2 CONT My father was a hard worker and was very concerned about being a good provider. He was a memb
2 CONC er of the Masons and he felt organized religion was wrong by definition. It required money t
2 CONC o support the ministers and the church buildings. He felt strongly about God and right and wr
2 CONC ong. The bible is studied and memorized by members of the Masons as part of their membership.
2 CONT Dad worked long hours and was not remembered as an affectionate father. He did surprise me wi
2 CONC th gifts on several occasions such as a rubber ball attached with a rubber band to a paddle t
2 CONC hat I never mastered. Another was a double cone shaped piece of wood that was to be spun wit
2 CONC h a string attached to the ends of 2 sticks. I mastered the last one but still feel my coordi
2 CONC nation or reflexes must have been poor as I couldn't master the ball and paddle.
2 CONT Dad was in the CCC in his early years and then went to Chicago to become a refrigeration repa
2 CONC irman and pipefitter. Ice cream was not available until that time. The ice cream company he w
2 CONC orked for was Meadow Gold and they placed freezers in stores around the city of Chicago at th
2 CONC eir expense to allow the sale of ice cream for the first time. Prior to this ice cream was ma
2 CONC de by hand turning a crank using ice and salt to make brine colder than 32 degrees. Ammonia g
2 CONC as was used as the coolant in the compressors and frequently leaked into the store and cause
2 CONC d grief.  The union in Chicago was a closed shop arrangement meaning the union members ha
2 CONC d a high salary and was the highest in the nation in the 1950's.
2 CONT After the start of WW II, our family moved into a trailer after we had been living at 9805 Mi
2 CONC nick Ave., in Oaklawn, IL. We loaded everything into the trailer and began the first of man
2 CONC y moves around the Chicago area. We once took the trailer to MO for a visit. on the way bac
2 CONC k to Chicago we took my grandfather Shelmadine to Moline, IL to visit his sister Net (Shelmad
2 CONC ine) Timm, relatives that lived on a steep hill next to the John Deer estate. The car could h
2 CONC ardly make it up the hill with the weight of the trailer.
2 CONT Dad couldn't get work after a period of time around Chicago so went out Salt Lake where he go
2 CONC t spinal meningitis and collapsed in the bath tub. The land lady was very big and strong an
2 CONC d got him out of the tub when she heard him fall to keep him from drowning.
2 CONT Our Dr. told Mom she had to get out there or he would die due to lack of care. She found some
2 CONC one to take care of us and left. Turns out he was in quarantine and she could only sit outsid
2 CONC e his door. She probably lived in his apartment and looked after him after he came out of th
2 CONC e hospital.
2 CONT Back in Chicago only a couple of days after Mom left a letter arrived from my Aunt Doris Marc
2 CONC h offering to help out taking us kids, if worst came to worst, so she could go to Utah. Thi
2 CONC s woman got Nola and I in a car going thru Macon MO on their way to somewhere. I had to hol
2 CONC d Nola on my lap the whole trip.
2 CONT They dropped us off late one night as a surprise to Vernice. We stayed with her from mid wint
2 CONC er till early summer and attended the 7th grade at school in Macon. This was the old high sch
2 CONC ool where Mom attended. Dad got work finally in Washington on the Hanford Project (atomic bom
2 CONC b plant construction). Mom decided we were a family and just went out against Dad's wishes t
2 CONC o Washington where he got us an apartment in Yakima 70 miles from his work. He was in a car p
2 CONC ool that traveled there every day. The job was highly classified and he had to have a top sec
2 CONC ret security clearance to work there. The construction crew could only work in so many of th
2 CONC e several buildings and on only so many floors of each building to keep them from knowing wha
2 CONC t they were working on. Each floor had canvas dividing the floor into 4 squares with worker
2 CONC s not allowed to move between squares or talk with others from the other parts of the buildin
2 CONC g.
2 CONT When this job was over, Dad was on the road again looking for another job. The 3 of us live
2 CONC d in Chelan Falls WA in a rented cottage, no insulation or plastered walls till mid winter
2 CONC . I attended 8th grade from the beginning of the year till just before Christmas when we trav
2 CONC eled to Bremerton, WA looking for work in the ship yards with no luck. We traveled to Pheoni
2 CONC x AZ and lived with Francis and Eva Jacobs, some long time friends from Chicago.
2 CONT The 4 room apartment was very crowded and after no luck finding a job, Mom rented an apartmen
