"St. Louis Artillery" 3rd Missouri Battery Artillery
The following roster comes from a parole list following the fall of Vicksburg, Mississippi (July 4 
1863) where the St. Louis Artillery surrendered. Organized in early 1862, its founding Commander 
was Capt. Emmett MacDonald. At surrender in Vicksburg, Capt. William E. Dawson was its 
commander. After exchange it was consolidated with Lowe's Battery but retained the name, 3rd 
Missouri Artillery ("St. Louis Artillery). The St. Louis Artillery was named for the location in 
Missouri where the majority of its men were recruited.

This unit is commonly referred to as the "St. Louis Artillery". It's first Commander was Capt. 
Emmett MacDonald and second, Capt. William E. Dawson. This unit surrendered at Vicksburg, 
Mississippi on July 4, 1863. Following exchange in Sept. 1863 it was consolidated with "Lowe's 
Battery" Missouri Artillery. Hence, the following roster contains names of men that formerly were 
in Lowe's battery, including Capt. Schuyler Lowe himself who for sometime commanded the 
consolidated "St. Louis Artillery".

Summary: Gorham's-Tilden's-Lesueur's Battery [also called 3rd Battery] was formed in 1862 with 
men from Laclede and Audrain Counties. The unit was assigned to Parson's and S.P. Burns' 
Brigade, then W.D. Blocher's Battalion of Artillery, Trans-Mississippi Department. It was active at 
Cane Hill, lost 1 killed, 8 wounded, and 3 missing at Helena, and sustained no casualties at 
Jenkins Ferry. The company totalled 43 men in May, 1862, and there were 82 fit for duty in July, 
1863. Towards the end of the war it was stationed at Camden, Arkansas, and surrendered in June, 
1865. Captains James Gorham, A.A. Tilden, and Charles B. Lesueur were in command. 


Although listed as "Daniel," David Timothy Hartshorn enlisted in Springfield, MO, 28 Jan 1862 as 
1st Lieutenant  in the Missouri State Guard, Co. C, 2nd Regiment, Cavalry, 7th Division. He was 
elected 2nd Lt. in 3rd Battery, Missouri Light Artillery (McDonald's St. Louis Battery, Mo. Vol., 26 
Jul 1862. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 26 July 1862 [UDC Record, State Hist. Soc., 
Columbia MO]. He was captured and later paroled 10 May 1865 at Meridian, Miss. His record 
was confirmed at the Sixth Annual Reunion, UCV, at the Sedalia Camp #985, Sedalia, MO, 1902.
