He came to America in 1867 and on October 20, 1870, was united in marriage to Mary C. McWilliams. Their happy companionship continued until her death November 8, 1880. To this union was born one son, Thomas Joseph, who died June 12, 1905.

Mounce he too passed into the Great Beyond, being at the time of his death 79 years, 10 months and 8 days old.

Beside a large and mourning acquaintanceship he leaves in grief his two granddaughters, Mrs. Lloyd Roemer and mrs. R. O. Mounce, both living near Atlanta, Mo., and an aged sister, Martha Ann, a brother Benjamin and two nephews, Thomas and Joshua Oates, the last four named living at this time at Shelf, near Halifax, Yorkshire, England.

Coming to this country as a young man with meager means, Mr. Oates during his long residence here by untiring industry and rugged honesty not only accumulated an ample competence but by his high ideals held for himself a high place in the esteem of his neighbors and acquaintances.

The funeral was held in Mt. Tabor church Sunday afternoon, February 5, 1922, with burial in the adjoining cemetery, the services conducted by Ralph Campbell of Gibbs.
