Historical Society MeetsThe Macon County Historical Society met on November 3, 2005 at a local restaurant with President George Morgenweck presiding. After leading the group in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, he introduced William Truitt who spoke on the restoration of the McDuffee cabin located at the Macon County Park. The cabin was originally constructed on the McDuffee farm located about three miles northeast from Atlanta in 1842 and moved to the Park in 1980. The cabin is in need of repairs and the McDuffee family is presently working with a gentleman who restores cabins for estimates. The plans are to make it more like the original by adding porches and a fireplace designed in the time period, also to add the loft like in the original. As a follow up on the cemetery project, President Morgenweck reported that a family cemetery had been located southwest from LaPlata with stones dating back to 1840. It is being restored. The University of Missouri has fenced the Brown family cemetery located about six miles east of Macon on the south side of Highway 36. The Macon Sesquicentennial committee have asked the Historical Society to help in locating a descendant of Nathaniel Macon, the prominent North Carolina Congressman for whom Macon was named. President Morgenweck called attention to the new Library Sign located at the junction of Hwy 63 & Vine. An open house will be held on Saturday, November 19th, 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the new Probate Records Room located in the Episcopal Church building. The records are the original county records which were copied by Salt Lake City a number of years ago and preserved by the Historical Society. The public is invited. The Historical Society will be decorating a tree for the Blees Still-Hildreth museum following the theme A Story Book Christmas. The meeting was adjourned with the next one to be held on Thursday, February 2, 2006, at 1:00 p.m. at the Macon Public Library.
