2 CONT My father was a hard worker and was very concerned about being a good provider. He was a memb
2 CONC er of the Masons and he felt organized religion was wrong by definition. It required money t
2 CONC o support the ministers and the church buildings. He felt strongly about God and right and wr
2 CONC ong. The bible is studied and memorized by members of the Masons as part of their membership.
2 CONT Dad worked long hours and was not remembered as an affectionate father. He did surprise me wi
2 CONC th gifts on several occasions such as a rubber ball attached with a rubber band to a paddle t
2 CONC hat I never mastered. Another was a double cone shaped piece of wood that was to be spun wit
2 CONC h a string attached to the ends of 2 sticks. I mastered the last one but still feel my coordi
2 CONC nation or reflexes must have been poor as I couldn't master the ball and paddle.
2 CONT Dad was in the CCC in his early years and then went to Chicago to become a refrigeration repa
2 CONC irman and pipefitter. Ice cream was not available until that time. The ice cream company he w
2 CONC orked for was Meadow Gold and they placed freezers in stores around the city of Chicago at th
2 CONC eir expense to allow the sale of ice cream for the first time. Prior to this ice cream was ma
2 CONC de by hand turning a crank using ice and salt to make brine colder than 32 degrees. Ammonia g
2 CONC as was used as the coolant in the compressors and frequently leaked into the store and cause
2 CONC d grief.  The union in Chicago was a closed shop arrangement meaning the union members ha
2 CONC d a high salary and was the highest in the nation in the 1950's.
2 CONT After the start of WW II, our family moved into a trailer after we had been living at 9805 Mi
2 CONC nick Ave., in Oaklawn, IL. We loaded everything into the trailer and began the first of man
2 CONC y moves around the Chicago area. We once took the trailer to MO for a visit. on the way bac
2 CONC k to Chicago we took my grandfather Shelmadine to Moline, IL to visit his sister Net (Shelmad
2 CONC ine) Timm, relatives that lived on a steep hill next to the John Deer estate. The car could h
2 CONC ardly make it up the hill with the weight of the trailer.
2 CONT Dad couldn't get work after a period of time around Chicago so went out Salt Lake where he go
2 CONC t spinal meningitis and collapsed in the bath tub. The land lady was very big and strong an
2 CONC d got him out of the tub when she heard him fall to keep him from drowning.
2 CONT Our Dr. told Mom she had to get out there or he would die due to lack of care. She found some
2 CONC one to take care of us and left. Turns out he was in quarantine and she could only sit outsid
2 CONC e his door. She probably lived in his apartment and looked after him after he came out of th
2 CONC e hospital.
2 CONT Back in Chicago only a couple of days after Mom left a letter arrived from my Aunt Doris Marc
2 CONC h offering to help out taking us kids, if worst came to worst, so she could go to Utah. Thi
2 CONC s woman got Nola and I in a car going thru Macon MO on their way to somewhere. I had to hol
2 CONC d Nola on my lap the whole trip.
2 CONT They dropped us off late one night as a surprise to Vernice. We stayed with her from mid wint
2 CONC er till early summer and attended the 7th grade at school in Macon. This was the old high sch
2 CONC ool where Mom attended. Dad got work finally in Washington on the Hanford Project (atomic bom
2 CONC b plant construction). Mom decided we were a family and just went out against Dad's wishes t
2 CONC o Washington where he got us an apartment in Yakima 70 miles from his work. He was in a car p
2 CONC ool that traveled there every day. The job was highly classified and he had to have a top sec
2 CONC ret security clearance to work there. The construction crew could only work in so many of th
2 CONC e several buildings and on only so many floors of each building to keep them from knowing wha
2 CONC t they were working on. Each floor had canvas dividing the floor into 4 squares with worker
2 CONC s not allowed to move between squares or talk with others from the other parts of the buildin
2 CONC g.
2 CONT When this job was over, Dad was on the road again looking for another job. The 3 of us live
2 CONC d in Chelan Falls WA in a rented cottage, no insulation or plastered walls till mid winter
2 CONC . I attended 8th grade from the beginning of the year till just before Christmas when we trav
2 CONC eled to Bremerton, WA looking for work in the ship yards with no luck. We traveled to Pheoni
2 CONC x AZ and lived with Francis and Eva Jacobs, some long time friends from Chicago.
2 CONT The 4 room apartment was very crowded and after no luck finding a job, Mom rented an apartmen
