OBITUARIES
Clare Atteberry of Willow Brook, Calif. was accidentally killed 1 September
1927 while at work for a company where they crushed rock. He was the son
of the late J.B. Atteberry and was born and reared in LaPlata, Mo. and lived
there until six years ago when he located in California. He leaves a wife
and two daughters, Miss Gladys of the home and Mrs. Goldie Henthorn of Fellows,
Calif., two sisters, Mrs. Albert Colman and Mrs. J.H. Colman of Callao and
one brother Frank Atteberry of Warren, Massachusetts, one half sister, Mrs.
Frank Gross of near LaPlata. He was a twin. His twin brother, Claud Atteberry
was accidentally killed in Denver, Colo. eleven years ago.

ALICE LEE BARRY -- Alice Lee Barry, eighty-five, of La Plata, died at her
home Thursday following an illness of a few months. She was the daughter
of Samuel and Mary Moore Gasaway and was born February 4, 1877 in La Plata.
On January 20, 1899 in La Plata, she was married to George Barry and to this
marriage one son was born. Surviving are her son, Carl T. Barry of Shawnee,
Oklahoma; one grandson, Roger W. Barry of Nelight, Nebraska and one sister,
Annie Brown, La Plata. She was preceded in death by her husband, four brothers,
and two sisters. Mrs. Barry was a member of the La Plata Christian Church
and the Willing Workers Sunday School Class. Funeral services were held in
the Christian Church in La Plata Sunday afternoon at 1:30 with Rev. Frank
Stout officiating. Burial was in the La Plata Cemetery under the direction
of Wilson Funeral Home. Bearers were Ray Sees, Dwight Gragg, Hadley Graham,
William Naughton, Virgil Lindberg and Vern Henry. La Plata Home Press, October

Ethel Barry -- Miss Ethel Barry, age 60, of Centralia, died Wednesday morning
in the Moberly Maple Lawn Nursing Home. She had been in failing health for
some time. Funeral services were held in the LaPlata Baptist Church at 2:00
p.m. Friday. Burial was in the LaPlata Cemetery. Miss Barry was born in LaPlata
and educated in the LaPlata schools. She had lived the past twenty-five years
in Centralia. Survivors in LaPlata are a sister and brother, Mrs. John (Zella)

EVERT R. BARRY -- Evert R. Barry, who for years provided dray and delivery
services in La Plata, died at his home here Sunday, August 16, at 8:30 a.m.
Mr. Barry, seventy-six, had been in failing health for about three years.
His death came suddenly from a coronary attack. The son of Francis H. and
Manerva Barry, he was born near Elmer on October 11, 1880. On February 11,
1904 he married Miss Mary W. Streight at Atlanta. Five children were born
to the couple. Surviving relatives include his wife and four children, Clarence
of La Plata, Claude of Cairo, Miss Ethel Barry of Centrailia and Mrs. John
Moncrief of La Plata; and a sister Mrs. Betty Story of Panoia, California.
One daughter, Mrs. Estella Moncrief, died in 1945. Mr. Barry lived in the
La Plata community his entire life with the exception of two years spent
in Arkansas. He ran a dray service back in the horse-drawn days in La Plata,
coupled with a delivery service. He shifted from horse and horse-drawn power
in 1940 and did not quit business until after he suffered a stroke in 1950.
He was a member of the La Plata Baptist Church and the Modern Woodmen Lodge.
Funeral services were at the Baptist Church Tuesday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Claude
Thompson officiating. A vocal duet was by Betty and Gaylia Miller. Pallbearers
were Roy and Herb Moncrief, Albert Wright, Robert Self, Lewis Gluck and Bill

George Barry, Long Resident of City, Dies at Home Here George W. Barry, 78
years of age, died at his home here Monday morning after an illness of several
months. Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the
LaPlata Christian Church, with R. L. Prather, officiating minister. Burial
was in LaPlata Cemetery. The son of Frank and Minerva Barry, George W. Barry
was born in Dallis County, Mo. On 20 March 1899, he was married to Alice
Gasaway. They made their home in LaPlata and continued to live here throughout
their married life. Mr. Barry was employed by the American Express Railway
Company for twenty-six years before his retirement. Surviving relatives are
his widow, his son, Carl of Washington, Kansas; a grandson Roger; a sister
Surilda Story of Pamona, Colo.; and one brother, Everett of LaPlata. His
parents, three brothers and one sister preceded him in death. La Plata Home

James Barry -- A telegram received by Evert Barry told of the death of his
brother, James C. Barry at Wenatchee, Washington, December 8. The funeral
was held Monday, December 11, at 11:00 from the Jones and Jones Chapel. James
C. Barry was born near Cardy, Missouri November 1, 1875. He married Mattie
Mathis and moved to Washington more than fifty years ago. His wife preceded
him in death in 1919. He is survived by a daughter Mrs. Walter J. Gilbery
of Hartline, Washington; two granddaughters; two brothers, George W. and
Evert O. Barry, both of La Plata; a sister, Mrs. Surilda Story of Paonia,
Colorado. The deceased visited friends and relatives here last summer. La

