Historical Society Meets

The Macon County Historical Society met August 3 in downtown Macon with 27 members and guests present. George Morgenweck presided and opened the meeting with a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

He then introduced Barbara Lamb Leuty who represented the Class of 1955. She presented the Historical Society a check in the amount of $3,300 which represented the sale of a painting of the Macon County Courthouse by John Stoeckley of Louisiana. The painting was purchased by the Macon-Atlanta State Bank and is on display at the bank. Also in attendance from the Class of 1955 were Bonnie Bradley and Mary Lou Teter. The class is selling prints of the painting until the end of the year with the funds going to the Genealogy Room of the Macon Public Library. Since the Loch Haven Nursing home is redecorating their assembly room the members voted to present them with one of the framed prints.

George Morgenweck said the Macon County tax books have been put on microfilm and the original tax books starting in 1936 are in storage in the Gary McElwain building on North Rollins. The original Probate Records are stored in the Episcopal Church building across the street.

The group discussed finding a building to store all of the records and other historical memorabilia owned by the Historical Society. A committee will be appointed to look into this.

Jack Lee donated three County Directories to the Historical Society.

After the business meeting the President introduced Merlyn Amidei who discussed the upcoming Theodore Gary Day to held on Friday, August 11. She gave a brief history of his life and then told of the different activities planned for the day. A number of signs are located around town telling of the activities.

The meeting was adjourned with the next meeting to be held on Thursday, November 2 at the Apple Basket.