2 CONC t near Indian School in Pheonix where I attended Franklin school to finish the 8th grade. I a
2 CONC rrived only months before the test on the Arizona Constitution which was required for me to g
2 CONC raduate. It was waved with the understanding I not go to high school in AZ.
2 CONT We returned to MO by bus to Flagstaff where blasting caused an unexpected landslide blockin
2 CONC g the mountain road delaying us for several hours. We got the train the next day back to Maco
2 CONC n where we rented an apartment from Mrs. Binder who lived on a road leading SW out of town
2 CONC . I carried the newspaper for several weeks just as the war was coming to a close and carrie
2 CONC d the special edition on VJ day when the Japanese surrendered and read all about atomic bomb
2 CONC s not knowing I would later haul them around while a radio operator on a crew of an Air Forc
2 CONC e C-124 cargo plane.
2 CONT Mom and Dad had a bitter struggle over where to live and Dad couldn't get a very good job a
2 CONC s a refrigeration repairman in Macon where they didn't break down very often. I was the reaso
2 CONC n I think as I had been in 9 schools since leaving Ok Lawn, IL. I was
2 CONT pretty messed psychologically from getting beat up by the class bulley in each school. I coul
2 CONC dn't keep from crying when picked on and embarrased myself in front of my classmates. It wa
2 CONC s the same all the way thru highschool.
2 CONT Dad finally left, probably against Mom's wishes to work in Chicago where his union membershi
2 CONC p guarrenteed him a high salary. Mom refused to leave Macon. He would come home every month a
2 CONC nd spend a long weekend before going back.
2 CONT Dad and Mom got a divorce in 1947 after the woman he was living with called at 3:00AM drunk a
2 CONC nd told Mom she was pregnant. I heard the phone and the next day saw Mom hit dad's hand in an
2 CONC ger as he was pulling on her apron string knot to untie it. He had tears in his eyes and Nol
2 CONC a and I knew something serious had happened. I was seen by those in town as an unfortunate ch
2 CONC ild being from a broken home. Dad wasn't very affectionate and I don't remember getting hug
2 CONC s or sitting on his lap and we hadn't seen much of him as he worked so much late at night
2 CONC . I knew he loved me from his letters and Mom didn't make any bad remarks about him to destro
2 CONC y our relationship. I wrote letters regularly at Mom's insistance and visited him and his sec
2 CONC ond wife, Mary, a couple of times in Chicago before graduating from high school. Dad sent chi
2 CONC ld support faithfully. He would send us funny papers (cartoons) rolled up from the Chicago pa
2 CONC pers rather regularly. As an adult I continued to stay close to him and write regularly. Afte
2 CONC r getting married, I attended the Univ. of MO and he sent money at the beginning of each seme
2 CONC ster to help make ends meet.
2 CONT This was well beyond what was expected and a demonstration of his love.
2 CONT Dad sent letters to Mom which were informational in nature but said more about his feelings t
2 CONC han they did inside I think. During the last years of Dad's life, Mom sent letters to him to
2 CONC o at a P.O. Box several miles from his home. Mom made it clear to me they never were intimat
2 CONC e after the divorce.
2 CONT In 1975 or so when Mom lived in Hamilton, Mo, she ended up with a house and mortgage she coul
2 CONC dn't pay monthly with her limited income.
2 CONT Dad would come back to Hamilton and even stayed at Mom's without Mary knowing the details (
2 CONC I think) and did repairs around the house as needed at least once a year. Mom and Dad still l
2 CONC oved each other but Mom wouldn't allow him to cheat on his second wife no matter what. I ha
2 CONC d the feeling there may have been some tender moments between them but very mild. Dad paid of
2 CONC f the mortgage and told Mom this house was to be hers untill it was sold and if anything wa
2 CONC s left after she died then the remaining money was to be passed on to Nola and me as our inhe
2 CONC ritance from him. He also mentioned that he could not control how his estate would be divide
2 CONC d and he could not leave anything in his will to Mom or us without a big upset to Mary. Mar
2 CONC y did not know anything about Dad's finances as he kept savings accounts several places accor
2 CONC ding to the information passed to me by Mom. Nola and I waved our legal rights of inheritanc
2 CONC e when we attended his funeral. I often wondered what Mary thought about our willingness to s
2 CONC ign that document.  Mary must have moved very quickly to have that ready for our signatures w
2 CONC ith only a couple of days to prepare.
2 CONT Dad felt his primary function was to be a good provider to his family.