MARY WILSON BARRY -- Mary Wilson Barry, eighty-eight, life-long resident
of the La Plata area, died at 1 a.m. Wednesday in a Kirksville hospital.
She sustained a broken hip three weeks ago. Mrs. Barry was born October 26,
1873, the daughter of the late Benjamin F. and Mary Wilson Stevens Streight,
near Sue City. She was married to Evert O. Barry February 11, 1904. He preceded
her in death in August 1957. She had made her home with her daughter, Mrs.
John Moncrief of La Plata, since that time. She is survived by two sons,
Clarence C. Barry of La Plata and Claudie Barry of Cairo, two daughters,
Mrs. John (Zella) Moncrief of La Plata and Ethel Barry of Centrailia; also
six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren; three half-sisters, Mrs.
Grace Saunders of Delaware, Oklahoma, Mrs. Nina Vaughn of Wooldridge and
Mrs. Nona Camm of Memphis, Tennessee; four half-brothers, Walter Streight
and Wesley Streight of Little Rock, Arkansas, Cleo Streight of Hazen, Oklahoma
and Curtis Streight of Concord, California. Mrs. Barry was a member of the
La Plata Baptist Church where funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m.
Rev. Frank Claiborne will officiate with burial in the La Plata Cemetery.
The body will remain at Christie Funeral Home until time for the services.

Sarah Barry Sarah Jane Deaton, daughter of John P. and Mary R. Deaton, was
born in Adair County, Missouri December 12, 1870 and died at her home in
La Plata, Missouri November 27, 1927, aged fifty-six years, eleven months
and fifteen days. She was married to William Barry February 21, 1894. She
was a member of the Universalist Church at Elmer, Missouri and has always
been faithful and true to her faith. In 1912 she lost the sight of one eye
and five years later became totally blind. A few hours before her death she
regained her sight and was able to see her loved ones and friends. She leaves
to mourn, her husband, William Barry of this city, one sister, Mrs. Jim Meeks
of La Plata and one brother, Perry Deaton of near Moberly, besides a host
of neighbors and friends. The funeral was held at the home Tuesday afternoon
conducted by Rev. Wylie F. Steen, pastor of the Community Presbyterian Church.

WILLIAM A. BARRY -- William A. Barry died July 20 in St. Joseph at the age
of seventy-one years. He was born in Camden, Missouri July 16, 1871, the
son of Francis H. and Minerva Barry. He moved with his parents to Macon County
where he spent practically all the remainder of his life. He had been a resident
of La Plata for several years. In 1894 he was married to Miss Sarah Jane
Deaton who died November 28, 1927. He married Mrs. Nellie Curtis August 13,
1928. Mr. Barry is survived by his wife, three brothers, George of La Plata,
James of Wenatche, Washington and Everett of La Plata. One sister, Mrs. Betty
Story of Paonia, Colorado and several nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and
nephews. One sister preceded him in death about fourteen years ago and one
brother who died January 15, 1942. Funeral services were held August 1 and

ELVIN C. BRAGG -- Funeral services for Elvin C. Bragg, 58, were held Saturday
afternoon at 2:00 in the Baptist Church. Rev. Edward Sanders conducted the
services and burial was in the LaPlata Cemetery. Elvin died unexpectedly
at 7:30 Wednesday evening at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City where he
had been a patient for two weeks. The son of William and Ada (Magers) Bragg,
he was born at South Gifford November 7, 1907. On December 25, 1929, in La
Plata, he was married to Mary Louise Shouse and to this marriage three children
were born. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Ada Rolston of La Plata; his wife;
one daughter, Mrs. Ronald (Phyllis) Belt of Macon; two sons, Larry of Ewing
and Jimmy of the home; three step-sisters, Etta Hazen of Hammond, Indiana,
Ruby Moore of Moorehead, Minnesota and Alice Begole of La Plata; one
step-brother, Manford Ralston of Marshall, Michigan and several grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father. He was a lifelong resident of this
vicinity and was a graduate of La Plata High School. He also attended Kirksville
State Teachers College. He was the manager of the MFA at the time of his
death and been manager two different times for a total of about 14 years.
He also was engaged in farming and had operated a grocery store where the
Fouch Market is now located for a few years. Elvin had been a member of the
La Plata School Board for 12 years, was a member of the City Council for
several terms. He was a member of the Baptist Church and had served as a
deacon of the church for many years. He was also a member of Lodge No. 237,
AF & AM, Chapter No. 59, Order of the Eastern Star, the I.O.O.F., the
Saddle Club, the Community Commerce Club and the Lions Club. He was an active
member of the Northeast Missouri Trail Riders during the early years of the
Club. Bearers were Donald Beach, Ronald Bragg, Gaylard Ward, Wilson Belt,

Will Bragg, 83, well known resident of Adair County, died 25 September 1927.
He spent nearly all his life in Illinois Bend neighborhood, moving to LaPlata
two years ago.

