Paris 

The county seat of Monroe Co., was first settled in 1831, incorporated as a village in 1837, and is located on the middle fork of Salt River, in Jackson twp. Central part of the county. It is a station on the M. K. & T. Railroad, now known as the Kansas and Texas line of the M. P. Railroad, 46 miles south west of Hannibal, 26 east of Moberly, and 172 north west of St. Louis. The village contains 6 churches: Christian, Presbyterian, 2 Baptist, and 2 Methodist. Educational facilities are afforded by the public schools for white and colored children. Amongst the hotels here the Glenn House is the only first class one, and has ample accommodation for the traveling public. Two newspapers are published here: the Monroe County Appeal is a wide awake Democratic weekly, has a large circulation, and besides a good family newspaper is first class advertising medium; the Mercury Printing Co. was established in 1848, and its paper, the Mercury, is published weekly, is a fearless Democratic organ, and is a first class county newspaper n every particular. Livestock and tobacco are the principal shipments. Pop., census of 1880, 1602. Land ranges in price from $10 to $80 per acre, the surface of the country being about equally divided between timber and prairie. Tel., W. U. Ex. U. S. Mail, daily. J. H. Holdsworth, postmaster.