2 CONC e was a little town called Axtel. My family lived about a mile north of Axtel near the Wabas
2 CONC h railroad, which always seemed so important. To get to our mail box we had to cross the trac
2 CONC k and walk about a quarter of a mile farther. One of the greates thrills was to wave at the e
2 CONC ngineers on those great trains. It was March 23, 1910 when I joined the family. There were al
2 CONC ready 3 big sisters, Eva, Beatrice, and Alice, and a brother, Ted. Another sister less than t
2 CONC wo years older than me and small for her age, Ellen, was about my size. The four older childr
2 CONC en were all red heads, various shades, and very attractive. Ellen was blond and I was dark sk
2 CONC inned and dark brown haired, often called black. We were called Blackie and Whitey by peopl
2 CONC e together in the baby carriage. Later Emma was born. She was little and had white hair, call
2 CONC ed cotton by those same people mentioned before. I remember seeing her as a little baby wit
2 CONC h white curls, asleep on the floor where we had been playing.
2 CONT Two years later Lou joined the family. She was a pretty little baby with black curly hair. Sh
2 CONC e made such a wonderful impression on this little kid called Clara, that as she grew olde
2 CONC r I often wished for more little sisters, but she was the last one. She is still living in In
2 CONC diana. I was 4 years older than Lou. When she was about 2, we were playing peek-a-boo, her i
2 CONC n her high chair by the dinning room table and I outside the window. Others of the family wer
2 CONC e not there at the time, busily occupied elsewhere. I can only imagine what happened as the l
2 CONC ast thing I remember was playing with her, the next, sitting on a chair by the table with a h
2 CONC urting chin with a bandage wrapped from that chin over the top of my head. I had no idea wha
2 CONC t had happened to me but later someone told me they found me black in the face, so my feet mu
2 CONC st have slipped from under me and landed my chin on the outside window ledge, locking my jaw
2 CONC s and putting an end to my life, had not my Mother pryed open my jaws with a table knife hand
2 CONC le, blew breath down my throat and brought me back to life again. Poor Mamma. That was the fi
2 CONC rst of several accidents that followed.
2 CONT In the barn lot I fell against a log with a knot on it and tore my knee open. That time I did
2 CONC n't know what happened and lifted the hem of my dress.
2 CONT I saw that awful gash and that's the last I remember for sometime.
2 CONT They said I wouldn't walk so they had to carry me to the house.
2 CONT The next thing I remember was sitting on the ground against something with a pillow under m
2 CONC y knee. Several years later having a ride in our doctors buggy as he came to check on my brot
2 CONC her who was recuperating from a ruptured appendix, seeing my knee he said, "If that had gon
2 CONC e a bit deeper you would have been crippled for life". He was a wonderful doctor. That time m
2 CONC y mother had taken care of my wound, no stitches were taken, he probably told her what to do
2 CONC , I really don't know. Soon after that Ellen and I were sitting atop posts of a new fence an
2 CONC d hearing a call from the house, somehow I tore open my hand on the barbed wire fence. No on
2 CONC e had called us they said, but any way Clara was in trouble again. Laying the skin together a
2 CONC fter properly bandaging, a piece of metal was placed against the hand to keep it flat open. A
2 CONC gain no stitches and I was later told by a doctor that had stitches been taken my hand woul
2 CONC d have been stiff and I wouldn't be able to write probably, or use it other ways.
2 CONT End of autobiography. ********************************************************************
2 CONT  Mom passed away April 4, 1997 after struggling with several illnesses since entering the hos
2 CONC pital in October of 1995 with anemia from internal bleeding in her colon.  After searching fo
2 CONC r the exact location for more than a week and about a dozen pints of blood to keep up with th
2 CONC e flow, a colonectomy was performed leaving the lower or last 12 inches of her colon allowin
2 CONC g her normal elimination. There were many trips to the hospital for a broken hip, heart attac
2 CONC k, pneumonia, totaling about 6 hospital visits.
2 CONT It was expected at first Mom would make it back to her apartment where she had moved in 198
2 CONC 6 after arriving from Hamilton, MO.
2 CONT Prior to her death Mom had been receiving medication for high blood pressure when suddenly he
2 CONC r heart rate dropped to 29-32 beats per minute on April 3 about 9:00AM. Mom refused to go th
2 CONC e hospital to be treated and went into a kind of slumbering conciousness. By 10:00PM she wa
2 CONC s resting peacefully and receiving high oxygen levels to help her sustain sufficient blood ox
2 CONC ygen.  She passed away the next morning about 9:30AM April 4. *******************************

