Descendants of John Miles

Notes

7. Isham Johnson Miles

Isham received some of Joseph CARTER II's estate and this is the only clue to Elizabeth's maiden name. Other CARTER searchers have concluded Isham married a CARTER daughter to justify his being included in Joseph's will. Isham's son Joseph was the administrator of Joseph Carter's will and was also a guardian of Priscilla CARTER. Joseph CARTER II wife had already died and probably Isham's wife, Elizabeth died before 1814 or she would have been mentioned in the settlement of Joseph's estate. See Bedford Co. VA Will Bk. 5, p. 23.
I am assuming Priscilla CARTER was one of Joseph Carter's children, legally requiring a guardian after his death.
Joseph Miles is the grandson of Joseph Carter II.
Joseph Miles is mentioned as guardian when she marries Joseph's Brother-In-Law, Julius H. SAUNDERS, 26 April 1824 in Bedford Co. VA. Surety was Edward MILES. The 1814 record of Isham receiving a share of Joseph CARTER's estate is the last record I have for Isham. ************************************************************************** The children of Isham MILES were found in the court records of a suit brought by Armistead MILES in behalf of the rest of Williams heirs against Nancy Grubb who is a sister of William and Armistead.
William Miles was married earlier in life but prior to his death all of his family had died. The suit list includes all of his then living siblings or their heirs if they were deceased. The suit began in Pulaski Co. KY in 1843 took several years to resolve. There may have been more children than are shown but were not included if they died in infancy without heirs. The heirs are listed in Deed Book 14, pages 285 & 286 at the time of the sale of the property November 1850. It is mentioned Nancy Grubb was removed as an heir by a court action in the fall term of the 1847 court.
A researcher named Robert S. Waddle left this information in a family folder in Pulaski Co. Library in Somerset, KY. It also mentions something not found in the court records that the children were from 2 marriages. It listed John, Elizabeth and Juda (Judith) as whole blood siblings of William. The rest are half blood. Deeds carried the first names of the 2 wives but other researchers work allowed me to find the maiden names of both Elizabeth Carter and Judith Hatcher. ************************************************************************** The family records found in Charles City Co. VA Records 1737-1774 by Benjamin B. Weisiger III VRef 929.3755 C38r found in the Virginia Room of the Roanoke, VA Public Library in December of 1993 are the basis for Isham's activities before the 1768 Cumberland Co. VA tith record.
In the book mentioned above regarding Charles City Co. records, on: *************************************************************************** p. 91, 2 July 1768 Isham Miles of Cumberland Co. to Samuel Harwood, Jr. of Wyan Oak, Charles City Co.,. Gent., for 155 pounds, 180 acres in Westover Parish given to said Miles by will of his grandfather John Miles, dated 23 April 1748. Wit: Robert Harrison, Philip Moody, John Southall
Signed: Isham Miles Recorded 2 Nov. 1768 **************************************************************************** This will ties William, Isham, and John together as grandchildren of John Miles As they are living together in Cumberland Co. with their mother Ann and step father John Brown, it is apparent they are all brothers as well.
A 1768 Cumberland Co tithe list shows the three boys listed directly under John Brown their stepfather. Their mother Ann is still alive and probably has several more children by John Brown as John Miles (bro. of Isham) mentions a neice in his will that must be the dau. of a half sister thru John Browns being the father. *************************************************************************** The 1810 VA census shows a blank line for a first name of a MILES that turns out to be Isham although nearly unreadable on the microfilm. The family is still in existance with several small children still in the household: males 2 (0-10), 2 (10-16), 1 (16-26), 1 (45+)
female 1 (16-26), 1 (45+)
Isham and his wife are listed as being 45+ years of age.
One boy between 10 and 16 is probably Armistead who was born 1796.
As Isham disappears from county records about 1814, the small children in that family must have been raised by some other relative. Joseph was given all family possessions and land prior to Isham's death making me think Isham was living with him at the time of his death about 1815 after John Carter left part of his estate to Isham for his infant children because Elizabeth must have already died.
Isham had 2 wives and property deeds carried the names of his wives. The first was Judith and she must have died before 1779. I found this court record. ************************************************************************** 9 Feb. 1779. Isham Miles of Buckingham County Virginia - by deed of gift - convey to his children, John Miles, William Miles, Elizabeth Miles, and Judith Miles one negro girl and her increase to be equally divided between said children when daughter Judith shall arrive at the age of fifteen years.
Wit: Bartlett Thompson
Susanna Thomson
Proved by witnesses thereto and ordered recorded. 28 June 1779.
--Cumberland County Deed Book 6, pp. 25, 26. **************************************************************************** I also found a substantial amount of material regarding the MILES family in a book in the Raney collection in the Virginia Room of the Roanoke, VA Public Library. Included there are many marriage records that mention Isham as the parent of the Miles being married, which ties correctly into the notes found regarding William MILES 1843 heirs found in a family folder at the Somerset Public Library, Pulaski Co., KY.