JACK BROWN -- Jack Brown was born June 14, 1880 at Elmer, Missouri and died
December 24, 1943. He was the son of America and Jackson Brown. On January
16, 1906 he was married to Anna K. Gasaway. To this union one child was born,
Ralph, who preceded him in death in 1909 at the age of three years. Mr. Brown
spent most of his boyhood days in and around Elmer, later coming to La Plata
and working for thirteen years for the Prairie Pumping Station. At the time
of his death he was working for the Santa Fe Railroad at Chillicothe, Illinois,
when he was called to help clear the track of a train that had a car that
was derailed. Because of a confusion of signals and lights at the wrecked
train, the motor car Mr. Brown was riding on collided with the wreck. The
accident occurred Thursday evening and he died at 2:45 a.m. Friday at the
Methodist Hospital in Peoria, Illinois. Besides his widow Mr. Brown is survived
by three brothers, Walter of Galesburg, Ben and Cornelius of Henrietta, Oklahoma;
four sisters, Elisa Rhoades of Elmer, Molly Herrin of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma,
Carrie Puckett of Henrietta, Oklahoma and Maggie Sunderland of California;
a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services were held
at the home in La Plata at 2:00 Sunday afternoon, December 26. Nephews were
pallbearers and nieces were flower girls. Interment was made in the La Plata

Mrs. Martha F. Bunch, 69, widow of John M. Bunch, died at her home in Ten
Mile Township 25 Nov 1904. She is a daughter of Rev. Joseph Oliver, deceased.
Funeral services at Mt. Tabor Church and interment by the side of her husband
in the adjoining cemetery.

William Cabeen -- William Cabeen died very suddenly at his home here Tuesday,
April 30, 1918, aged seventy-four years, six months, and one day. He leaves
to mourn his departure a wife, three sons, C.T. Cabeen of this city, Clarence
of Kansas City and George of St. Louis. Funeral services were held at the
Christian Church today at 10:00, conducted by Rev. H.A. Browning. The remains

W.P. Coffey, 76, died 17 April 1928 at Junction City, Kansas at the home
of his son, Jim Coffey. He was well known around Macon.

James Leonard Cress -- James Leonard Cress, 80, Kansas City, MO, died Thursday,
March 18, 1999, at his home. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at
Mt. Washington Cemetery. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Monday at George C. Carson
and Sons Independence Chapel. Mr. Cress was born September 23, 1918, in Excello,
Mo. He grew up in Macon, Mo., and lived in Kansas City all of his adult life.
He served in the Navy during WWII. He was a warehouse supervisor for Kansas
City Terminal Warehouse, U.S. Cold Storage, and later for Commercial
Distribution. He was president for many years of the North Blue Ridge
Neighborhood Association. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Cress,
in 1996. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, James A. and Josephine
Cress, Kansas City; sister, Margaret Long, Macon, Mo.; and numerous nieces
and nephews.

Mary A. Cress -- Mary A. Cress, Independence, MO, passed away Sunday, June
23, 1996, at Independence Regional Health Center. Funeral services will be
2 p.m. Thursday, June 27, at Carson Independence Chapel; burial in Mt. Washington
Cemetery. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, at Carson Independence
Chapel. Mrs. Cress worked for a variety of companies including Russell Stovers;
Kansas City Boyswear; American Plastics; Sunset Plastics; and Prom Cleaners.
Mrs. Cress is survived by her husband of 50 years, Leonard Cress; a son,
James A. Cress; and two sisters, Mrs. Theresa Thompson and Mrs. Kathleen
Taylor. Mary was dedicated to her family, worked hard for a better way of
life, and will be greatly missed.

John Elliott, 40, died 18 May 1926 at the hospital in Kirksville, Mo. He
was born 6 September 1885 in Linn County, Iowa, the son of J.M. Elliott.
He and his family have lived in Macon the past six years where he has been
engaged in carpenter work. He is survived by his wife, and four children,
Richard, Opal, Thelma and Lovern Elliott, his mother, and the following sisters
and brothers. Mrs. Walker Williamson of Eldorado, Ark., Mrs. Chas. Depew
of Atlanta, Mrs. Ret Lindley and Mrs. Elmer Stanfield also of Atlanta; Mrs.
Ernie Starbuck of Starbuck, Colo., James Elliott of Atlanta and George Milton
Elliott of Ethel. Funeral at Christian Church in Atlanta.

John Emdee, 70, who lived west of Atlanta, Mo. died 29 April 1928. He was
a son of John and Sarah Emdee, who came to Macon County from Indiana in 1856.
He was born near the old McCullough Mill on the Chariton, 7 May 1857. Of
a family of seven children he was the last surviving member. He was married
to Miss Cora Hadley 5 November 1890 who survives. Funeral at Hopewell Church
and interment in family lot in the nearby cemetery. He was an uncle of Aura
Roach, Miss Effie Roach and Mrs. James McDonald at Macon.