2 CONT  Some of the things Mom mentioned to me during her life that let you know more about her.
2 CONT She told me as a little girl that her father had a gift of some sort that let him know and pr
2 CONC epare for the death of 2 of his daughters Eva and Alice. Grampa told Mom one of them would no
2 CONC t live to be an adult and the other wouldn't live much past getting married. This is more m
2 CONC y words than Mom's from my memory. Times were very bad about the time was 10 years old. She h
2 CONC ad to walk to Oak Grove School in the snow without shoes. I had heard this when I was very sm
2 CONC all and after getting in my teens I finally found out she wasn't walking the mile and 1/2 wit
2 CONC h bare feet but had several pairs of socks that were taken off to dry after getting to school
2 CONC .
2 CONT It was about 10 years of age, 1920, Mom told her mother that there would be a letter in the m
2 CONC ail box asking for her to come to town and live with a family while working for them doing ho
2 CONC usework etc. I think this was the Will family. When the letter was brought to her Mother, he
2 CONC r jaw dropped open in surprise at its contents. Mom left the farm never to return and felt i
2 CONC t was partly or mostly due to her parents not wanting her to return because it was another mo
2 CONC uth to feed. She felt unloved by her parents from that point on.
2 CONT Mom worked for several families, one of which was the Howell's who owned a dairy east of tow
2 CONC n about 2 miles. She worked there during high school. She had to walk to town to go to high s
2 CONC chool every day. One of the families were Miller's who were members of the Reorganized Churc
2 CONC h of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Church. Mom joined that church at about age 16.
2 CONT When Grampa died it was like the icing on the cake. He was so attached to his only boy, Ted
2 CONC , that he left the farm to him. The explanation I received was that Ted was having such a har
2 CONC d time making ends meet and all of the girls had husbands with good jobs. The girls didn't ne
2 CONC ed a share of the inheritance as bad as Ted did. The girls didn't get a dollar. This was on
2 CONC e more reason to feel unloved by her parents.
2 CONT Mom, Clara, left out being married and having a couple of kids in her autobiography. Dad, Nol
2 CONC an, went off to Chicago after dating Mom for some period of time. Now after being divorced fo
2 CONC r many years she told me she felt Dad wanted to get married real quick when he came back fro
2 CONC m Chicago on a visit. They got married the day after Christmas 1929. Mom felt he may have bee
2 CONC n escaping from a gal he got in trouble (pregnant) while living away in Chicago. They lived i
2 CONC n a rough neighborhood where gangsters lived and got shot frequently when I was born 11/26/19
2 CONC 31. Dad and Mom were boarding a streetcar that was very crowded when a man yanked Mom off bac
2 CONC kwards while she was very pregnant with me. Dad went after the man in protest and got hit i
2 CONC n the face with a pair of brass knuckles breaking Dad's jaw.