2 CONC t near Indian School in Pheonix where I attended Franklin school to finish the 8th grade. I a
2 CONC rrived only months before the test on the Arizona Constitution which was required for me to g
2 CONC raduate. It was waved with the understanding I not go to high school in AZ.
2 CONT We returned to MO by bus to Flagstaff where blasting caused an unexpected landslide blockin
2 CONC g the mountain road delaying us for several hours. We got the train the next day back to Maco
2 CONC n where we rented an apartment from Mrs. Binder who lived on a road leading SW out of town
2 CONC . I carried the newspaper for several weeks just as the war was coming to a close and carrie
2 CONC d the special edition on VJ day when the Japanese surrendered and read all about atomic bomb
2 CONC s not knowing I would later haul them around while a radio operator on a crew of an Air Forc
2 CONC e C-124 cargo plane.
2 CONT Mom and Dad had a bitter struggle over where to live and Dad couldn't get a very good job a
2 CONC s a refrigeration repairman in Macon where they didn't break down very often. I was the reaso
2 CONC n I think as I had been in 9 schools since leaving Ok Lawn, IL. I was
2 CONT pretty messed psychologically from getting beat up by the class bulley in each school. I coul
2 CONC dn't keep from crying when picked on and embarrased myself in front of my classmates. It wa
2 CONC s the same all the way thru highschool.
2 CONT Dad finally left, probably against Mom's wishes to work in Chicago where his union membershi
2 CONC p guarrenteed him a high salary. Mom refused to leave Macon. He would come home every month a
2 CONC nd spend a long weekend before going back.
2 CONT Dad and Mom got a divorce in 1947 after the woman he was living with called at 3:00AM drunk a
2 CONC nd told Mom she was pregnant. I heard the phone and the next day saw Mom hit dad's hand in an
2 CONC ger as he was pulling on her apron string knot to untie it. He had tears in his eyes and Nol
2 CONC a and I knew something serious had happened. I was seen by those in town as an unfortunate ch
2 CONC ild being from a broken home. Dad wasn't very affectionate and I don't remember getting hug
2 CONC s or sitting on his lap and we hadn't seen much of him as he worked so much late at night
2 CONC . I knew he loved me from his letters and Mom didn't make any bad remarks about him to destro
2 CONC y our relationship. I wrote letters regularly at Mom's insistance and visited him and his sec
2 CONC ond wife, Mary, a couple of times in Chicago before graduating from high school. Dad sent chi
2 CONC ld support faithfully. He would send us funny papers (cartoons) rolled up from the Chicago pa
2 CONC pers rather regularly. As an adult I continued to stay close to him and write regularly. Afte
2 CONC r getting married, I attended the Univ. of MO and he sent money at the beginning of each seme
2 CONC ster to help make ends meet.
2 CONT This was well beyond what was expected and a demonstration of his love.
2 CONT Dad sent letters to Mom which were informational in nature but said more about his feelings t
2 CONC han they did inside I think. During the last years of Dad's life, Mom sent letters to him to
2 CONC o at a P.O. Box several miles from his home. Mom made it clear to me they never were intimat
2 CONC e after the divorce.
2 CONT In 1975 or so when Mom lived in Hamilton, Mo, she ended up with a house and mortgage she coul
2 CONC dn't pay monthly with her limited income.
2 CONT Dad would come back to Hamilton and even stayed at Mom's without Mary knowing the details (
2 CONC I think) and did repairs around the house as needed at least once a year. Mom and Dad still l
2 CONC oved each other but Mom wouldn't allow him to cheat on his second wife no matter what. I ha
2 CONC d the feeling there may have been some tender moments between them but very mild. Dad paid of
2 CONC f the mortgage and told Mom this house was to be hers untill it was sold and if anything wa
2 CONC s left after she died then the remaining money was to be passed on to Nola and me as our inhe
2 CONC ritance from him. He also mentioned that he could not control how his estate would be divide
2 CONC d and he could not leave anything in his will to Mom or us without a big upset to Mary. Mar
2 CONC y did not know anything about Dad's finances as he kept savings accounts several places accor
2 CONC ding to the information passed to me by Mom. Nola and I waved our legal rights of inheritanc
2 CONC e when we attended his funeral. I often wondered what Mary thought about our willingness to s
2 CONC ign that document.  Mary must have moved very quickly to have that ready for our signatures w
2 CONC ith only a couple of days to prepare.
2 CONT Dad felt his primary function was to be a good provider to his family.

