived all her life in Northwest Missouri. She received her teacher certificate from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, and taught country school for 2 years. She was also a house wife and helped her husband on the farm.

Loraine loved her church and was a member and attended the Ravenwood Christian Church. She enjoyed teaching Vacation Bible School at the Skidmore Christian Church, and later at Ravenwood Christian Church.

On November 22, 1950, at the Christian Church Parsonage in Shambaugh, IA, Loraine was united in marriage to Russell A. Freemyer, he survives of the home in Ravenwood.

Her other survivors include her children, Russalene (Bill) Koch, Ravenwood, MO, Melleen (DeWayne) Baldwin, Stanberry, MO, and Jared (Kim) Freemyer, Ravenwood; her siblings, Harold (Marie) Roush, Louisville, KY, Vervil (Rosemary, deceased) Roush, Overland Park, KS, Charles (Barbara) Roush, Hopkins, MO, Lester, Jr., (Marjorie) Roush, Pickering, MO, Edwin (Donna) Roush, Maryville, Jerry (Fern) Roush, Hopkins, Leon (Carolyn) Roush, and Deon (Jodee) Roush, both of Maryville; 9 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funston, Gwendolen Lane - Gwendolen Funston, of Trenton, Michigan, died May 20, 2014, at Parkdale Manor, in Maryville, Missouri.

Gwen was born November 6, 1917, in Stamford, Nebraska, the daughter of Lila and Glen Lane, of Phillipsburg, Kansas.

Gwen was a graduate of Fort Hays State University. She and Robert Funston were married in 1938, and they continued their education, Gwen earning an MA in English; Robert received an MS in Chemistry in l941.

Following graduation, Gwen and Robert moved to Michigan with their young daughter, Erith Elane. Chanda Diane was born to Gwen and Robert in l942.

Gwen taught English both at Woodrow Wilson, Jr. High and Roosevelt High School, in Wyandotte. Robert was Chief Chemist for Wyandotte Chemicals, later bought by BASF.

Gwen was actively involved in teaching Great Books, World Literature Classes, and led Poets and Playwrights, a downriver writing group. In 2003, Gwen won the Downriver Artist of the Year and was honored for her readings and poetry publications.

In 2004, Gwen and her daughter Erith moved to Council Grove, Kansas where Gwen, again, led a writing group. Three years later, Gwen and Erith moved to Topeka, and Gwen participated in the Topeka Writers’ Group.

Gwen is best known not only for her red hair, but for her joy in writing and travel. She and her husband Robert visited England (several times), Ireland, Scotland, France, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Africa, Russia, and China.

Gwen was an inspiration to many prospective writers because she taught with enthusiasm and humor. Her own poetry ranged from the whimsical, involving frogs, fairies, and stars, to deeper reflections on love, life, grieving, and death. Here's a poem addressed to her husband.

"I see beyond To a hallowed place Where Love reigns supreme, And your dear face Smiles upon me Through storm and strife Pain and death I come to thee, Beloved". GBF

She is survived by Chanda Diane Funston (daughter), retired Associate Professor of English at Northwest Missouri State University, Ardith Renee Woertz (granddaughter), Attorney at Law, in Topeka Kansas, and Eric Glen Smith (grandson),Supervisor of Structural Tests at Cessna, in Wichita, Kansas. Gwen had seven grandchildren.

Mary Louise Gilbert, 86, Tipton, Indiana, died Thursday, March 20, 2014, at Miller's Merry Manor, Tipton, Indiana.

Mary was born December 6, 1927, in Clyde, Missouri to William D. and Agnes (McCann) Doran. On June 23, 1951, Mary married Dr. Arthur Gilbert in Maryville, Missouri, who preceded her in death April 10, 2001.

A graduate of University of Nebraska, she was a homemaker and Master Gardener.

Mary was a member of the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church Tipton, Indiana.

Preceding in death were her parents, husband, and daughter Jane Gilbert (December 8, 1975), and three brothers, William B.Doran, Jr., Marvin R. Doran, and Eugene R. Doran.

Goudge, Fred - Fred Goudge passed away June 3, 2014. He was born June 8, 1925 in Ukiah, California to Cyril M. and Lois (Tull) Goudge.

Fred had an early interest in and liked to share his knowledge of agriculture with others growing up in the rural community of Redwood Valley, California. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943 and served as a radio operator on a B24 Liberator bomber.

He met the love of his life, Rogene Goldammer, at a USO dance at the Army Air Force Base in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1945. They were married three months later when WWII ended, celebrating their 68th wedding anniversary in 2013. He also served in the Naval Air Reserve while attending the University of Nebraska. He was a proud Nebraska alum. He taught Vocational Agriculture for over 35 years in Nebraska and Iowa.
During his retirement years he and Rogene traveled extensively and spent 7 summers working at Yellowstone National Park.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lois and Cyril Goudge and sisters-in-law Dodie Goudge and Patricia Goudge.

