The above picture is from a war time photograph of Lizzie Powell, famed in story and song for her service to the Southern Confederacy. Her skill as a spy often brought to naught the plans of Union commanders. Eventually, Miss Powell was captured. Instead of being sent to the scaffold she was given her liberty on condition that she go to what is now the state of Nevada and remain there until after the war. She came to a tragic death in Denver in later years. While riding with the governor in a parade the horses ran away and she was killed. Miss Powell belonged to the Powell family near Strother and frequently visited that neighborhood during her Civil War career.