2 CONC e years.  He was born and raised in Macon County and had been a farmer all his life.

2 CONC . J.M. Elsea of Atlanta and five brothers, F. A. Miles of Oregon City, Oregon, J. D. Miles o
2 CONC f Atlanta, W. N. Miles of Jacksonville, A.B. Miles of Port Arthur, Texas and Mat L. of this c
2 CONC ity.
2 CONT Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church in Macon at 11 a.m. Monday morning, conducte
2 CONC d by Rev. W.R. Skinner.  Internment was in the Oakwood Cemetery.  The services at the grave w
2 CONC as under the auspices of the Masonic Order of which he was a member.

2 CONT Funeral Services Sunday For Mrs. Etta B. Miles
2 CONT Funeral services for Mrs. Etta B. Miles will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock  at th
2 CONC e First Baptist church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. J.E. Chappell.
2 CONT Mrs. Miles passed away Thrusday, February 7, 1929 after a lingering illness. She was 59 years
2 CONC , 5 months and 3 days old. Mrs. Miles was born in Macon County, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs
2 CONC . John Carnahan.
2 CONT Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Ernest March of Macon, Mrs. Johanna Poteet of Macon, an
2 CONC d Mrs. Doris Porter of Moberly; and three sons, Nolan Miles of Chicago, and William Miles an
2 CONC d Robert Miles of Macon. Her husband passed away a number of years ago.  Four Brothers, and o
2 CONC ne sister also survive. They are Will Carnahan of La Plata, and Al, Claud, and Ernest Carnaha
2 CONC n of Atlanta, and Miss Ada Carnahan of St. Louis.

2 CONT    Joseph D. Miles, well known Atlanta resident, passed away Friday evening about 6:00 at th
2 CONC e Grimm-Smith Hospital where he was taken yesterday afternoon to undergo an operation.  He wa
2 CONC s 79 years, 9 months and 24 days old.
2 CONT    Mrs. Miles was a life long resident of Macon County.  He was born east of Atlanta, Januar
2 CONC y 8, 1854.  Mr Miles was a prosperous farmer.  A few years ago he retired and he and his wif
2 CONC e moved to Atlanta.  Mrs. Miles passed away four months ago, July 3.(1933)
2 CONT    There are no children.  A brother, W. N. Miles of Jacksonville and a sister, Mrs. Margare
2 CONC t Elsea of Atlanta survive a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

2 CONT    Madison Logan Miles, son of William W. and Nancy Daugherty Miles, was born on a farm eas
2 CONC t of Atlanta, Macon County, Missouri, August 21, 1858; departed this life, at the home of Joh
2 CONC n W. Miles, Feb. 8, 1920, age 61 years, 5 months and 17 days.
2 CONT    In early manhood he made a profession of faith and united with the Mt. Tabor Baptist churc

2 CONT    Mat, as he was familiarly called, was the fifth son born to the above parents. The Miles a
2 CONC nd Daugherty families were among the early pioneers in this part of Missouri. They all came f
2 CONC rom Kentucky in 1838, and settled on the farms northeast of Atlanta.
2 CONT    Funeral services were conducted from the Baptist church, Wednesday morning, Feb. 11, by Re
2 CONC v. F.L. Hudson, after which the body was laid to rest in the La Plata cemetery. The Odd Fello
2 CONC ws lodge, of which deceased was member, held services at the grave.