He is survived by his wife and lifelong companion, Rogene, son Darrell Goudge, Edmond, OK, son Derek Goudge, Honolulu, HI, daughter Lynette Dalton (Jim) Fort Dodge, IA, and son Ted Goudge (Beth), Maryville, MO, Brothers Don and Jim Goudge, San Antonio, TX, and sister Jeannie Snow (Leon), Pasco, Washington. Laverne was born May 17, 1929, in Worth County Missouri to Samuel Pearl and Sarah (Bosley) Griffey. He married Freda Verlene Conz, June 28, 1953, in Parnell, Missouri.

Laverne retired as a tree foreman with St. Joseph Light and Power, Maryville.

Laverne was a member of the Laura Street Baptist Church, Levis and Laces Square Dance Club and Tanglefoot Square Dance Club. Laverne enjoyed camping and visiting with people at the campsites.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Lee, Lavelle, and Lawrence Griffey.

Henry, Sarah Ann Wilson - Sarah Ann Henry, 74, Maitland, Missouri, died Monday, April 28, 2014, at Heartland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph, Missouri.

Sarah was born December 6, 1939, in Hastings, Iowa to Loren J and Esta Gertrude (Hagloch) Wilson.

A 1957 graduate of Maryville, Missouri High School, she was an Elementary School Cook for 17 years with the Nodaway Holt School District. Sarah and Clifford Romaine Henry were married February 14, 1960, in Maryville. She was a member of the Clearmont, Missouri Baptist Church.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Romaine (3/19/2012); son Richard Allen Henry and sister Loraine Smith.

She is survived by three sons: Randy (Brenda) Henry, Kansas City, MO; Rob Henry, Washington, DC; David (Michael) Henry-Duffy, San Diego, CA; three daughters: Lisa (Terry) Hardy, Marshfield, MO; Angela Henry, Chicago, IL and Linda (Ron) Ryan, Verona, NY; twelve grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and sister-in-law Sue BreDahl, Skidmore, MO.

Hinton, Herbert D. - Herbert D. Hinton, age 87, passed away May 7, 2014 at Slater, Missouri. .

Born August 4, 1926 to Helen and Harold Hinton at St. Francis Hospital, Maryville, Missouri, he attended Pickering High School and graduated in 1944.

He served with the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific and Mainland China and was Honorably discharged in October 1946. Mr. Hinton attended Northwest Missouri State Teacher's College and graduated in 1951. He lived 10 years in Casper, Wyoming and moved back to Missouri in 1961.

On March 26, 1962 he married Patricia M. Grahl in Auburn, Nebraska and was self-employed as owner and operator of Hinton Construction for 23 years, retiring in 1985.

Other surviving family members include a daughter, Robin DeAnn Hinton Cox, Marshall, Missouri and a son, Curtis O. Hinton, Overland Park, Kansas; two grandchildren: Rebekka DeAnn and Matthew William Cox , both of Marshall and a sister: Patricia Ann Ozoril, Reno, Nevada.

Jabusch, James Robert "Jim" - James Robert Jabusch (Jim), of Maryville, MO, passed away on May 22, 2014, at the Village Care Center, Maryville.

Jim was born on August 16, 1949, in Nodaway County, MO, to Robert Bruce Jabusch, and Mary Ella (Rowlett) Jabusch Veylupek. He went to grade school in Maryville and graduated from the Union Star Missouri high School.

Jim enlisted in the US Air Force in 1969. He served in Vietnam and Indo China where he was as a Morse Intercept Operator. He was honorably discharged in 1974.

Jim worked for Burlington Northern Railroad for 12 years as a switchman/brakeman in Fort Worth, TX. Later he attended Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville.

Jim always loved horses. He raised and been involved with them his whole life and always helped others with his vast knowledge. He had done barrel racing in high school, and participated in the pleasure class at many horse shows.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his 4 sisters, and 1 brother: Juanita Brand, Savannah, MO, Linda Blackford, Maryville, JoAnna (Don) Pankau, Pickering, MO, Janice (Denny) Meeks, Lander, WY, and Richard (Linda) Veylupek, Cody, WY; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jim was of the Christian faith and will be greatly missed.

He was cremated under the direction of the Bram-Danfelt Funeral Home, Maryville, MO. A memorial to celebrate his life will be held at a later date

Keever, Billy Joe - Billy Joe Keever went to be with the Lord on May 10, 2014. Billy was the youngest of 4 sons born to Carl and Bertha Dawson Keever, Skidmore, MO

He attended Eureka country school and the Skidmore High School. He graduated from Lincoln Christian College, Stanton, Ill.

Billy was a minister and had preached at No 10 Potamac and Headyville in Illinois, Westside, Eastside, Pleasant Hill and Rockport in Missouri, Millersburg, Ohio, Independence, Kansas, and some ministry in Hawaii and Jamaica.

