Historical Society Meets

The Macon County Historical Society met Aug 4, at 6:00PM at the Apple Basket restaurant with Mary McIntosh, Archivist with the Missouri State Archives Local Record Division, as the guest speaker. She told of her work with county offices in helping to find old records, cataloguing them, and recopying some. Her main purpose is to help county offices organize and retire old records. She told of many interesting cases which have been uncovered.

The Macon County probate records and wills were copied on film in the 1980s. The original records were given to the Historical Society for safekeeping and have been in storage until recently when the society rented space in the former Episcopal Church building. The records have been filed in new boxes in numerical order by Calista Dunham and George Morgenweck and

will be opened to the public September 1, 2005 by appointment only.

President Morgenweck reported on the Cemetery Project and said a number of family cemeteries have been located and recorded.

He reminded members of plans to honor the late Josephine Morrow with a picture and plaque at the genealogy room of the Macon Public Library on August 13, 2005 at 2 p.m. Friends are welcome to attend.

The meeting was adjourned with the members touring the new Probate Records Room in the former Episcopal Church building. The next meeting will be Nov. 4, 2005 at the same time and place.