2 CONT William N. Miles, a well known and successful stock dealer and farmer of Jacksonville, is on
2 CONC e of the progressive and successful business men of Randolph County. He was born near Atlanta
2 CONC , Macon County Mo., Nov. 6, 1864, and is a son of William A. and Nancy (Daugherty) Miles.
2 CONT William N. Miles was reared on his father's farm in Macon County and attended school at the o
2 CONC ld Oak Grove school house, near his home in that county. He remained at home with his fathe
2 CONC r on the farm until he was 22 years old. In 1887 he bought a farm of 120 acres east of Atlant
2 CONC a and engaged in farming and stock raising for himself.  In 1898 he moved to Atlanta and work
2 CONC ed in a store for E.O. Snow three years and for five years he was engaged in buying and shipp
2 CONC ing stock there.  He then came to Jacksonville and was with O.E. Snow here engaged in the dru
2 CONC g business for four and a half years and since that time he has been engaged in buying and sh
2 CONC ipping stock and also general farming and stock raising and feeding.  He owns two farms in Ja
2 CONC ckson township, one a farm of 100 acres located north of town, which is a well improved farm
2 CONC . He built two silos on this place in 1910 with the capacity of 100 tons each, and they hav
2 CONC e been filled each year since they were built.  One of his barns is designed on the circula
2 CONC r plan and is built around the silo.  The building is 40 feet in diameter with two wings 20X7
2 CONC 0 feet, extending from the main building.  This is one of the complete and interesting farm b
2 CONC uildings of Randolph County.  A 93 acre farm owned by Mr. Miles, west of Jacksonville, is a w
2 CONC ell improved place, and is devoted largely to pasture and feed lots for cattle and hogs, whic
2 CONC h he handles in connection with his business. He also has a mule barn in Jacksonville, 44X5
2 CONC 0 feet.
2 CONT Mr. Miles was one of the organizers of the Jacksonville Savings Bank and is now Vice-presiden
2 CONC t of that institution. He takes a commendable interest in public affairs and has served two y
2 CONC ears as mayor of Jacksonville, from 1914 to 1916. He has also been a member of the town boar
2 CONC d for eight years and has been street commissioner of Jacksonville.  He was the first to buil
2 CONC d hard surface walks in Jacksonville and has always taken a keen interest in the betterment a
2 CONC nd upbuilding of the town.
2 CONT Mr. Miles was married May 3, 1887, to Miss Clara E. Snow, daughter of Orla and Marilla Snow
2 CONC , natives of Macon County, MO. Mrs. Miles has been her husband's loyal helpmate throughout hi
2 CONC s career and no small measure of his success is due to her co-operation and assistance.
2 CONT Two children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Miles, as follows: Marilla, married A.W. Elliot
2 CONC , a druggist of Jacksonville, and Beulah, married M.A. Carter of Jacksonville. They also rais
2 CONC ed a boy, Hershel Snow, since he was six days old, his mother having died. He is now 18 year
2 CONC s old and graduated from the Moberly High School in the class of 1920.
2 CONT Mr. Miles is a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Christian Church. He is a Democrat.

1 NOTE !Armstead J. Miles was born in Franklin County, Virginia, and was a soldier of the War of 181
2 CONC 2.  Although but a boy in years he had the heart and spirit of a man and proved it by the ent
2 CONC husiasm he showed in the cause of his country on the field of battle.  He was married to a na
2 CONC tive Virginian, and in 1830 moved his family to Kentucky and located in Pulaski County, nea
2 CONC r Somerset, the County Seat.  In 1839 he moved to Macon County, Missouri and settled in the L
2 CONC yda Township.  Here they both lived the balance of their lives, and when they died were burie
2 CONC d in a private burial ground on their homestead, three miles Northeast of Atlanta, Mo. (whic
2 CONC h has been found) The homestead was located 1 1/2 miles north of Economy, west 1/2 miles to t
2 CONC he road north.  Go north 2/10 mile to house on left side (west side) of the road. The existin
2 CONC g buildings are in poor repair and may be gone when the reader visits the location.  If the d
2 CONC rive still exists you can walk to the grave site by keeping to the left and going thru a gat
2 CONC e in the fence.  Large fence posts once held a gate but not today.  From the gate the grave
2 CONC s are about 100 feet west and 100 yards south.
2 CONT The ground is overgrown in thorn bushes and thorn trees making walking painful. A very larg
2 CONC e oak tree stood about 50 feet south of the graves in 1996.
2 CONT There are several huge oak trees that were probably virgin timber never cut when the rest o
2 CONC f the property was cleared after being purchased in 1840 or so. *****************************

2 CONT It is spelled Armistead in the MILES FAMILY TREE.
2 CONT Armistead was probably named by his father for Isham's half brother named Armistead Brown.
2 CONT His son has a similar name spelled differently, Armstead Jr. in the MILES FAMILY TREE.
2 CONT The names of the children were provided in a family document found in a store window in Macon
2 CONC . The document had been found in a lawyers old office above the store.  The ages of the child
2 CONC ren was not available in that document but came from the 1850 MO census.

2 CONC esidence of his son, J.C. Miles in Adair county, Mo.  He was born in Buckingham county, VA, 1
2 CONC 5 October 1796.  At the age of sixteen years served his country six months in the war of 1812
2 CONC .  He was married 8 October 1821, to Elizabeth Arthur, to whom thirteen children were born, f
2 CONC ive daughters and eight sons, of whom six sons and one daughter survive. He emigrated to Pula
2 CONC ski county KY, in 1830.  In 1839 he removed to Macon county, Mo., then wilderness.  In 1857 h
2 CONC e lost his wife and since has lived the most of the time among his children.  He was buried o
2 CONC n the family burying ground beside his companion.