2 CONC e was a little town called Axtel. My family lived about a mile north of Axtel near the Wabas
2 CONC h railroad, which always seemed so important. To get to our mail box we had to cross the trac
2 CONC k and walk about a quarter of a mile farther. One of the greates thrills was to wave at the e
2 CONC ngineers on those great trains. It was March 23, 1910 when I joined the family. There were al
2 CONC ready 3 big sisters, Eva, Beatrice, and Alice, and a brother, Ted. Another sister less than t
2 CONC wo years older than me and small for her age, Ellen, was about my size. The four older childr
2 CONC en were all red heads, various shades, and very attractive. Ellen was blond and I was dark sk
2 CONC inned and dark brown haired, often called black. We were called Blackie and Whitey by peopl
2 CONC e together in the baby carriage. Later Emma was born. She was little and had white hair, call
2 CONC ed cotton by those same people mentioned before. I remember seeing her as a little baby wit
2 CONC h white curls, asleep on the floor where we had been playing.
2 CONT Two years later Lou joined the family. She was a pretty little baby with black curly hair. Sh
2 CONC e made such a wonderful impression on this little kid called Clara, that as she grew olde
2 CONC r I often wished for more little sisters, but she was the last one. She is still living in In
2 CONC diana. I was 4 years older than Lou. When she was about 2, we were playing peek-a-boo, her i
2 CONC n her high chair by the dinning room table and I outside the window. Others of the family wer
2 CONC e not there at the time, busily occupied elsewhere. I can only imagine what happened as the l
2 CONC ast thing I remember was playing with her, the next, sitting on a chair by the table with a h
2 CONC urting chin with a bandage wrapped from that chin over the top of my head. I had no idea wha
2 CONC t had happened to me but later someone told me they found me black in the face, so my feet mu
2 CONC st have slipped from under me and landed my chin on the outside window ledge, locking my jaw
2 CONC s and putting an end to my life, had not my Mother pryed open my jaws with a table knife hand
2 CONC le, blew breath down my throat and brought me back to life again. Poor Mamma. That was the fi
2 CONC rst of several accidents that followed.
2 CONT In the barn lot I fell against a log with a knot on it and tore my knee open. That time I did
2 CONC n't know what happened and lifted the hem of my dress.
2 CONT I saw that awful gash and that's the last I remember for sometime.
2 CONT They said I wouldn't walk so they had to carry me to the house.
2 CONT The next thing I remember was sitting on the ground against something with a pillow under m
2 CONC y knee. Several years later having a ride in our doctors buggy as he came to check on my brot
2 CONC her who was recuperating from a ruptured appendix, seeing my knee he said, "If that had gon
2 CONC e a bit deeper you would have been crippled for life". He was a wonderful doctor. That time m
2 CONC y mother had taken care of my wound, no stitches were taken, he probably told her what to do
2 CONC , I really don't know. Soon after that Ellen and I were sitting atop posts of a new fence an
2 CONC d hearing a call from the house, somehow I tore open my hand on the barbed wire fence. No on
2 CONC e had called us they said, but any way Clara was in trouble again. Laying the skin together a
2 CONC fter properly bandaging, a piece of metal was placed against the hand to keep it flat open. A
2 CONC gain no stitches and I was later told by a doctor that had stitches been taken my hand woul
2 CONC d have been stiff and I wouldn't be able to write probably, or use it other ways.
2 CONT End of autobiography. ******************************************************************** Mo
2 CONC m passed away April 4, 1997 after struggling with several illnesses since entering the hospit
2 CONC al in October of 1995 with anemia from internal bleeding in her colon.  After searching for t
2 CONC he exact location for more than a week and about a dozen pints of blood to keep up with the f
2 CONC low, a colonectomy was performed leaving the lower or last 12 inches of her colon allowing he
2 CONC r normal elimination. There were many trips to the hospital for a broken hip, heart attack, p
2 CONC neumonia, totaling about 6 hospital visits.
2 CONT It was expected at first Mom would make it back to her apartment where she had moved in 198
2 CONC 6 after arriving from Hamilton, MO.
2 CONT Prior to her death Mom had been receiving medication for high blood pressure when suddenly he
2 CONC r heart rate dropped to 29-32 beats per minute on April 3 about 9:00AM. Mom refused to go th
2 CONC e hospital to be treated and went into a kind of slumbering conciousness. By 10:00PM she wa
2 CONC s resting peacefully and receiving high oxygen levels to help her sustain sufficient blood ox
2 CONC ygen.  She passed away the next morning about 9:30AM April 4. *******************************

