Jacob Elam Simon

My great grandfather, JACOB ELAM SIMON, served in the Civil War.

He enlisted in the Army of the United States on June 18, 1864 and served as a Private in Company
K in the 4th Regiment of the Provisional Enrolled Missouri Militia. He served a total of 267 days and
was discharged on March 11, 1865.

This regiment had been placed on "active duty" on April 23, 1863 in the district of North Missouri
operating against guerrillas in Henry,
St Clair, Ray and Carroll counties at St Joseph, MO. The 4th also operated in Chillicothe, Carrollton,
Lisbon and Richmond. They were involved in "a skirmish" at Fredericksburg on August 12, and saw
action at Glasgow on October 15 . . . probably in 1864.

My great grandfather survived the Civil War, but died in "a freak wagon accident" on July 25, 1892 at
the age of 50 years, in Carterville, MO. He is buried (next to his wife, Francis Curl Simon) in the
Oronogo Cemetery.

No known photos exist of Jacob. Military records list his surname as: Simons.

I have always thought it so sad that Jacob survived "the horrors of war" and then to die as a result of a
wagon accident.
