Collins Family Obituaries

William Porter Collins, son of James Mallory and Parmelia Ann Collins was born September 4, 1859 at Macon County, Missouri and departed this life at his home in Wallace, Kansas, on July 10, 1946 at the age of 86 years, 10 months and 6 days.

He grew to manhood in Macon County, Missouri. On August 13, 1885, he was united in marriage to Martha E. Hickman. To this union, three children were born; Wilbur, Rosa and Elmer. Both sons preceded him in death.

He and his wife made their home in Missouri until 1887 when they came west and homesteaded in Thomas County, Kansas. He lived on their homestead until he had used most of his strength in hard toil and labor, fighting a fight all pioneers had to. In 1939, he retired and moved to Brewster, Kansas. And later in 1941, he moved to Wallace, Kansas where he resided until death.

He had been sick for several years, never complaining and always cheerful, patiently waiting for the time to come when all suffering would end.

He was a faithful and loving companion and a devoted father.

He leaves to mourn his death, an aged wife of the home, one daughter, Mrs. Rosa Kear and son-in-law, Harry Kear, of Brewster; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ruth Collins of Wallace and two brothers, Tom, of Kansas City and John, of Orange, California; one sister, Mrs. Mattie Ross, of California; 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, several nephews and nieces and a host of friends.

MR. W.P. COLLINS DIED AT WALLACE LAST WEDNESDAY

Aged Resident Passed Away After Long Illness.

Services Held Friday Afternoon at Koons Funeral Home

Mr. William P. Collins, aged resident of Wallace, passed away last Wednesday morning at his home in that city after a long illness. He was 86 past.

Funeral services were held last Friday afternoon at the Koons Funeral Home in this city, with Rev Norman, of Winona, in charge. Interment was made in the Winona Cemetery.

Surviving are his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Harry Kear, of Brewster; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ruth Collins, Wallace; two brothers, Tom, of Kansas City; and John, of Orange, California; one sister, Mrs. Mattie Ross, of California; 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Also numerous nephews and nieces.

Mr. Collins moved to the Wallace community in 1941. He was born on September 4, 1859, at Macon County, Missouri. On August 13, 1885, he was united in marriage to Martha E. Hickman and to this union three children were born. Two sons, Wilbur and Elmer, preceded him in death.

Mr. Collins homesteaded in Missouri until 1887 when they came west and took up a homestead in Thomas County, which was his home until he moved to Wallace, after living a few years in Brewster.

He was a kind man, who suffered greatly in his last few years. He was a devoted father and a faithful and loving companion and a good neighbor, who was well-liked by all who knew him.

Martha Collins, Area Resident Since 1887, Dies

Mrs. Martha Emily Collins, who would have been 99 years old on Dec. 16, died at Good Samaritan Center Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Collins had been a resident of this area since 1887 and was the mother of Mrs. Rosa Kear of Brewster and grandmother of Mrs. Roy Smith of Goodland.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Collins will be held Friday afternoon at 2:00 (CST), at the Methodist Church in Winona and burial will be in the Winona Cemetery. the body will lay in state at Sage Chapel in Goodland from 2:00 until 8:00 PM, Thursday.

Mrs. Collins was a member of the Presbyterian Church and a former member of the Royal Neighbors. She was the daughter of Thomas and Anna Hickman, born Dec. 16, 1864, in Macon County, Missouri. She was married to William Porter Collins on August 13, 1885 and the couple homesteaded in Thomas County, 14 miles south of Brewster in the spring of 1887.

Mr. Collins died in 1946. They had moved to Brewster in 1939 and then to Wallace in 1941. Mrs. Kear is the only one of three children surviving.

OBITUARY EMILY COLLINS

Martha Emily Collins was born to Thomas and Ann Hickman, December 16, 1864, in Macon County, near Moberly, Missouri and passed away at The Good Samaritan Center in Goodland, Kansas, December 10, 1963, at the age of 98 years, 11 months and 24 days.

She was married to William Porter Collins on August 13, 1885. To this union three children were born; Wilbur Leon, Elmer Vernon and a daughter Rosa Lee Kear, of Brewster, Kansas. Wilbur and Elmer preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughter, Rosa and son-in-law, Harry Kear of Brewster, Kansas, 14 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, 23 great-great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

Mr. and Mrs. Collins came to Thomas County in March, 1887 and settled on a homestead 14 miles south of Brewster, Kansas. They retired from the farm in 1939, and moved to Brewster and in 1941, moved to Wallace, Kansas.

