Obituary for Amanda Sitton (1839-1918)
No. 133 - Uncited clippings from the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection" of Beth Rengers Talken, 1998.

"No one sees the open door, As they pass beyond recall, Soft as roses blow in June time, One by one our loved ones fall."

Suddenly at the morning meal Wednesday Sept. 4th, 1918, the call came to this good mother to come home.  She was the last member of a large and influential family of Lincoln county, the CALLAWAYS. She was born June 29, 1839, thus making her of the full age of 79 years, 2 months and 6 days.

She was married to L.B. SITTON, Aug. 31, 1871. Two children were born to this union, Martha J., who died June 10th, 1892, and California, who survives her. There are two grandsons, fine fellows who will miss grandmother.  She had three brothers, three sisters and three half-sisters, all of whom have passed away, save two half-sisters. She united with the Christian church in her early life and faithfully kept her vows until the end.

The funeral service was held in the home and was attended by a large crowd of her neighbors and friends.  The service was conducted by her pastor. The burial was in the SITTON graveyard nearby. A good, kind and noble woman has passed from among us.

"Kind hearts are more than coronets, And simple faith than Norman blood."

Her many beautiful virtues will long live in our memories. If we are allowed to judge, she was truly a splendid Christian. May she rest in peace.

Note regarding clippings from the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection":  Neva Murphy Hubbard (1886-1971) lived all of her life in Lincoln County, MO.  She collected a large file of clippings of Lincoln County residents. The majority of the clippings were without citation. Beth Rengers Talken, beneficiary of the collection, has transcribed them for inclusion in our Lincoln County Heritage Records.