2 CONC ife that let you know more about her.
2 CONT She told me as a little girl that her father had a gift of some sort that let him know and pr
2 CONC epare for the death of 2 of his daughters Eva and Alice. Grampa told Mom one of them would no
2 CONC t live to be an adult and the other wouldn't live much past getting married. This is more m
2 CONC y words than Mom's from my memory. Times were very bad about the time was 10 years old. She h
2 CONC ad to walk to school in the snow without shoes. I had heard this when I was very small and af
2 CONC ter getting in my teens I finally found out she wasn't walking the mile and 1/2 with bare fee
2 CONC t but had several pairs of socks that were taken off to dry after getting to school.
2 CONT It was about 10 years of age, 1920, Mom told her mother that there would be a letter in the m
2 CONC ail box asking for her to come to town and live with a family while working for them doing ho
2 CONC usework etc. I think this was the Will family. When the letter was brought to her Mother, he
2 CONC r jaw dropped open in surprise at its contents. Mom left the farm never to return and felt i
2 CONC t was partly or mostly due to her parents not wanting her to return because it was another mo
2 CONC uth to feed. She felt unloved by her parents from that point on.
2 CONT Mom worked for several families, one of which was the Howell's who owned a dairy east of tow
2 CONC n about 2 miles. She worked there during high school. She had to walk to town to go to high s
2 CONC chool every day. One of the families were Miller's who were members of the Reorganized Churc
2 CONC h of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Church. Mom joined that church at about age 16.
2 CONT When Grampa died it was like the icing on the cake. He was so attached to the his only boy, T
2 CONC ed, that he left the farm to him. The explanation I received was that Ted was having such a h
2 CONC ard time making ends meet and all of the girls had husbands with good jobs. The girls didn'
2 CONC t need a share of the inheritance as bad as Ted did. The girls didn't get a dollar. This wa
2 CONC s one more reason to feel unloved by her parents.
2 CONT Mom, Clara, left out being married and having a couple of kids in her autobiography. Dad, Nol
2 CONC an, went off to Chicago after dating Mom for some period of time. Now after being divorced fo
2 CONC r many years she told me she felt Dad wanted to get married real quick when he came back fro
2 CONC m Chicago on a visit. They got married the day after Christmas 1929. Mom felt he may have bee
2 CONC n escaping from a gal he got in trouble (pregnant) while living away in Chicago. They lived i
2 CONC n a rough neighborhood where gangsters lived and got shot frequently when I was born 11/26/19
2 CONC 31. Dad and Mom were boarding a streetcar that was very crowded when a man yanked Mom off bac
2 CONC kwards while she was very pregnant with me. Dad went after the man in protest and got hit i
2 CONC n the face with a pair of brass knuckles breaking Dad's jaw.