2 CONT After pondering this for some time, I concluded there is a stronger possibility someone recor
2 CONC ded Elizabeth's death date in error than allowing the tomb stone to contain an error.  The sa
2 CONC me stone was used for both Armstead and Elizabeth so Armstead's information was probably th
2 CONC e last information to be added to the stone.  There is of course some likelyhood the stone wa
2 CONC s purchased for both of them well after their deaths but there is no way of knowing at this t

2 CONT    Mrs. Marguerite Steele, 88, of Atlanta died Friday at 10:30 a.m. in the Loch Haven Nursin
2 CONC g Home in Macon, where she had been a patient since Aug. 30, 1984. Before that time, she ha
2 CONC d resided from October 1977 until August 1984 in the Clarence Nursing Home. Funeral service
2 CONC s were held this afternoon at the Elliot Funeral Home in Atlanta with Bob Schofield, pastor o
2 CONC f the Clarence Christian Church, officiating.  Burial was in the Mt. Tabor Cemetery east of A
2 CONC tlanta.
2 CONT    Mrs. Steele was born Oct. 24, 1896 east of Atlanta, the daughter of John Matthew and Marga
2 CONC ret Miles Elsea.  She married Samuel H. Steele in Macon on April, 27, 1921, and he preceded h
2 CONC er in death on July 12, 1959.  Most of her early married life was spent in Kansas City wher
2 CONC e she was employed by the Avon Products Company.  In 1955 she and her husband retired and mov
2 CONC ed to Atlanta where she was a long time member of the Atlanta Baptist Church, its Amoma Sunda
2 CONC y School Class and the WMU of the church.  At the time of her death, she was a member of th
2 CONC e Clarence Christian Church.
2 CONT    Surviving are four grandchildren,Vickie Eichof of Butler, Ohio, Valerie Boyer of Mansfield
2 CONC , Ohio, Greg Ateele who is serving in England with the United States Air Force, and Vanessa S
2 CONC teele of Butler, Ohio; two great-grandchildren, Jayson Boyer and Desha Boyer; two nieces, Gen
2 CONC eva Means of Atlanta and Mary Alice Wheatcraft of Brookfield; and a nephew, J. W. Elsea of Ja
2 CONC cksonville, Fla. She was preceded in death by her husband; her son, Sherwood Elsea Stelle wh
2 CONC o died on March 23, 1974; two brothers, Gilbert Elsea and Arzwell Elsea; four sisters, Anna L

2 CONT In early 1800's settlers headed west to seek their fortune via the Santa Fe, California and O
2 CONC regon trails stopped in Westport to outfit their wagons before continuing the long journey t
2 CONC o the western territories.
2 CONT The town also played a role in the Civil War. In October of 1864, Union Commanders laid plan
2 CONC s for the Battle of Westport, which came to be known as the Gettysburg of the West. Confedera
2 CONC te Cannon fire claimed many of Westport's buildings, but the Union troops emerged victorious.

2 CONC . Bunch, of Macon County, a daughter of John Bunch. Mrs. Miles spent her life previous to he
2 CONC r marriage in Macon County, and both she and her husband are members of the Old School Baptis
2 CONC t Church. Mr Miles was one of the world-renowned "forty-niners," making an overland trip to C
2 CONC alifornia in company with Stephen Wilson and many others. He went to that state with an ox te
2 CONC am, and while there, engaged in mining and teaming, and was very successful. At the end of el
2 CONC even months he left the land of gold and returned home by way of Old Mexico, across the gul
2 CONC f to New Orleans, thence to St. Louis and home.