Bill was a loving husband, father, grandfather and preacher. He loved and worked with all types of people in his 60 years of Ministry.

Billy is survived by his wife, Betty of the home, son, Jerry Keever (Patty), Independence, MO, a daughter, Judy Hatfield (Steve), Odessa, MO, 7 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Donald, Dean, and Bob; and his son, Michael Keever.

Kevin E. Kent, 46, of Elmo, MO, passed away on Friday, April 25, 2014, at Heartland Hospital in St. Joseph, MO, following a lengthy illness.

Kevin was born in Maryville, MO, on August 13, 1967, to Paul V. and Marjorie Claire (Alexander) Kent, they preceded him in death.

A lifelong resident of Elmo, Kevin graduated from the West Nodaway High School, class of 1985.  He was of the Christian faith, and was self-employed before becoming disabled. 

He is survived by his children, Aaron D. Glidden, Braddyville, IA, Angela D. (Brad) Degase, Maryville, MO, Elizabeth J. Kent, Fairfax, MO, Brittney J. Greene, Amazonia, MO, Marjorie D. Kern, Althea M. Derks - Althea M. Kern, 78, of Ravenwood, MO, went to her heavenly rest on Saturday, May 24, 2014, at the Heartland Hospital in St. Joseph, MO.

Althea was born near Stanberry, MO, on July 19, 1935, her parents were Theodore Francis and Matilda Cecilia (Walter) Derks, and preceded her in death. She was also preceded by her husband, George V. Kern, in 2007; infant twin brothers, Theodore Francis (T.F.), and Cleodore Phillip (Cleo) Derks, Earl A. Derks, and Walter N. Derks; her grandparents, Phillip and Mary Walter, and Theodore and Johanna Derks; and numerous aunts, and uncles.

Althea attended the Fairview school, then the Clyde school, and graduated from Stanberry High School. She was a farm wife and mother and lived all her life in the Stanberry and Ravenwood, MO, area.

She was a member and attended St. Columba Catholic Church, and was a member of the St. Ann’s Altar Society, Conception Junction, MO.

On May 21, 1955, at the St. Peter’s Catholic Church, in Stanberry, MO, Althea was united in marriage to George Vincent Kern; they farmed together in the Ravenwood area until his death in 2007.

Lajcak, James "Jim" Carl - James "Jim" Carl Lajcak, 65, Maryville, Missouri, died Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at Heartland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph, Missouri.

Jim was born February 9, 1949, in Ashland, Wisconsin, to Andrew Thomas and Rose (Treba) Lajcak.

A 1968 graduate of Ondossagon, Wisconsin High School, he served his country in the United States Air Force from 1968 to 1989, where he worked as a general vehicle and body maintenance supervisor, retiring as a Technical Sergeant. He currently was a bus driver for Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville.

He married Linda Diane Rogers August 3, 1985 in Spokane, Washington.

Jim was a member of the Maryville St Gregory Barbarigo Catholic Church, Elk's Club, Chamber of Commerce, James Edward Gray American Legion Post #100, and the United States Bowling Congress.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Surviving Jim are his wife Linda Lajcak of their home in Maryville; two sons: Ben Lajcak, Boise, Idaho and Jessie Butler, Maryville; daughter Sheri Butler, Willston, Florida; two brothers: Thomas "Tim" Andrew Lajcak, Ashland, Wisconsin and Charles "Charlie" Joseph Lajcak, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; three sisters: Jane "Janie" Christine Ashbach, Ashland, Elizabeth "Betsy" Rose Tobin, Peshtigo, Wisconsin and Teresa "Tracy" Ann Pristash, Ashland; mother Rose Lajcak, Ashland and grandson John Paul Butler, Maryville.

A parish rosary will be 2:00 pm, Sunday, July 6, 2014, at St. Gregory Barbarigo Catholic Church, Maryville, with a visitation following from 2:30-4:30 pm.

Ervin J. “Joe” Luke, 80, of Maryville, MO, and formerly of Ravenwood, MO, passed away at his home on Saturday, July 12, 2014.

Joe was born in Clyde, MO, on July 11, 1934, to Frank H. and Regina (Abels) Luke, he had spent many years in Ravenwood, MO, and moved to Maryville 3 ½ years ago.

He was a 1952 graduate of Jefferson High School in Conception Junction, MO, and had worked 10 years for Robbins Lightning Protection, and then retired after 20 years as a warehouseman with N.E.B.S., both of Maryville. He was of the catholic faith.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, Leroy Luke, and Ralph Luke, and his sister, Vera Luke.

He proudly served his country during the Korean War while a member of the US Navy, Naval Air Division. He was honorably discharged in 1959.

On September 13, 1958, at the former St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Maryville, MO, Joe was united in marriage to Laura L. Wilmes, she survives of the home in Maryville.

Langley, Joyce Elaine - Joyce Elaine Langley, 72, Maryville, Missouri, died Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at Village Care Center, Inc, Maryville, Missouri.

