Cedar County Missouri Civil War Veterans

USA Solider

James Benjamin Crawford, b. 1824 in Wayne Co., IN.   He married Patience Shaw in Cedar Co. Aug. 15, 1850.     A certificate issued by the State of MO Adjutant-General's Office on Oct.
14, 1940,  he was enrolled on Oct. 2, 1863 at Stockton, MO, by Capt. S. S. Clark, in the 7th Prov Reg't E.M.M. Co. M, with the Rank of Sergeant.   He was ordered into active service on Oct 2, 1863 by C. B. Holland.   He died on October 13, 1863. Per letters written by James' mother Elizabeth Robbins Crawford in 1865 after the family arrived in California, James was at home when his house was burned.   Speaking of the fire, she writes to her brother:  "..was the
cause of James death -- he was sick an could not get out of the bed and Shelby and Oafy came rageing through town....". I have been told that James is buried in Hopewell Cemetery which is on
private property owned by Reba Hicks.

Major Thomas R. Livingston  was buried in a mass grave along with Captain Vaughn and two other of his men.  I am sorry, but I don't have Vaughn's first name.  They are buried in the old section of the Stockton Cemetery in Cedar County, Missouri.  There is no stone but historical records document that they were buried there. Thomas Robinson Livingston was born in 1820 in Montgomery County, Missouri.  He died at Stockton on July 11, 1863. Tom Livingston gathered around 200 cavalrymen and his guerrillas fought for the Confederacy in southwest Missouri.  He did receive a commission as major in the CSA.  On July 11, 1863, he rode into Stockton along with his men and attempted to capture the courthouse there so as to drive off the Union men and to gather needed supplies and ammunition.  He died during the raid and his men were driven off.  The Union men buried the Confederates in a mass grave in the cemetery. I would appreciate your attention to this listing.  I have just finished writing a book on Major Tomas R. Livingston and I hope to find a publisher soon. John C. Livingston Jr.
Major T.R. (Thomas Robinson) Livingston was buried in an unmarked plot in the Stockton City Cemetery after he was killed when his confederate guerillas attacked the courthouse in Stockton, MO (Cedar County) on July 11, 1863. John