2 CONT James C. Miles was born in Bedford County, Old Virginia, July 1, 1827.  His parents, shortl
2 CONC y afterwards, moving to Pulaski County, Kentucky, and later on, when he was fourteen, to Lyd
2 CONC a Township, Macon County.
2 CONT The "gold fever" of '49 caught him in its grip and in that year he crossed the plains to th
2 CONC e blue Sacrament Valley, driving an ox wagon, which as he used to say, he did not ride in i
2 CONC t for more than a quarter mile during the whole tedious Journey.  The prospects there were no
2 CONC t sufficiently attractive for him to remain, however, and he returned home in the fall of 185
2 CONC 0, bringing with him something to show for his pains.
2 CONT September 2, 1852 he was married to Miss Ruth E. Shelton of Knox County and to this union te
2 CONC n children were born, five of whom still live.
2 CONT He united with the Primitive Baptist Church about 1872 and on June 13 of that same year his w
2 CONC ife died.  On January 16, 1874 he was married to Miss M.N. Bunch of La Plata who survives him
2 CONC .  The children left to mourn his loss are : Mrs. Mary Lee, Atlanta, Mrs. Maxey Begole, Gibbs
2 CONC , Medley S. Miles Hurdland, Francis M. Miles, Pueblo, Colorado and Mrs. Jennie Barr, South Da
2 CONC kota.
2 CONT Mr. Miles was one of twelve children, four brothers still living; S.A. Miles, Portland, Orego
2 CONC n, John S. Miles, Kirksville, Missouri and F.M. and Albern Miles of La Plata.
2 CONT Funeral services were held March 1, Moore's Chapel, conducted by Elder George Edwards and int
2 CONC ernment made in the Steele Cemetery.

2 CONT In the year of 1897, June 20th, Mr. Miles was married to Mrs. Lucy Eveling Narriob if Carrikk
2 CONC tibm MO., who survives him. Nine grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren also survive.
2 CONT Funeral services were held from the Christian church yesterday afternoon at 2:30, conducted b
2 CONC y the pastor, Rev. J.L. Shoemaker.

2 CONT William Miles was married earlier in life but prior to his death all of his family had died
2 CONC . The suit list includes all of his then living siblings or their heirs if they were deceased
2 CONC . The suit began in Pulaski Co. KY in 1843 took several years to resolve. There may have bee
2 CONC n more children than are shown but were not included if they died in infancy without heirs. T
2 CONC he heirs are listed in Deed Book 14, pages 285 & 286 at the time of the sale of the propert
2 CONC y November 1850. It is mentioned Nancy Grubb was removed as an heir by a court action in th
2 CONC e fall term of the 1847 court.
2 CONT A researcher named Robert S. Waddle left this information in a family folder in Pulaski Co. L
2 CONC ibrary in Somerset, KY. It also mentions something not found in the court records that the ch
2 CONC ildren were from 2 marriages. It listed John, Elizabeth and Juda (Judith) as whole blood sibl
2 CONC ings of William. The rest are half blood.  Deeds carried the first names of the 2 wives but o
2 CONC ther researchers work allowed me to find the maiden names of both Elizabeth Carter and Judit

2 CONC ************************** The 1810 VA census shows a blank line for a first name of a MILE
2 CONC S that turns out to be Isham although nearly unreadable on the microfilm. The family is stil
2 CONC l in existance with several small children still in the household: males 2 (0-10), 2 (10-16)
2 CONC , 1 (16-26), 1 (45+)
2 CONT female 1 (16-26), 1 (45+)
2 CONT Isham and his wife are listed as being 45+ years of age.
2 CONT One boy between 10 and 16 is probably Armistead who was born 1796.
2 CONT As Isham disappears from county records about 1814, the small children in that family must ha
2 CONC ve been raised by some other relative.  Joseph was given all family possessions and land prio
2 CONC r to Isham's death making me think Isham was living with him at the time of his death about 1
2 CONC 815 after John Carter left part of his estate to Isham for his infant children because Elizab
2 CONC eth must have already died.
2 CONT Isham had 2 wives and property deeds carried the names of his wives. The first was Judith an
2 CONC d she must have died before 1779.  I found this court record. *******************************

2 CONT In 1937, when he bore the distinction of being the oldest Confederate veteran present at th
2 CONC e celebration of the 75th anniversary of the battle of Antietam, he represented the South i
2 CONC n a triple handclasp with a Union veteran and President Franklin D. Roosevelt. At that time
2 CONC , he recalled having been severely wounded in the legs, being discharged because of his injur
2 CONC ies. However, he recovered and reenlisted in Company B of the 21st Virginia Cavalry, servin
2 CONC g throughout the war.