Joyce was May 29, 1941, in Skidmore, Missouri to Roy C and Dorothy (Chapman) Langley.

Joyce was a member of the Laura Street Baptist Church.

Preceding in death were her parents, five brothers

Lynch, Mary Sweeney - It is with regret and sorrow that we record the death of Mrs. Mary Lynch, wife of Cornelius Lynch of Jefferson township, which occurred at her home on Thursday of last week, and from which she was conveyed to Conception the following day.

Mrs. Lynch, nee Sweeny, was born near Mill street in the county Cork Ireland, about the year 1829 and hence was about 56 years of age.  She and her husband moved to their farm at Conception about 20 years ago and by their thrift accumulated considerable property,  Mrs. Lynch was in every sense the type of a true wife and a discreet mother, vigilant alike of the interest of her husband her home and family.  She has always been a healthy robust woman, but that dreaded disease cancer fastened its fangs on her life strings and compelled her to succumb.  She leaves a husband and five children to mourn her loss. Leroy B. McGinness, 90, Maryville, MO, passed away on Monday, May 5, 2014, at his home in Maryville.

Leroy was born near Wilcox, MO, on August 5, 1923, to Reason L. and Mabel E. (Wilson) McGinness.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and 10 siblings, Mae Neidel, Pearl Andrews, Roland McGinness, Claire Thurman, Dale McGinness, Doris Draper, Dorothy McCullough, Verla Howard, James McGinness, and Cassie Draper. 

Leroy lived all his life in the Maryville area except for one year in Illinois.  He graduated from the Horace Mann High School in Maryville.   Leroy was in carpentry shop for NWMSU for many years, and then was a self-employed carpenter.  He was of the Christian faith and attended the First United Methodist Church in Maryville.  He volunteered for many things over the years and was always ready for a good visit.

On March 1, 1946, Leroy was united in marriage to Illa Mae Wray, in Troy, KS.  She survives on the home in Maryville.

Other survivors include his children, Gail (Eugene) Poppa, Maryville, MO, Wanda (Richard) Goodspeed, Maryville, MO, and Terry (Donnette) McGinness, Maryville, MO; 4 grandchildren, Kerry Poppa (Abby Jelavich), San Jose, CA, Stephanie Poppa, Maryville, MO, Nicole McGinness, Maryville, MO, and Ashley (Rick) Barthol, Olathe, KS; 4 great grandchildren, Nathan, Conner, Landon, and Brooke Barthol, all of Olathe, KS; and numerous nieces and nephews.

McGinnis, Christopher "Chris" Allan - Christopher "Chris" Allan McGinnis, 67, Maryville, Missouri, died Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at Heartland Regional Medical Center, Saint Joseph, Missouri.

Chris was born April 20, 1947, in Maryville, Missouri to Glen L. and Fern (Sego) McGinnis.

A 1965 graduate of Maryville High School, Chris was an assembly lineworker at UNIROYAL Corporation and a truckdriver for NOCOMO Industries for 22 years. Chris and Janice operated the Christmas Tree Farm for 20 years.

Chris married Janice Ackley Coy, May 1, 1983, in Maryville, Missouri.

Chris was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Maryville, enjoyed reading, antiques and traveling,

Preceding in death were his parents and brother Richard McGinnis (10-18-1974).

Harvey Lee McKim, 76, Maryville, Missouri, died Monday, June 23, 2014, at his home, Maryville.

Harvey was born January 8, 1938, in New Brighton, Pennsylvania to Harvey Dustin and Mary Thelma (Fhy) McKim.

After graduating from high school and attending college for two years, Harvey was a refinery operator for the ARCO Petroleum Company, Carson, California .

He married Theresa Ann VanPelt July 9, 1992, in Lakewood, California.

Harvey was a member of the Fraser Clan Association for California.

Harvey was preceded in death by his parents.

Eunice Louise Miller, 87, St. Joseph, MO, formerly of Savannah, MO, passed away on April 25, 2014 at Saxton’s Riverside Care Center where she resided.

Louise was born on October 13, 1926 near Harmony Ridge (Nodaway County), MO to Dorsey and Zua Treese.

She graduated from Hopkins High School, Hopkins, MO in 1944 and then enrolled at Chillicothe Business College and completed studies for a diploma in business. In 1948 she was hired at the Maryville St. Joseph Light and Power as a secretary/book keeper. Returning to the Chillicothe business College for two weeks, she also received a Commercial diploma.

In 1946 she married Kenneth Hilsenbeck and they raised four daughters, Phyllis Abbott, Nonda Sherbo, Clara Gilbert, and Shirley Butts. With four daughters, Louise quickly became involved in Girl Scouts and 4-H as a leader and supporter of the programs. In 1957 she became co-owner along with husband Kenneth, of “Kenny’s Rocket Café”, which she helped to run until the declining health of her husband forced the sale of the business in 1963.