2 CONT This is from the Osceola Record, Osceola, NE Thursday, April 8, 1897. Married at the home o
2 CONC f Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Forsyth, in Wayeland Township, on the 24th inst., Mr. Leonard Shelmadin
2 CONC e to Miss Ethel Bailey. Rev. A.L. Sarchet officiating. Both these young people aer comparativ
2 CONC e strangers to the people in this vicinity. Mr. Shelmadine came here a little over a year ag
2 CONC o and by his close attention to the interests of his employers and his manly character he ha
2 CONC s made a friend of every acquaintance. The bride is a young lady of pleasing manner. She cam
2 CONC e here from Fulton, KS. Mr. and Mrs. Shelmadine are now "at home" on J.S. Jackson farm, seve
2 CONC n miles west of Griswold (Iowa) America. Both these young people were residents of this count
2 CONC y and have a large circle of friends at Osceola who will follow them with best wishes in thei
2 CONC r married life.
2 CONT  !When they came to Missouri, they purchased land 1/10th of a mile east from  the rail road a
2 CONC nd highway. They lived in a log cabin several years until the two story home was built heate
2 CONC d with oak burning wood stoves. The wood came from the timber about 1/2 miles west of the rai
2 CONC l road and north of the road thru Axtel where there was also a hilly hay field which supplie
2 CONC d the feed for the stock and horses. He raised sheep and a few cattle and milked 3 or 4 cow
2 CONC s for the family and cream to sell. The old red "separator" was mounted on the cement floor j
2 CONC ust inside the rear entrance to the home.
2 CONT !My grandfather took pride in his farm and his family. He only had one son and many daughters
2 CONC . He left the farm entirely to his son at his death trying to give Ted a better life as the d
2 CONC aughters supposedly had all married and were doing better than Ted would be able to do unles
2 CONC s he received the farm.This was Mom's version of why this was done.
2 CONT Mom was not forced to leave home at 10 years of age, but she left home to work in peoples hom
2 CONC es and the Howell dairy later in high school. She did not feel she would be welcome to live a
2 CONC t home after that time. Leonard was a strong parent and grandfather who had a hard time provi
2 CONC ding for his children. When in high school, I remember he felt the government was forcing hi
2 CONC m to feed the nation without giving him a meaningful share in the nations success. Governmen
2 CONC t programs were never right for his crops and he felt exploited. Later when Bea came to liv
2 CONC e with him before marrying a second time, he was making his living selling cream and eggs t
2 CONC o the store at Axtel a little more than a mile south on the main highway.
2 CONT I remember him as a distant grand father who would display his affection rarely by hugging. H
2 CONC e loaded several of us in a wheel barrow and pushed it around for a few minutes before the lo
2 CONC ad became too much. We wanted the ride to go on much longer. I was allowed to shoot the octag
2 CONC on shaped barrel, lever action rifle at a target that was a white headed nail in the middle o
2 CONC f a disk plate of a cultivator. My cousin, Billy Don Roberts also got interested in this an
2 CONC d when I was in high school a new single shot rifle was purchased probably just for us to enj
2 CONC oy.
2 CONT Just about the time I started high school he built a pond expecting the families and grandchi
2 CONC ldren to come visit and swim and have big get togethers on his farm.
2 CONT One of my worst memories was when my Aunt Lou Powers brought margarine home from Indiana wher
2 CONC e colored margarine could be sold in 1/4 lb. sticks like butter. She put it on the table duri
2 CONC ng a big "family get together" and he bragged on her buying butter to help keep the price o
2 CONC f cream up so he could make a living selling cream. After he smacked his lips many times abou
2 CONC t how good it was on the hot rolls she sprung the trap and told him it was margarine. She sho
2 CONC wed him the package and he went out to the barn and stayed until everyone left. I was so ma
2 CONC d at my aunt Lou and all of his girls that let her do this to him. This had to be just as th
2 CONC e war was getting over in 1945 when gasoline was availble again.
2 CONT Grampa was a believer in water witching and told me about it when I was very young. So youn
2 CONC g that I could stand on his shoes while he showed me how well it worked. He saw me walking ar