Judith Hatcher

The IGI files of Salt Lake City records mention a record of marriage in St. James Parish, Goochland, VA between Isham Miles and Judith Hatcher.
This was provided to SLC by Charles Philip Hatcher.
I have received a family group sheet in response to my Temple Ordinance Indexes Request submitted by Mrs. D. A. Lamoreaux, 158 No. Main Street, Salt Lake City, Utah. The parents are listed as Henry Hatcher and Susanna Williamson.
The source of the marriage is taken from a record abreviated as follows: ************************************************************************* F Va, P3a, pt. 2(7857)Bk. 1,
pg. 172(Will of Eliz. Hatcher)
F.Va clb, pt. 1(7313)
Deed 1778
************************************************************************ I have found a Powhatan Co. will for Elizabeth Hatcher which reads as follows: Will Bk. 1, pg. 172 5 May 1789 Will of Elizabeth Hatcher of Powhatan Co.
To my neice Judith Miles, 3 negroes: Fann and her two children Nancy and Joseph Wilson; but if she dies without lawful heirs, then to my nephew Benjamin Hatcher, son of Frederick, and my 2 neices Susannah Thompson and Elizabeth Thompson
To my niece Elizabeth Miles, a negro woman, Nan
Executor: my friend John Hobson, son of William Hobson Wit: Frederick Hatcher, Judith Moody, Ann (X) Gordon Recorded 17 Sept. 1789 *************************************************************************
I have not yet found the deed source document.
The above will provides proof of Judith's maiden name being Hatcher.

10. William Miles

William Miles was married earlier in life but prior to his death all of his family had died. He may have died without a will as Armistead and other heirs brought a civil suit against Nancy Grubb to get their share of his estate.
He died in Pulaski Co. KY in 1843. There may have been more siblings than are shown but were not included if they died in infancy without heirs. The heirs are listed in Deed Book 14, pages 285 & 286 at the time of the sale of the property November 1850. Nancy Grubb was excluded in the settlement of the will by a court action in the fall term of the 1847 Pulaski Co. KY court. Nancy may have been living on William's land and not willing to have the other heirs share in the sale of William's property. Only Guessing.

11. Elizabeth Miles

7!Elizabeth is mentioned in the estate settlement for William Miles in Somerset KY in 1847 as a Hudgens. She must have been alive or her children would have been listed. If she had not been alive and no children existed she would not have been listed at all. There are several Elizabeth Hudgens living in the Robertson Co. TN area and it is not possible to choose which one may be her family.

Elizabeth Carter

Isham received some of Joseph CARTER II's estate and this is the only clue to Elizabeth's last name. Other CARTER searchers have concluded Isham married a CARTER daughter to justify his being included in Joseph's will. Isham's son Joseph was the administrator of Joseph's will and was also a guardian of Priscilla CARTER. Joseph CARTER II wife had already died and probably Isham's wife, Elizabeth had also died or she would have been mentioned in the settlement of Joseph's estate.
I am assuming Priscilla CARTER was one of Joseph's children legally requiring a guardian. Joseph gives his consent when she marries Joseph's Brother-In-Law, Julius H. SAUNDERS, 26 April 1824 in Bedford Co. VA. Surety was Edward MILES.

13. Nancy Miles

In 1845 Nancy Grubb was named as the defendant in a suit brought by Armistead and his brothers and sisters. It is not known what arrangements were made for Nancy but she was excluded from the sharing of the proceeds from the sale of William Miles property and estate. The court appointed an overseer to carry out the orders of the court such as posting notice of the sale in advance of the sale to insure the heirs would get good prices for the goods and property. The list of heirs was found in a family folder in the Somerset Public Library, Pulaski Co, KY but it differed slightly with those listed in the court records found to date.

8. Thomas Miles

Thomas is not listed in the book written from the fragments of Charles City Co. VA records. The reason I am listing him as a son of John Miles is because of the four significant names appearing in the 1774 Cumberland Co. VA marriage record for Thomas. ***************************************************************************** MILES, Thomas Nanny PATTERSON M.B. 15 February 1774 Surety: John Brown Note: Daughter of Gideon Patterson ( William Miles
Teste ( John Miles ***************************************************************************** Isham purchased land from GIDEON PATTERSON Feb. 27, 1769 in Cumberland Co. after selling his property that was a gift from his grandfather John Miles in a will dated 1748. The sale was recorded in the above book written from fragments of Charles City Co. VA records.
The father, John Miles 'the younger', died abt. 1750 while he had infant children and his wife Ann remarried John Brown. Ann was alive when John Brown mentioned her in his will in April 1807. I had anticipated she was dead because Judith Miles, orphan of John Miles, chooses Mordecai Debnam as her guardian. John Brown, the stepfather, ISHAM, WILLIAM and JOHN MILES, all appear to be living on the same property as they are listed in sequence in a 1768 Cumberland Co. VA tithe list. Although too young (under 16) to be included in the tax list Thomas seems to be living with them. Gideon Patterson is seen to be a neighbor in the same tithe list. This is how Thomas and Nanny/Nancy must get acquainted. His stepfather, John Brown, cares for the Surety for Thomas marriage. The children of Thomas marriage were supplied by Pat Westlake, 11153 Bellflower, Fountain Valley, CA 92708 and her sources are listed below. !Sources as follows:

Nanny Patterson

Nanny was the Daughter of Gideon Patterson who sold land to Isham Miles in 1768-1769 in Cumberland Co. He appears in a 1768 Cumberland Co. VA tithe list along with John Brown, William Miles, Isham Miles and John Miles. Her father's also name appears in the 1774 Cumberland Co. VA marriage record.