Kenneth died in 1974 and Louise then became involved in activities of the American Legion and V.F.W. Auxiliaries, and also became a Red Cross volunteer. She also enrolled at the Northwest Technical School to brush up on secretarial and book keeping skills before becoming employed with Bagby Motors Inc. She also worked briefly at J. C. Penney in sales.

In 1977 Louise married John W. Miller and moved to Savannah, MO. John had 4 grown children, so again, Louise’s family doubled. They were able to take winter vacations before John’s health forced them to no longer travel; John died in 1990.

Louise was a member of the First Nodaway Primitive Baptist Church, Savannah, MO, and attended faithfully.

Louise was preceded in death by her parents Dorsey and Zua Treese, step mother, Ella Treese, brothers Marvin Monroe, William Carl, and Robert Treese, sisters, Alta Amis, Selma Cummings, husbands Kenneth R. Hilsenbeck (1974) and John W. Miller (1990), step-sons Oren and John D. Miller.

Survivors are sister Wanda Madge Yurkovich, St. Joseph, daughters Phyllis Abbott (Larry), Maryville, Nonda Sherbo, Riverside, MO, Clara (Jerry) Gilbert, Kirbyville, MO, and Shirley Butts, Liberty, MO, stepdaughter Peggy Daniels, CA and stepson Ernest Miller, St. Joseph. There are many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren along with step-grandchildren, step great grandchildren, and step great-great grandchildren left to mourn Louise’s death.

Nicholson, Roger Edwin - Roger Nicholson, age 81, of Braddyville, Iowa, entered into peace Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at Veteran’s Hospital, Omaha, Nebraska.  Visitation with the family will be held 5-7 p.m., Thursday, April 24, 2014 at the First Baptist Church, Clarinda, Iowa.  A private inurnment will be held at the Hopkins Cemetery, Hopkins, Missouri.  Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Clarinda, Iowa.  

Roger Edwin Nicholson was born October 18, 1932, in Royal, Iowa to Kirk and Pauline (Coleman) Nicholson, their fourth child.  The family moved to Hopkins, Missouri in the spring of 1940 where he grew up.  Roger graduated from Bedford High School in 1951.  Following graduation he served in the Korean War 1952-1954 working in communications doing Morse Code.  He then moved to California where he had numerous jobs working in the Steel Mill, Crowns Zeiller, Meeker Building Supply and as a brick mason.  Roger married Maxine Whitman on August 11, 1958 in Reno, Nevada.  They lived in California where their oldest daughter was born.  They moved to Iowa in the spring of 1967 after they bought a farm.  Three more daughters were born here.  Roger farmed and in 1970 he also got a job working for Taylor County on the bridge crew and running the road grader.  He retired from Taylor County.  Roger was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Hobert Nicholson and brother-in-law, Dick Huntsman.  Survivors include his wife Maxine of the home; daughters, Frayna Tunison (Richard), Regina Riley (Jerry), Susan Rees Cardwell (Wayne), Penny Sharp Swaink Parker (John); grandchildren, Laura, Benjamin, Micah, Joash, and Daniel Tunison, Justin and MaKayla Riley, James Rees, Kyle and Amber Sharp and John Swaink; brothers, Robert (Joan) and Richard (Linda) and sister, Rhoda Huntsman; sister-in-law, Irma Dean; numerous nieces and nephews and friends.

Peve, Brad A. - Brad A. Peve, 39, of Hopkins, MO, passed away on Saturday, May 17, 2014, as a result of a motor vehicle accident north of Hopkins.
Brad was born on February 8, 1975, in Maryville, MO, and had been a resident of Hopkins all his life. He was a graduate of the North Nodaway High School, class of 1994, and then graduated from the Maryville Technical School in 1995.
Brad was in production at Federal Mogul in Maryville for the past 15 years. He also owned and operated his own DJ service; F.N.C. DJ.
On March 7, 2002, in Maryville, MO, Brad was united in marriage to Sue Bears, she survives of the home in Hopkins.
Other survivors are his 3 sons, Wesley A., Dalton D., and Draven A. Peve, all of the home; his mother, Debbie (Peve) Dunn, of Hopkins; 2 brothers, Jeff Peve, Hopkins, and Wade Smith, Huntington, MO; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Marvin Dean Purviance, 86, died Wednesday, May 28, 2014, in Hemet, CA. He was born April 7, 1928 in Maryville, Missouri, the son of Harry Otto and Jennie Pike Purviance. He was united in marriage to Wanda Louise Frazee June 24, 1945. Wanda preceded him in death July 29, 1989. They had one son, William Craig Purviance who died March 18, 1994.

Marvin served in the United States Army Signal Service Corps as a radio operator in Sontra, Germany from January 1946 to May 1947. He retired from American Wholesale Hardware in January 1984. In his later years his favorite pastime was driving around the U.S. visiting and helping family and friends.