2 CONC g the "force" was. Later I got laughed out of my science class when I told them about it. Sin
2 CONC ce then I've experimented and read many books on the subject and as an engineer I know ther

2 CONC d Albert Sholley on July 28, 1948. Mrs. Sholley at one time taught in rural schools of Adai
2 CONC r County. She was a member of the Macon Methodist Church. 
2 CONT Survivors include two sons, Walter Slover of Macon, Wendell Slover of Peru, Illinois; a broth
2 CONC er Ted Shelmadine of rural Macon; four sisters, Mrs. Ellen Perrin of Macon, Mrs. Clara Mette
2 CONC s of Cameron, Mrs. Emma Collins of Wenatchee, Washington, Mrs. Lou Powers of Hammond, Indiana
2 CONC ; six grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, on

2 CONT !Franklin Pierce, 3rd child of William D. and Ellen Nolin Shelmadine, was born June 19, 186
2 CONC 3 in Franklin, Erie Co. PA.
2 CONT From 1869 to 1870 the family lived in Ashalnd, NE, then moved to Michigan and later to Indian
2 CONC a where they spent the next nine years. Upon their return to Polk Co., the family settled nea
2 CONC r Shelby, and after a time moved to Osceola.
2 CONT In 1893 he was united in marriage to Durdelle M. Hefflegower, and to this union were born fiv
2 CONC e daughters and one son, a daughter, Myrtle, preceding her father in death 6 years ago.
2 CONT Mr. Shelmadine has made his home in Osceola for the last 40 years and passed away suddenly a
2 CONC t work at his home on Friday afternoon, November 22, at the age of 83 years 5 months and 3 da
2 CONC ys.
2 CONT Frank was a mason by trade and took great pride in his work. He was devoted to his family an
2 CONC d his cheery disposition made him a welcome companion among his many friends.
2 CONT He is survived by his widow; five children: Glen C. Shelmadine, of Kearney, NE, Mrs. C.B. Pet
2 CONC tet, DesMoines, IA, Mrs. G.W. Merrick, Laramie, Wyoming: Mrs. E.J. Tschanner, Lindsay, OK an
2 CONC d Bess, at home; two brothers, Fred M. of Alliance, NE, and Leonard L. of Macon, MO, two sist
2 CONC ers, Mrs David Timm Moline, Illinoise and Mrs. Guy Peterson, Lake Port, California; 25 grandc
2 CONC hildren and 6 great grandchildren.
2 CONT Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock PM on Monday from the Methodist Church at Osceola, Re
2 CONC v. G.A. Randall, officiating, assisted by Rev. John Herrmann. Internment was made in the Osce
2 CONC ola cemetery.

2 CONC . The car knocked badly and could hardly make it up the hill with the weight of the trailer
2 CONC . I remember very vividly the spark knock of the engine as it slowly made it up the steep hil
2 CONC l in low gear with the trailer coming along behind.

2 CONC .  "D E Shelmidine, nurseryman and florist, proprietor of the 'Kendallville Nursery'; was bor
2 CONC n in Cortland Co., NY on December 9, 1817. In 1829 his parents moved to Oil Creek, Crawford C
2 CONC ounty, Penn. and into the lumber business.  In 1854, after the death of his father, he move
2 CONC d to Iowa, and arriving at this place, he drove down stakes, before the township was organize
2 CONC d.  He took the claim he now owns, proved upon the same, and obtained the patent; sold the gr
2 CONC eater prtion of the original claim, which was 160 acres, now owning only 33 acres, joining th
2 CONC e village of Kendallville, and established the above named nursery thereon in 1872.  There ar
2 CONC e ten acres of timber and the balance is laid out as the nursery.  It is rich bottom land, an
2 CONC d well fitted with choice nursery stock, including many varieties of apple trees, all varieti
2 CONC es of Hybrids; also all varieties of small fruits, and shade and ornamental trees and evergre
2 CONC ens.  Mr S is doing an extensive business. . . He has a good barn and comfortable residence
2 CONC , which latter was erected in 1856, built of logs and boarded.  He served one term of two yea
2 CONC rs as member of the board of supervisors in 1861 and 1862.  There was one member elected fro
2 CONC m each township in those days, and they received the handsome amount of $1.50 per day as remu
2 CONC neration, receiving pay in warrents worth $.65 on the $1.00. . . He was married in 1844 in Pe
2 CONC nna. to Miss Sarah W. Hunter, who died June 24, 1878, at this place, leaving four children, M

2 CONT !Datus married life in Crawford Co. Pa was therefore ca 1844-1854, and it was in Randolph Tw
2 CONC p where he was living at the time of the 1850 census.  He appears to have been somewhat o
2 CONC f a land-jockey, as the Crawford Co courthouse deed books show that he and Sarah purchase
2 CONC d 7 pieces of property between 1848 and 1854 in Oil Creek and Randolph Twps.  All this land w
2 CONC as sold, probably at a good profit, the last sale being 8 May 1854.

