This regiment was organized at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, Sept. 6, 1861,
 to serve three years.  On the expiration of its term of service, the original 
members (except veterans), were mustered out, and the organization, 
composed of veterans and recruits, consolidated into a battalion of seven 
companies and retained in service.  Five new companies, composed of the 
veterans and recruits of the 7th Regiment Missouri Cavalry, were organized 
in February, 1865, and assigned to this battalion.  It was mustered out 
September 1, 1865.
