Boy Drowns Near Troy

A cornoner's jury at Troy, returned the verdict of accidental death due to strangulation in the death of a 17 year old Kansas youth who drowned while swimming in Cuivre River, about 2 miles north of Troy, Sunday afternoon, July 13th (hand written to the side 1952 j.g. ) According to witnesses, the boy, Charles A. BROCK and another youth whose name was not available, entered the water just above the old Highway 61 bridge, swam downstream past the bridge, and headed for the bank there. Upon reaching the shore, the younger boy noticed BROCK's crys for help, and reentered the water in an attempt to save him. His efforts were unsuccessful, however, and the boy's brother-in-law, who was standing on the opposite bank, entered the water but was unable to locate BROCK, who sank from sight about 30 feet from shore. An ambulance and inhalator were summoned and shortly after they arrived, Jimmy Shields, Carter CREECH,and Ben HENKE were sucessful in locating the body in aout 14 feet of water and bringing it to shore, where the inhalator was used unsuccessfully for about an hour. Young BROCK, who would have been 17, Friday, was staying with his sister and her husband in St. Louis, and was working in that city, although his home was origially in Princeton, Kansas.