Others preceding him in death were two brothers, Harold and Billy Joe Purviance; three sisters, Nadine Jones, Burnetta Ulmer and Helen Hoshor.
Survivors include 5 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was member of the first Christian Church of Bellflower, CA.

Graveside services will be held Friday, June 13, 11:00 AM at Nodaway Memorial Gardens in Maryville.

Robinson, Clifton Henry - Clifton Robinson, age 71 of Olathe, Kansas died Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at the Saint Luke's Hospice House, Kansas City, Missouri.
Clifton Henry Robinson was born to Victor and Imogene (Templeton) Robinson on
October 21, 1942, in Maryville, Missouri. Vic was in the Coast Guard in California during
WWII, so Imogene and Clifton joined Vic in California. After the war, they returned to Bedford,
Iowa. Vic and Imogene ran the Lake of Three Fires, which Cliff swam across when he was six.
The family lived on the Templeton farm, and Clifton attended country school. When Cliff was in
the fourth grade, they moved to Sabula, Iowa. Cliff helped his dad with his commercial fishing
and trapping business. Imogene owned a restaurant on the Mississippi River where Clifton
probably developed his love of sweets by helping himself to the "goodies" in the restaurant. Cliff
returned to Bedford in the 8th grade. He enjoyed being in the Bedford Saddle Club with his
mother, sister Jeanne, and grandparents Cliff and Eva Templeton.
Cliff graduated from Bedford High School with the class of 1960 and married Dixie
Baker of the Bedford High School class of 1962. They celebrated their 50th anniversary last
summer. Cliff served in the Marine Corps and was stationed at the El Toro Marine base in
California. Cliff and Dixie remained in California after his service in the Marines. He attended
Iowa State but graduated from California State University in Fullerton, California with a BS in
Accounting.
After graduation, he worked for Arthur Young and Company in Santa Ana for nine years.
He then accepted a position as CFO of the Alison Company Real Estate Investment Company in
Newport Beach. He worked for them for nineteen years and finished his career with Sunray
Lighting in Irvine, California as their CFO. Cliff and Dixie moved to Olathe KS in 2004. Cliff
liked to travel and was proud of the fact that he and Dixie had visited all 50 states and had taken
a couple of cruises. He loved Hawaii and Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
They have two sons - Patrick and Scott. Patrick and his wife Gloria have three children -
Adam, Samantha, and Brodie. Scott and his wife Cathy have two sons - Troy and Chad.
Samantha and Hayden named their son William Henry after his great grandpa Cliff. He was
looking forward to Adam and his wife Miranda giving him a great granddaughter next month.
Cliff was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. He is survived by his wife, their
sons and families, his sister Jeanne and her husband Kevin Hogan all of Olathe, Kansas, as well
as many wonderful friends. He was well loved and will be forever missed!
Funeral services were held at 1 PM, Saturday, May 10, 2014 at Lange Funeral Home in Centerville with Reverend Francis Warren officiating. A visitation were held from 12:30-1:00 PM on Saturday at the funeral home. Interment with military rites follow in the Unionville Cemetery, Unionville, Iowa. Sears, Henry Buhler - Henry Buhler Sears, 86, Maryville, Missouri, passed away Monday, July 7, 2014, at Nodaway Nursing Home, Maryville, after a brief illness from pancreatic cancer.

Buhler was born April 19, 1928, in Maryville, Missouri to Dr. Kirtley and Vivian "Buhler" Sears.

He married Barbara O'Riley, April 21, 1954, in Maryville, who preceded him in death January 21, 2010.

Buhler began working with Sears Brother's Farms until he acquired the job of Postmaster of the Bolckow MO, Post Office in 1962. He served in that capacity 28 years before retiring. After retirement Buhler and Barbara moved to Lake Thunderhead in Unionville, MO, moving back to Maryville in 1996 to be closer to their family.

Buhler was a member of the St. Gregory's Barbarigo Catholic Church, Maryville, Host Lions Club 52 years, James Edward Gray American Legion Post #100 for 60 years, Retired Postmasters, and a Veteran of the Korean War serving as an Army Infantryman from 1950-1952.

Survivors include his children, son David and wifeTerina Sears, Maryville, MO, daughter Debra and husband Steve Cole, Rosendale, MO, six grandchildren, Connie Brosi, Cindy Ramsey, Christina Dennis, Allison Otte, John Cole, and Derrick Sears, 15 great grandchildren, brother Bill Sears, Arkoe, MO, and sister Shirley Zech, Maryville, MO.

Shelton, Patsy C. Foster - Patsy C. Shelton, of Maryville, MO, went to heaven on June 8, 2014, at the Golden Living Center of Maryville, MO, at the age of 74.

She was born May 29, 1940, in North Platte, Nebraska, to Jessie and Opal (Yearsly) Foster. Patsy was united in marriage to William Otis Shelton on April 8, 1960.

To this union 1 daughter, Christina Shelton Robinette was born. Preceding her in death by husband William (Bill) Shelton, her parents Jesse and Opal Foster, sister, Tesse Foster, and a very special friend Gene Angle.

