The following is part of an article that appeared in the Washington Missourian May 25, 1939. The article is about my great, great grandmother, Katherine Hoelscher who lived and died at 702 W 5th St, Washington, MO.. She was 94 at that time and was 97 yrs old when she died. At the time the article was written, Katherine "...has lived on Franklin County soil longer than any other living today..."  "Her parents left Germany when she was a baby in arms and settled on a farm near Port Hudson." She stated that "when she was a grown young lady, Price's Army came up the Springfield Road and camped for the night near her fathers place. They took her father away, but released him shortly afterwards. They also helped themselves to chickens and that night at camp the soldiers had chicken for supper. They left their half starved horses and rode away on the good ones taken from farmers. The night the soldiers camped there, they had a big fire and the soldiers sat around it. There was at least fifty men. We women folks congregated in the neighborhood and wondered what was going to happen to us. The men were all taken away."