2 CONT !Janet Humble, a great great granddaughter, sent the information that in 1854 datus, Sarah an
2 CONC d 2 small daughters born in Pa (Malinda and Adah) came from Pa in a covered wagon and found a
2 CONC n area they really loved.  This was the area of Kendallville Iowa, just north of Cresco.  Dat
2 CONC us bought much of the land in the area, was the founder of a settlement known as Enterprise o
2 CONC r Coldwaters Springs.  He was also the co-founder of the Kendallville mill, the assessor in t
2 CONC he area, and a nursery-man.

1 NOTE !A brief history of the Shelmadine family.  The first Shelmadine we know of now was Richard S
2 CONC helmandine later Shelmadine.  There are still Shelmandine's living in the same area where Ric
2 CONC hard lived.
2 CONT    There were various other spellings of the name, partly due to the census takers who ofte
2 CONC n spelled names as they sounded to them, instead of proper spelling.
2 CONT    Nothing was known of Richard S. orhis family until the record of his marreage to Catherin
2 CONC a Kiskern in 1774 at St. Paul's Evangelical Luthern Church, Schoharie, NY, Feb. 15.
2 CONT    This reecord states that:
2 CONT Richard was born in England, May 1753
2 CONT Catherina, his wife, born in Schoharie, NY, June 18, 1748.
2 CONT    Later, Richard was a sergeant in the Revolutionary War.
2 CONT 
2 CONT   !(Possible parents, not proven, of Richard were: William Shelmerdine, of Kennedy, died 176
2 CONC 8 at age 60.
2 CONT Ludia Shelmerdine, died 1769 at age 53. Both buried in Northenden Church, England.

2 CONT Mrs. Beatrice Slover Sholley passed away Tuesday evening at Keytesville Rest Home, where sh
2 CONC e had been a patient. 
2 CONT Mrs. Sholley was born May 9, 1900 in Pottowattamie County, Iowa, the daughter of Leonard L. a
2 CONC nd Ethel Bailey Shelmadine. She was married November 22, 1919 to Abe Slover and later marrie
2 CONC d Albert Sholley on July 28, 1948. Mrs. Sholley at one time taught in rural schools of Adai
2 CONC r County. She was a member of the Macon Methodist Church. 
2 CONT Survivors include two sons, Walter Slover of Macon, Wendell Slover of Peru, Illinois; a broth
2 CONC er Ted Shelmadine of rural Macon; four sisters, Mrs. Ellen Perrin of Macon, Mrs. Clara Mette
2 CONC s of Cameron, Mrs. Emma Collins of Wenatchee, Washington, Mrs. Lou Powers of Hammond, Indiana
2 CONC ; six grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, on
2 CONC e son, husband and two sisters. 
2 CONT Funeral services were held Thursday at Bram Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m.. conducted by Rev. Fred
2 CONC erick Lawson, with burial in the LaPlata Cemetery.