Smith, Dewey Junior - Dewey Junior Smith age 87 passed away June 1, 2014 at his home in Maryville, Missouri.

Dewey was born, August 23, 1926, to Dewey and Grace Smith, of Berryville, Illinois. He stayed in the Berryville area marrying his first wife Margaret Strine in 1945 until her passing in 1952. Dewey and Shirley Ann Strockbine were married on July 4th 1953 in Oreo, Illinois. In 1955 they left the farm and moved to Indiana. In 1969 they moved to Alaska where they lived until returning to West Salem in 2006, finally moving to Maryville, Missouri in the fall of 2013.

After leaving the farm Dewey was a self-employed contractor specializing in light commercial and home construction. He also had a custom cabinet shop and enjoyed fine furniture making.
Dewey served his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Keokuk in the Pacific from 1944 - 1945. He was involved in four invasions including Iwo Jima. In 1945 he was injured and awarded the Purple Heart. While he was recuperating from his injuries he earned his high school diploma, courtesy of the Navy. Dewey was a member of the West Salem, Illinois American Legion Post #658.

Preceding Dewey in death were his parents, first wife Margaret Smith and brother, Russell Smith.

He is survived by his wife Shirley Ann; Sons: Ronald Smith and Susan of Angola, Indiana; Jerry and Elya Smith of Eagle River, Alaska; Scott and Glenda Smith of Maryville, Missouri; and Daughter Lori and Mike Flynn of Anchorage, Alaska; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 2 Brothers: Lowell and Ruth Smith of West Salem, Illinois; Tom and Eleanor Smith of St. Louis, Missouri; 2 Sisters: Pluma Litherland of West Salem, Illinois and Lela Williams of Mount Pleasant, Michigan.

At his request there will be no services in Maryville, Missouri.
A Military Graveside Memorial Service will be 10:00 am, June 18th, at Highland Memorial, Mount Carmel, Illinois

Turnbaugh, Neal - Dr. Neal Turnbaugh, 78, of Maryville, MO, passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at the Heartland Hospital in St. Joseph, MO.

Neal was born on September 25, 1935, in Nebo, IL, to Marvin Rutger and Vera Maudine (Scranton) Turnbaugh; they preceded him in death.

He graduated with an A.A. from Hannibal LaGrange College, then a B.A. from William Jewell College. Later he graduated from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, in Kansas City, MO, and then received his D. Min. Degree from Luther Rice Seminary, in Jacksonville, FL.

He was a pastor for several Baptist Churches in Missouri. He served as Area Director for Missions for 7 years in the Maryville area; then served in Marshall, MO. He retired due to ill health in 2000. He and Dorothy later returned to Maryville 10 years ago.

Neal spent several years serving his country and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Maryville. He enjoyed his Friday morning prayer breakfast with his friends from the First Baptist Church; and his 4th child, his Poodle, Mr. Spot, of the home.

Neal married Dorothy Jean Pearson on February 14, 1955, at the First Baptist Church, in Nebo, IL. She survives of the home in Maryville.

Other survivors include his children, Ronald (Teena) Turnbaugh, Des Moines, IA, Deborah Ann (George) Spire, Maryville, MO, and Jeanette (Jim) Garvin, Clinton, MO; his siblings, Dick (Ruby) Turnbaugh, Coatsburg, IL, Gene Turnbaugh, and Peggy Westerhold, both of Pittsfield, IL, and Edna (Paul) DePeugh, Decator, IL; 6 grandchildren, Cayanna (Shaun) Reinier, and Matthew Turnbaugh, all of Des Moines, Steven Spire, Maryville, Collin, Jackson, and Garrett Garvin, all of Clinton; 3 great grandchildren, Nolan, Addison, and Kinley Reinier, all of Des Moines; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 PM Thursday, May 15, 2014, at the First Baptist Church, Maryville, MO. The burial will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery, also of Maryville.

Valentine, Cleatis E. - Cleatis E. Valentine, 81, Kansas Cty, Mo., formerly of St Joseph, died Monday, Sept 23, 1996, at North Kansas City Hospital.

Born Aug 5, 1915, in St Joseph, to Louis and Alice Coffman Valentine he had retired in 1978 as a smokehouse attendant with the former Swift & Company after 35 years of service.

He married Frances Agnes Valentine, who preceded him in death.

Mr Valentine was a member of St Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Kansas City, Mo.; and a former member of Brookdate Presbyterian Church, St Joseph.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Cleota Jostmeyer; and an infant brother, Marlin Valentine.

Survivors include one son, Ronald D. Valentine of Kansas City, Mo.; two daughter, Jean Karlyn Meers of Agency, Mo., and Sondra K. Lansaw of McPherson, Kan.; one sister, Maralee Wichmer of St Joseph; 15 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Family visitation will be held from 7 yo 8 pm Wednesday, Sept 25, at Meierhoffer-Fleeman Funeral Home, St Joseph.

