The 1900 Rowan County Kentucky census lists
David Hall in house #97 in Pine Grove. His home house five outher people
who were listed as "borders". Riley Hall and his wife Martha and their children
Linda, Richard and Neva Hall. Great-Grandpa Floyd Hall's second wife, whom
he married in 1899, was Mary Hall, the daughter of Riley Hall. She was 18
years old at the time of their marriage.
On January 10, 1998 I talked to my dad, Arthur
Hall, to get as much information about Uncle Dave down on paper. He was a
good man but an odd-ball. He was a wood cutter. He used to sit outside and
eat bread which he had stufffed into his pants pockets.
He was crippled by a tree which fell while
he was working with his son Leonard. The tree kicked back as it fell and
impale the muscle in Dave's leg. He lay for hours under the tree until it
could be lifted off of him.
He worked for my grandpa James Hall on several
occasions and helped cut wood to be used for railroad ties. He was paid 50
cents per day and wanted him pay to be placed under his plate at dinner every
evening. Dad told me that the 50 cents " weighted down his pants so much
that Dave took them off and worked only in his shirttail." David was such
a tight wad, that he "rolled up his britches while working in the fields
to keep the saw briars from tearing them." Saw briars were long vines which
were filled with thorns about a sixteenth of an inch long. When a Mrs Hogg
came by and saw the scratches and blood running down Uncle Dave's leg she
suggested that he roll the pants down. Uncle Dave replied, "that ok, the
skin wil grow back, the pants won't."
Uncle Dave often came to stay and work for
Grandpa Hall. He would stay for a couple of weeks at a time. He would go
out and cut piles of wood. Dad didn't think Dave got along with Leonard's
wife, who was a Skaggs. They had one child, a girl.

Daniel Boone Hall, born April 16, 1853 in

Hall:
They called him Elick's lawyer. Dad said that
Daniel was the only one of Elick's boys who had any education. He was a
womenizer. Was going with one women whom he never slept with, according to
what he told dad. One day the stepfather of the women asked Uncle Dan, "
your not figuring on marrying her are you." When Dan she, well I think so,
the stepfather told him that, " I've lived in hell since marrying her mother."
Uncle Dan didn't marry her.
Dan's kids were Ally , Frank and Merle. Their
mother "lost her mind", after the kids grew up. She came back from the asylum
in Lexington several times and returned when they couldn't keep her at
home.
Uncle Dan worked as a carpenter. He died in
about 1944, while Dad was in Europe in the service. This was sometime before
Jim and Chloe Hall left Kentucky and moved to Indiana. Uncle Ben helped bury
him. Uncle Floyd had the record in the minutes of his
church.
Dan could jump up and click his heals 3 times
before he hit the ground. He was spry in his old age right up to just before
he died. He could dive into the creek bed and turn a flip before he hit the
water when he was well into his 70s. Dad had heard about it and didn't believe
it until he saw Dan do it. None of the young boys who swam at the creek in
Gates could match the performance.

Notes for Floyd Dee Hall:
Great-grandpa Floyd Hall was born in Letcher
County Kentucky in 1855 and moved to Rowan County with his parents in 1872.
Floyd received an original land grant in Rowan County which was surveyed
on April 18, 1901. This land was 100 acres on the North Fork of Triplett
Creek. This land grant is listed in a book which is available on the ancestor.com
website. This was undoubtedly the land in Munson, Kentucky on which he lived
when he married Mary Burton, his third wife. He died in 1938 and was buried
on the point at the mouth of Big Perry near Gates, Kentucky. This was at
the Northeast corner of the intersection of U.S. route #60 and Kentucky State
Road #799, which is known as Big Perry Road. His grave and that of Uncle
Dave Hall was moved in 1988 to Hay Cemetery, which is on Haldeman Road. A
construction project to widen U.S. 60 necessitated the removal and
reburial.
This road had previously gotten Floyd Hall
into trouble. When the highway was originally constructed, Floyd was forced
to sell part of his land through condemnation proceedings for the highway
right-of-way. He had agreed also to allow the removal of gravel from parts
of the creek to be used in construction. The construction workers however
removed gravel from a portion of the creek which would have changed the flow
and erode his land. Floyd came to the creek with his shotgun to stop them.
The Sheriff was called and apparently the authories were preparing to take
Floyd to jail. Dad told me that Floyd came to Grandpa James Hall's house
on Big Perry crying to get him to help with his bond. The charges were dropped
and the construction workers took the gravel from where Floyd told
them.
Floyd and Grandpa Jim helped to move a family
who had no money. Floyd told Grandpa, "I'll get
something."
Floyd shot left-handed. He was a skilled
self-taught carpenter, whose special skill, according to dad, was making
wooden sleds. These were used to carry supplies and were made entirely out
of wood. Dad said that Floyd would drill 2 inch holes in the wood with a
hand auger.
According to dad and Uncle Woodrow Hall, Floyd
liked to tell Daniel Boone stories. A conversation between him and his children
always included Boone. One tale involved the time Daniel was trapped in a
loft in a house which had been captured and overrun by Indians. With the
Indians comfortably situated in the lower area of the house, Daniel appeared
to be finished. As night fell, Boone was determined to escape. He suddenly
jumped from the loft and let out a blood-curdling yell. Having taken the
Indians completely by surprise, Boone was able to run through the door and
make his escape into the night.
Floyd also liked to talk about the old relatives
after supper was finished. Uncle Woodrow also mentioned that Floyd was known
for his generosity and no one ever went away hungry. Floyd donated the land
at the mouth of Big Perry for a school site.
Afon had
told Underwood that if he sent his hired guns away that there would be a
truce. Underwood complied but soon thereafter, his son was shot and killed
in ambush while he was plowing a field. Underwood call on Grandpa Floyd to
go to ask "his guards", or hired gunmen to return. Floyd told Dad that the
guards refuse to go back. The hired men told Floyd that they had to crawl
away on their hands and knees to get out alive the previous time. When grandpa
told Underwood that his "guards" he refused to return, he told Grandpa, "well,
I'm a dead man then." Grandpa told Dad that the Holbrooks came back and shot
out Underwood's eyes. Dad thinks that this occurred near the Rowan-Carter
County border on Samp's Bear Hill. Dad told me that one of Underwood's guards
who had crawled away and refused to return was Claibe
Jones.