2 CONT    GLENN SHELMADINE SERVICES HELD
2 CONT   Funeral services were held Feb. 28 for Glenn G. Shelmadine 58, Broken Bow, who died suddenl
2 CONC y Feb. 26 after suffering a heart attack.  Rev. Albert Monkman conducted services in the Schn
2 CONC eringer-Johnson Funeral Home.
2 CONT    Mar. 1, services were held at Osceola with a military burial in the Osceola Cemetery.
2 CONT    Glenn Grant Shelmadine, second child of Frank and Berdella Shelmadine was born July 15, 18
2 CONC 95 near Osceola and died at Sargent.
2 CONT    He was graduated in 1915 from the Osceola high school and attended York College.
2 CONT    On Sept. 25, 1917, he was married to Esther V. Wieseman, a  high school classmate. To thi
2 CONC s union five children were born.
2 CONT    Shelmadine entered the United States Army in 1918 and served in the field artillery.  Afte
2 CONC r discharge from the service, he entered the grocery business at Silver Creek and operated i
2 CONC t for 19 years.  In 1938 he and his family moved to Kearney so that his children could atten
2 CONC d college.  There he was employed by the C. C. Whitmark Produce Company.  Two years ago, he a
2 CONC nd his wife moved to Broken Bow where he was employed as a salesman for the Donald Company o
2 CONC f Grand Island.
2 CONT    Shelmadine was a memeber of the Eastern Star, Past Master of the Masonic Lodge at Silver C
2 CONC reek, and a member of the American Legion and the Methodist Church of Broken Bow.
2 CONT    Survivors include his wife of Broken Bow; four children; Mrs Lucille Marks, Parsons, Kans.
2 CONC , Philip, Kearney; Mrs. Nona Ruff, Omaha, and Mrs. Norma Murray, Grand Islandl four sisters

2 CONT    Esther Verna Wieseman, oldest child of Philip and Margret Wieseman, was born March 26, 189
2 CONC 8 on a farm near Osceola, and died Oct. 6, 1967 at the Annie Jeffrey Memorial at the age of 6
2 CONC 9.
2 CONT    She was graduated in 1915 from the Osceola High School.  Sept 25, 1917, she was married t
2 CONC o Glenn Grant Shelmadine who died in February of 1954.  They had 5 children. A son Max, die
2 CONC d in infancy.
2 CONT    After 20 years in Silver Creek they moved to Kearney and later to Broken Bow.
2 CONT    After her husband's death, Esther moved back to Osceola where she spent 12 years working i
2 CONC n nursing homes.
2 CONT    She was past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star, member of the Methodist Church, W
2 CONC SCS and the American Legion Auxiliary.
2 CONT    Surviving are her mother, Mrs. Margret Wieseman, 4 children, Mrs. Lucille Marks of Emporia
2 CONC , Kans., Philip of Portland, Ore., Mrs. Helen Ruff of Omaha, and Hrs. Ruth Murray of Kearney
2 CONC , a sister, Mrs. Irma Wills of Omaha, a brother, Carl Wieseman of Osceola, 11 grandchildren a

2 CONT    Those who shared life with Phil Shelmadine were blessed to know a warm and engaging huma
2 CONC n being.  Let us praise God for Phil's touch on our lives.
2 CONT    Phil was born and spent his childhood in Silver Creek, Nebraska.  He was the third of fiv
2 CONC e children born to Glenn and Esther Shelmadine.  He entered Kearney State Teachers College, a
2 CONC nd graduated there, though his studies were interrupted when he enlisted in the US Navy in 19
2 CONC 42.  He served until 1945 as a pilot on the USS Attu in the Pacific.  After teaching one yea
2 CONC r and operating a bottling plant for several years, Phil entered his principle career as a ma
2 CONC nufacturer's representative for auto parts and accessories.  While still in Nebraska he als
2 CONC o worked as a basketball referee for six seasons.  He always remained a sports enthusiast an
2 CONC d became an avid golfer.
2 CONT    Phil married Helen Keubler at Kearney on March 2, 1952.  They shared the joys and challeng
2 CONC es of life for almost 35 years.  Helen Survives him as do his sisters Lucille, Ruth and Helen
2 CONC .
2 CONT    Family members say that Phil was apt at being Santa Claus at family Christmas gatherings
2 CONC .  He was loyal to his friends, reliable and honest in business.
2 CONT    Phil was baptized in 1921 in the Methodist Epicsopal Church in Silver Creek. He has been a
2 CONC n active member of St. Timothy since 1973 and has served us as Head Usher and Church Counci
2 CONC l member.  He chaired the Chancel Remodeling Committee and was very active with the Funraiser
2 CONC s.
2 CONT    Phil will be buried tomorrow at Mt. View Cemetery in Tacoma.