Volner, Donald Frederick - Donald Frederick Volner, 86, Maryville, Missouri, died Thursday, June 26, 2014, at Golden Living Center, Maryville.

Donald was born April 23, 1928, in Mountain Grove, Missouri to Alfred James and Effie Mae (Haggard) Volner.

Donald was employed for 40 years at Nodaway Packing Company.

He married Delores Edyss Jones on January 29, 1950, in Maryville.

Preceding in death were his parents and two sons Carey and Phillip Volner, brothers Earl and Junior and sisters Leona and Mia.

Survivors include his wife Delores Volner, five children: sons Kevin (Sherri) Volner, and Tony (Ann) Volner, both of Maryville, daughters Donalda (George) Faris, Louisville, CO, Laura Nichols, Maryville, Robin (Ed) Andzelik, Lincoln Park MI, brother Billy Volner, sisters Nina, Georgia, Glena, Katie, and Jean; 20 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

Weichinger, Theodore "Ted", Jr - Theodore "Ted" Weichinger, Jr., age 88 of Maryville passed away on Wednesday, April 23rd, surrounded by his family at Parkdale Manor. Ted was born on March 12, 1926 in Chicago, IL to Theodore and Blanche (Wethy) Weichinger.

After graduating from East Leyden High School in Chicago, Ted enlisted in the Naval Air Corps and was sent to Maryville for officer training with the V-12 program. He served his country until the end of WWII. He graduated from Northwest Missouri State Teachers' College, now Northwest Missouri State University, with a BS in Ed. He also received a MS in Ed from the University of Missouri, Columbia and a Doctorate of Education from the Colorado State College, now the University of Northern Colorado. Dr. Weichinger taught at Northwest Missouri State University for over 40 years.

During his first year in the Navy at Maryville, Ted attended a "get acquainted" dance and met a pretty girl in a blue dress. He and that pretty girl, Betty Affolter of Plattsburg, would have celebrated their 66th anniversary on May 29, 2014. They are the parents of three children, Sheryl (Terry) Buholt, Sara Beth (George) Duff and David Weichinger, all of Maryville. They also have eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Other survivors include a sister, Marjorie Roberts, Green Bay, Wisconsin, a brother, Lloyd Weichinger, Waxhaw, North Carolina and a sister in-law, Rachel Smith, Bellingham, Washington. Besides his parents, Ted was pre-deceased by a brother, Jim.

An avid outdoors person, Ted enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and camping with his family in Colorado. He enjoyed sports of all types, coached the KiwaniAnns softball team for many years and was a cross country runner. He always enjoyed watching his grandchildren in any activity they were participating and of course the NW Bearcats.

Ted was a member of the 1st Presbyterian Church of Maryville, the Maryville Men's Forum, the Levi and Laces Square Dance Club, the National Science Teachers Association and the Missouri Retired Teachers.

A Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 pm at Price Funeral Home, Maryville, Friday, April 25, 2014 and Services will be 10:30 am, Saturday, April 26th, at the Maryville First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Maryville.

Dolly Wyatt, of Braddyville, IA, passed away on July 13, 2014, at the age of 77.

Mildred DeLoris “Dolly” Rodriquez was born on July 31, 1936, in Maryville, MO, to David and Anna Rodriquez.

Dolly went to school and graduated from Horace Mann High School in 1954. She started her restaurant career at the age of ten, where she acquired her “second parents”, Dick and Lois Bowman.

She married Don Wyatt on March 31, 1955; and they had 3 children, Mike, Cindy, and Mark. They bought the “71” Café; but a year later Don passed away on October 6, 1969.

Dolly continued to work in the restaurant business; and when she moved to Braddyville, IA., where she eventually owned Dolly’s Country Kitchen, and Braddyville Saloon. Many friends enjoyed her donuts, tenderloins, strawberry pies, chocolate fudge, and just good eating and visiting.

Besides her husband Don, Dolly was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Avelina; her “second parents” Dick and Lois Bowman; Mark’s friend, Kathy Gearhart; and her “third son” Randy Butt.

Dolly is survived by her children, Mike and wife Pat Wyatt, of Maryville, MO; Cindy Adams, and Mark Wyatt, both of Braddyville, IA; grandchildren, Jesse Adams; Brianne Catalano and husband Gus, Tracy Adams Brown and husband Shad, and their children, Saige and Tadyn; Renee Adams McMahon and husband Tim and their son, Cian. 2 sister in laws, Darlene Jackson, and Wanda Gray, both of Maryville, MO; and brother in law, Gary Wyatt, St. Joseph, MO. She is also survived by many relatives and friends who will miss her greatly.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM, to 4:00 PM, Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at the Bram-Danfelt Funeral Home, Maryville, MO, then a short committal service will be at the Nodaway Memorial Gardens, also of Maryville.