Ed Samuel married Susanna Hall, the daughter
of Elick Hall on September 16, 1882. Grandpa Jim Hall told my dad Arthur
that Ed ran a grocery store in Morehead that was owned in partnership by
Floyd Hall, my great-grandfather and Uncle Dan Hall. Both owners were brothers
of the bride, Susanna Samuel. Dad said that Uncle Dan's part of the business
apparently was just providing the brains of the operation. On several occasions,
Uncle Dan was "running to Floyd to get more money to run the store." Floyd
sent his son and my grandfather, Jim Hall to find out what was happening
to the money that he was pouring into the store. Grandpa found out that Ed
was taking the receipts and using the money for his personal expenses. When
he needed more inventory for the store he would send Uncle Dan to get more
money from Floyd. When Floyd found out what was happening, he stopped sending
money. The store "didn't last very long after that," said
Dad.

Notes for Joseph Hall:
Dad told me that Uncle Joe and Aunt Betty
ran a grocery store at one time. They lived in Portsmouth, Ohio for a while
and moved back to Gates, Kenutucky in 1930. Later they lived on Christy Creek.
Uncle Joe died while living on North Fork (of Triplett
Creek).
Everett the oldest boy ran a whisky store
after Uncle Joe died.
Jess was lazy and ran around with the town
drunks. Jess wouldn't do "a damned thing." He bummed his way and lived off
of Everett. Betty would invite dad in for a beer and he used to sit in back
and talk to her.
Everett married Bert Stanley's daughter. Bert
Stanley had cut the throat of Adolph Black the fiance of my aunt Vernie Hall.
She never married and died in the 1930', single and broken hearted. Adolph's
murderer was sent to jail for some time.
Bought Alley Hall's store when he came back
from Ohio. In Gates. Built a new building and while closed down he lost his
customers. George Molton built 1/2 mile away and had cheaper prices. John
Molton ran the store which store which sold grocery and feed. It was just
above Gates toward Haldeman. Sold it to Noah Kegley. One of his daughters
ran it for a while and quite after she married.
Uncle Joe was a tight-wad. He used to buy
beans from GM Hall that he called "little tight beans." He meant beans were
close together in the hull. He wouldn't buy anything at normal price and
his store prices were high.

KENTUCKY KILLING
Louisville, Dec. 02 --- A special dispatch
to the Courier Journal from Catlettsburg says: Oct. 20, in Floyd County,
KY., ANDY HALL was shot and k illed by men concealed in brush. A boy with
HALL recognized the man who did the shooting as RICHARD VANCE. A few minutes
later VANCE, ANDY SLOAN , and LINVILLE HIGGINS were seen near the scene of
the murder, all armed with guns. Yesterday the father of HALL swore out warrants
against the three men and they were arrested and sent to jail to await trial
for murder. The three men are in the employ of revenue officials as spies
on moonshiners in the mountains and procurers of witnesses against
them.
Andy
Hall was shot and killed by Dick Vance in retaliation for Talt and Andy and
Uriah Bates attempting to kill Vance. This occurred while the parties were
returning from Catlettsburg, and a Federal Court appearance. From the

Willie Hall, Lee's father in-law went to
Cattlesburg 1916-1917 to help defend Lee JR. in a Moonshining case in federal
court there. While there he had to go to Ironton Ohio to get a Hotel, and
in the lobby of the hotel he had a confrontation with a man named Jim Fiddler,
the result of this confrontation was that Willie shot and killed Jim Fiddler.
Willie was tried for this murder but it was proven in court that Fiddler
was the agressor and also that he (Fiddler) was drunk, Willie was aquitted
of the charge. There was a warrent issued, and served on Lee JR. concerning
this incident. Officials of the Elkhorn Coal Company stepped in and and had
the charges against Lee JR. dropped or dismissed. One of the Officials who
went to Ironton to help clear up this situation was Son
Bowe.
