Obituary for Sophia Sophronia Kohl (1898-1986)

Early Sunday morning, January 26, 1986 in Barnes Hospital, St. Louis, Mo., Mrs. Sophia Sophronia KOHL quietly passed away in her sleep. She was 87 years, 10 months and 22 days of age. Mrs. KOHL had entered the hospital only days before.

She was born March 4, 1898 in Lincoln County, Mo., the daughter of Weeden and Catherine FERKEL LEFFELER.

On April 21, 1920 she and Frank Henry KOHL were united in marriage. They established their home in Lincoln County, where they engaged in farming.

Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. KOHL.

Preceding Mrs. KOHL in death were her husband, Frank Henry KOHL, who passed away June 26, 1969, one daughter, Lola KOHL, who died in infancy, two brothers, Adam LEFFELER and John LEFFELER, Mrs. KOHL’s twin sister, Naomi LEFFELER and Bertha LEFFELER.

Surviving Mrs. KOHL are the following children: Muriel and her husband, Earl McMURAY of Turlock, Ca., Catherine and her husband, Edward STANEK, of Silex, Julia and her husband, Earl DAY of Ferguson, her twins, Frank KOHL and his wife, Helen of Twain Harte, Cal. and Frances and her husband, Marvin HANDLONG of Troy, Edward KOHL and his wife, Marjorie of Silex, and Lela and her husband, Robert Watts of Lincoln, Ne.; a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Myrtle LEFFELER and Mrs. Virgie LEFFELER, several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

As her children were growing up, Mrs. KOHL was home with them. Later she became an employee of the Fred Mears Heel Factory in Troy, and worked there until her retirement.

In July of 1977 Mrs. KOHL left the farm and moved to Troy. While living on the farm, she was a member of the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church of Millwood. After moving to Troy, she became a member of the Sacred Heart Parish of Troy.

Mrs. KOHL was an active participant at T.A.C.O.A., the Troy Nutrition Center. She loved music and enjoyed playing in the T.A.C.O.A. Band. All through the years with her children, she sang happy songs and played harmonica. She continued playing and singing all through her lifetime. She also was a lover of flowers and always grew many kinds. She was a very happy dispositioned lady, and always had a ready smile. Her life was centered around happiness, much of it which she created.

Her family and friends have only happy memories of this fine lady whose life has meant so much to each of them.

The funeral mass for Mrs. KOHL was held at 10 o’clock Wednesday morning, Jan. 29, 1986 from St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Millwood, Mo., conducted by the Rev. James Flynn, pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Troy. The organist was Mrs. Jerry Miller and the choir was from the Millwood School.

Interment was in the Millwood Cemetery.

Casket bearers were Mrs. KOHL’s grandsons: Steve WATTS, David STANEK, Mike STANEK, Eugene STANEK, Frank STANEK and John KOHL. Honorary casket bearers were Dennis DAY and Paul DIETRICK.

A Christian Wake Service, led by Father Flynn, was held at the Chapel of the Kemper Marsh Funeral Home in Troy on Tuesday evening.