Mr. Collins passed away on July 10, 1946 and in 1947, she went to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Kear. She lived with them as long as she could be cared for in their home, and has since been cared for at The Good Samaritan Center in Goodland, Kansas. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and a former member of the Royal Neighbors.

Mrs. Collins, one of the early pioneers, always willingly helped in sickness and distress. She was a good neighbor and friend to all. Mrs. Collins mother died when she was 13 years of age and then she lived with an aunt.

Services were held in the Methodist Church at Winona, Kansas and conducted by Reverend Orvan Keller, an old friend of the family. Don Crumbaker sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Beyond The Sunset". Pallbearers were Lawrence Collins, Chester Collins, James Collins, Elmer Collins, Murray Kear and Roy Smith. Interment was in the Winona Cemetery.

WILBUR COLLINS PASSED AWAY SATURDAY MORNING
Well-Known Resident Taken After Long Illness. Funeral Services At Wallace.

Mr. Wilbur Collins, a resident of Wallace County for the past 13 years, died at his farm home early last Saturday morning. He had been in failing health for over two years and little hope had been held for his recovery for about two weeks.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 Monday afternoon at the Wallace school auditorium with Rev. Harvadine, of Winona, in charge. Interment was made in the Wallace Cemetery.

Surviving are, besides his wife, ten children; Lawrence, James, Chester, Elmer, Bobby, Freddy, Doris and Irene, of the home; Mrs. Clyde Lock of Wallace; and Mrs. Earl Hogan, of Kit Carson, Colo. Also seven grand-daughters; his aged parents, of Brewster; one sister, Mrs. Harry Kear, of Brewster; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mr. Collins was born in Macon County, Missouri on November 26, 1886. at an early age he moved with his parents to Thomas County, Kansas, where he resided until moving to Wallace County in 1928. He was united in marriage to Miss Ruth Waldmeier, in January, 1910. To this union eleven children, six boys and five girls were born. One daughter preceded him in death, losing her life in a truck accident in June, 1940.

Mr. Collins had a wide host of friends. Although suffering an incurable heart ailment for over two years, he was cheerful and uncomplaining. He was devoted to his large family and was a kind husband. He was a good neighbor and a friend to all who knew him.

Wilbur Leon Collins was born in Macon County, Missouri, November 26, 1886 and departed this life at his home east of Sharon Springs, October 4, at the age of 54 years, 10 months and 8 days.

At the age of 6 months he moved with his parents to Thomas County, where he resided until he moved to Wallace County in 1928, where he remained the rest of his like.

He was united in marriage to Miss Ruth Waldmeier, in January, 1910. To this union were born 11 children, 6 boys and 5 girls, 10 of which are still living. One daughter, Edith, preceded him in death June 29, 1940.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, his children, Lawrence, James, Chester, Elmer, Bobby, Freddy, Doris and Irene of the home. Mrs. Clyde Lock, of Wallace, and Mrs. Earl Hogan, of Kit Carson, Colo., and seven grandchildren. His aged parents of Brewster, one sister, Mrs. Harry Kear, and a host of relatives and friends.

He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a friend to all who knew him.

OBITUARY - JAMES M. COLLINS

October 26, 1922

James Malory Collins, son of Valinda and Roswell Collins, was born in Giles County, Tennessee November 3, 1835, died in Blair, Oklahoma October 15, 1922.

Mr. Collins moved to Macon County, Missouri with his mother, two brothers and one sister in the Spring of 1852. In 1854 the family then settled on the farm now occupied by Tommie Collins.

On June 20, 1857 he was married to Parmelia Ann Daugherty. To this union was born ten children; they are Mrs. R. B. Snell of Colby, Kansas, William Porter and Mrs. Parsons of Brewster, Kansas, James and Alonza of Luray, Kansas, John Johnston of Orange, California, Mrs. Albert Ross of Oakland, California, Charles N. of La Plata and Thomas Campbell of Kansas City, Missouri.

Mrs. Collins died January 20, 1882. On December 24, 1884 he was then married to Sarah McCully Winn; to this union were born five children, two dying in infancy, Malory died four years ago. Two surviving are Mrs. Ralph Easley of Kirksville and Herbert H. of St. Louis.

He united with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church forty-three ago. He was the oldest Mason in the state of Oklahoma, being a Mason for sixty-five years.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church Monday afternoon at 2:00. A short talk was made at the grave by an old veteran, General Taylor. All the business houses closed and school dismissed so they might pay their respects to this esteemed citizen. He was the last of a large family.
